Crt out thondvretameni endicodfor It, and urolflm gdMiUOH.WllMWivr.' u. 1, A Mysicrions Aflhir A Deod Man' Found in a Traveling Trunkv Somo littlo excitement occurred on Saturday night, at the Middlo district station house, upon the delivery there of a largo traveling trunk, containing the dead hody of a white man, It was brought to tho station by some members of the police, accompanied by Mr. John Stark, a hackman, in whose houso the trunk had been opened.

Coroner Brewer was immediately notified, and summoned a jury of inquest, who met yesterday morning at ton o'clock, at tho station. Tho facts brought out at this investigation are substantially as follows; On Friday morning, upon tho arrival of tho steamer from Norfolk, a woman dressod in black, heavily veiled, about forty yoars of age, engaged Mr. Stark, haokman, to convey herself and baggage consisting only of one largo trunk to a boarding house, she remarking, that as she intended to proceed finher North, it would not ho necossra to go to a hotel, aud she would prcler a private houso. Mr. then drove her to tho boarding house of Mr.

J. S. Palmatory, No. 9 Watson street, where ho was acquainted, and where the woman was accommodated with a room on the second floor. Tht trunk was also carriod ts tho apartment.

Mr. Palmatory states that the woman remained in tho room all day. At dinner time was called, but oxouse'd herself froim dirUrig, saying that she was ill and would only take a a cup of coffee. This was sent to her by a sorvaut, who nrjon entering the room, noticed the woman lying upon the bed, with her head so muflled up that her features could not be distinguished. The stranger remained at Mr.

P.s house until about eight o'clock, imd then calling one of the houaohold, desired 0 hack, for the purposo as sho said, of proceeding to the dopot of tho Northern Central railway, where she was to tako the cars for Chicago. Mr. Stark was sent for, being in the neighborhood, and again hud the woman and her trunk in his enre. He drove to tho depot where tho female alighted, and asked tho amount of his faro, at tho samo time handing him five dollars, telling him to have it changed, and also saying that sho bad one or two purchases to make on tho street, and (hat Bho would rolurn in a few minutes. Mr.

Stark had the trunk taken off the hack and carried insido the depot. Tho woman disappeared and has not been seen since. Stark remained at the dopot until nearly li o'clock, and the owner not appearing, he plaeod tho trunk again upon his hack aud drove to his houso, No. G3 Grauby street, whero he deposited it. On Saturday Stark wont to Philadelphia, and before his roturu at night, neighbor visited his house on business.

While thorc, Mrs. Stark remarked to Burns tliat there was something mysterious about the trunk, that it was very heavy, and that an unpleasant ordov escaped from it, and desired him to opon it. jiurns tried unsuccessfully several keys. He then took a chisol and pried off the hasp of the lock; raising tho lid of tho trunk, to their amazement and horror, the dead body, lying fuco downward, the legs being doubled up under tho stomach, The police were at once made acquainted with the circumstance, aud tho body taken to the dead house. The dead man was apparently between 35 and 40 years of ago, iibout fivo feet fivo inches light brown, straight hair, sandy moustache, aud beard under tbo chin no side whiskers.

He had on bluo woolen socks, with extra solos of some red and green material sowed to thoin black cassimori) pants; drawers of coarso stuff, tied at the ankles, undershirt, muslin shirt, aud a grey army shirt over alt. Iu tho trunk there were a pair oi top boots; a woman's dross of half mourning calico; a towel; a pair of thin drawers; a bluo and a black silk cravat, and a soldier's canteen filled with wator. Thero was neithor cap or coat, tho body bareheaded aud coatless. In Ihe pocket of the deceased thero were found a small penknife, likewise a pencil aud comb. There were 110 marks on the body or the clothing or the things in the trunlr.

by which any clue could bo had to tho identity of the man. There was a diversity of opinion among the jury as to tho cause of death. Soma thought that tlio man had been placed in tho trunk when alive and had smothered to death; while others believed that the body had boon placed in after death. In tho sides of tho trunk there were two or three small holes, 0.1 if made with a gimlet; ono hole appeared lo havo been bored from tho with tho blade of a knife, leading some to suppose that (ho mon in his agony was endeavoring to procure air. His knife, however, was found iu the pocket closed up' On the top of tho trunk a card bud been tacked by tho woman while at ths boarding house', witli the following inscription: "Jlrs.

Drown, Chicago." Detective Cassol yesterday ascertaine 1 that tho woman procured a pass at Norfolk to go and return itom Uultimore, under tho ni.itia of tilim Linder. This officer yesterday proceeded to Norfolk for the purpose, if possible, of procuring tho identification of the dcci ased, and other information which may throw some light upon this mysterious aliitir. Tho jury rendered a verdict that death ensued from causes unknown, 'there were io marks of violeuco upon the body at all. The skin of the forehead and right eye brow wnsrtbrazed but this was caused by (lie jolting and moving of the trunk. writing the foregoing, it has been ascertained that about nine o'clock last night a woman appeared at Uip Western police station r.ud stated to Chonowitli that 3ke was tho woman who had charge ol the trunk above mentioned She whs sent to tbe Miirslud of Police, ami in the presence of Commissioner, lfiudes, tho marshal and deputy marshal, stated that her name was Mary Louise Linder, that she was thirty soven years of; age, a woman of ill re puto, and had lived Norfolk for a number of years.

The name of the deceased was Samuel Freeborn, a membor 01 company 20th New York cavalry; that he enlisted about three months ago, and deserted about a month afterwards, wince which timo ho had lived with her, being concealed in hor house by day, and going out by night. The travelling in tho trunk was his own project, aud ho Blepfc in it all night on Wednesday night iu order to tost the practicability of the ndvonlure. About three o'clock on Thursday afternoon ho got into tlio trunk, having proviouBly mado a small hole in it, and between eloran and twelve o'clock the srano night, while on board the boat, sho rapped, upon tlie. trunk and he answered, "Go I'm all right." As soon as the trunk was brought to her room, upon her arrival hore on Friday morning, she opened it and found that he was dead. Sho subsequently put upon it a card, and marked it, Mrs.

Brown, Chiero, und had it removed to Calvert station, though sho did not intend leaving Baltimore. She states that sho then commenced walking the streots, and did so until seven o'clock last night, when she determined to give hersalf up, its she bad boon greatly worried in mind about it. Sho was confined 111 the Middle station housy for tho night, and this morning will bo turned over to the military authorities. Cl.nctle Monday.
