As I understand it, your proposition is to open a subscription for the purchase of these animals, and, if successful, to present them to the City of New York to be added to its collection in Prospect Park. I understand, also, that the park officials have signified their willingness to accept this gift and be responsible for it, and that a portion of the amount necessary has already been subscribed.

I beg to take this occasion to express my general interest in your proposition, together with the belief that it will be a distinct advantage to that portion of our community that visits public parks and especially to young people who are interested or who may become interested in the study of wild animals. It seems to me that a large number of our Brooklyn Scouts might be interested in your plan, and I trust that many of our troops may see their way clear in the matter of collecting and forwarding subscriptions to this end. Your idea of issuing a certificate of club membership will doubtless appeal to many of the Scouts, and 1 trust that a large number of them will become eligible for membership in this club, and I know they will have pride in holding this certificate that you will present. Yours cordially, (Signed) WILLIS B. H0LC0MBE, Commissioner.

A pretty good record that, and more than a good record, (or it is the record not only for Brooklyn, but for the -whole country. And that was not the only thing to grow enthusiastic over at the meeting of the Court of Honor held last Tuesday night at Pratt Casino.

Fifteen nys qualified with twenty-one or more merit badges for the Eagle, scout badge, the highest award in scouting; twenty-one fellows earned the rank of first-class scout and six more took life and star badges. Of these honors Troop 40, under Scoutmaster Denham, carried off a large share of tho glory with eight EagU badges, and ten of these coveted decorations went to Flatbush. It was a Flatbush boy, too, Douglass Murphy, who was presented with an honor badge for life saving, the story of whose rescuo of a child from drowning at Good Ground has already been told in Tho Junior Eagle. Dan Beard Fed Sickle Bears to Civil War Wounded. Tb'U was the official business of the evening.

But it is safe to say that the part most enjoyed was the alk by National Field Commissioner Dan Beard, who told among other things of his boyhood recollections of the Civil War. Mr. Beard spoke more than once, addressing the new first-class scouts, the Baffle Scouts and then the meeting in general, but we aro going to bring all his remarks togethor. Ho first pointed out how the scout work of today differed from the training he and tho boys of his day received, for they had to be driven by the rod and everything the scout learns he does of his own free will. He said that the Boy Scout movement was truly American, as the Boone Scouts preceded Baden-Powell by fifty years, and the latter was really wearing the hat of tho American cowboy.

He then told how as a boy he had gone to see a battle of the Civil War and had run right past tho sentries, who called "Halt!" out who would not fire at a mere lad. All went well until a surgeon major discovered him where he was hidden In a trench and set him to work caring for the wounded, and In particular fanning tho files off the leg of a man who had been stabbed with a bayonet. Young Beard left his task long enough to gather some sickle pears for all the inmates of the hospital. The surgeon was angry when ho discovered by the cores tht the wounded had eaten something that was not on their diet list, but none of the soldiers would tell who had given them the pears. A very amusing situation arose when Dan Beard allowed each of the Eagle Scouts to smell the beaver scent, which Indians use to rub on traps to remove the taint of human hands, so that animals will not be afraid to approach the snares.

He also, without telling them what it was, gave them each a taste of the jerked meat of Rocky Mountain sheep. Some of the boys were a lit-tlo doubtful about eating it, but were reassured when they learned what it was. Mr. Wot Warns nf Some Difficult Conditions. Chief Scout Executive 6i.

West also gave a very Interesting talk upon the real meaning of merit badges. He said that he had been astounded at the number to be presented, and bad wondered if ail the requirements had been fulfilled. An investigation disclosed that they had been, but lie warned tlic boys that in the future merit badges would O'Connor, Troop 48; Otto Rattinger, Troop 19; John Stoffler. The only candidates called upon for formal examinations, though somo were asked random questions when they came up for their badges, were those scouts who applied for merit badges in art, areni-tecture and pathfinding. Of these all except one came through the test with flying colors. Troop 40, not satisfied with winning merit badges, added to its glory, by applying an orchestra for the evening, which furnished a number of selections that were thoroughly enjoyed.
