Miss Tandy has been named by Hal Wallis to co-star with Joan Forv taine and Joseph Cotten in his Paramount drama, "September. Miss Tandy was last seen with Charles Boyer in "A Woman's Another "Streetcar" player, James O'Xeill, who is still in the Broadway production, will make his screen debut in Universale "Confidential Squad," which is being filmed in its entirety in New ork.

Gwendolen Raverat, and the resultant ballet was, in turn, responsible for the formation of the Sadler' Wells Ballet For this alone, we must be grateful. In his excellent book, "The Sadler's Wells Ballet," Cyril W. Beaumont tells us that when its authors put the idea of "Job" before Sergei Diaghileff in 1928, he turned it down on the grounds that It was "old-fashioned." If Diaghileff thought it outmoded 20 years ago, you can imagine how wa felt last night. The whole thing looked to us like a well-staged Sunday School pageant, and was just about as exciting.

Again, we were treated to some lovely groupings, but there was little or no dancing not even by Robert Helpmann, who took the part of Satan. Only Vaughan Williams' music had any merit. and even that is not the best example of his work. To put it Diuntly, "Job" was a deadly bore. The evening's final ballet was a repetition of "Symphonic Variations," which we reviewed on an earlier occasion.

Robert Irving conducted all three works with authority. We're going to miss our Ene- lish visitors when they leave town after Sunday night's per-formance. We surely hope they come back next season, but when they do, they can leave these three ballets at home. McKnight Kauffer. The work amounts to a game of chess between love and death, with the victory going to the latter.

Jhose who piay cness may get more out of the ballet than we did, but we found the choreography at tractive mainly for the inter esting and often' striking patterns it produced. The ending, however, with the lengthy tor turing ot tne defeated Red King, necame ratner tedious. Bliss music was adequate, though somewhat heterogeneous. Prin cipal dancing honors go to love ly, long-limbed Beryl Grey, who was alternately imperious and treacherously seductive as the victorious Black Queen, and Alexis Rassine as the challeng ing Red Knight. Their warlike pas de deux, danced with lances was the high point of the en tire evening.

The second offering, also by Miss de Valois, was a "Job," described as "A Masque for a i with music by Vaughan Williams and scenery and costumes by John Piper, after William Blake's illustra tions for "The Book of Job." Blake's drawings, as a matter of fact, were responsible for the whole work, for which the book is by Geoffrey Keynes and MET.
