to answer a charge of abandonment and atlultery, prefered by a woman calling herself his wife and who goes by the name of Margaret Rollison. The cause had been adjourned from last week. Messrs. Jack and Cole appeared on the part of the people. Mrs.

Rollison was called to the stand for the purpose of testifying against her husband, or rather us one of the witnesses for the people, to which the counsel for the defense objected, on the ground that a wife's testimony was inadmissible according to the rules of evidence, and practice. The opposing counsel, however, insisted on their right to examine the wit ness. A long discussion here took place, in which Mr. Waring started a new point involving the jurisdiction of the police justice in the premises. In cor once of this the case was again adjourned rov, when we presume the parties will muster all their forces, each confident of victorv, and their opinions advanced as governing the rule of evidence in this case.

Ann Magee of Warren st. South Brooklyn. She was, on Monday nitrht last about ten o'clock, seized with cramps in the limbs immediately after her return home from visiting a sick friend, to whom she had been very attentive for some days past. Dr. Cochrane and another physician whose name we could not learn, proniply attended, and exercised their best skill and judgement.

But alas! in vain. The com plaint baffled their joint endeavors. The poor lady breathed her last yesterday afternoon, after lay ing some ten hours in great agony. She bore an estimable character as a wife, and leaves behind her two children and a sorrowing husband to de plore her loss. We learn that no less than nine persons have died out of a house at the corner of Bond and Douglass streets, of the prevaling epidemic, since its first appearance in this city.

Fire extraordinary. Last evening about half past seven o'clock, an omnibus, having in it its full complement of passengers, on their way to the Fulton ferry, was discovered to be on fire. A sudden jolt had broken the spirit gas lamp, the contents of which suddenly ignited and the end of the omnibus at which it is placed began to blaze away. The passengers got out in double quick time. By the aid of a few buckets of water obtained from Holt's hotel, the fire was soon extinguished.

Luckily no one was injured. A recur r.ence of such an accident may very easily be obvi. ated. The Advertiser, in noticing the death of Mr. Albert S.

Richmond, a young tradesman of this city, says He enjoyed in an eminent degree the confidence and esteem of all who were acquainted with him. About nine o'clock on Saturday night, he complained of feeling unwell, and went to his esidence, shortly after which his father sent Dn Cook, the family physician, to prescribe for him. In a few hours he expired amid the tears and lamentations of those who had seen him but a brief period before in the apparent enjoyment of unim pared health. Afflicting. Warren Richmond, grocer, in Fulton street, near St.

She was a young lady in rather delicate health. Star of Tuesday. MyBDER. Officer Hegeman arrested on Monday night about 12 o'clock, a colored man named Phi lo Pater Buck, who stands charged with the murder of one John Rider, also colored in the town of Flatlands.

It appears that Rider and Buck were at the store of one Isaac Skidmore in Flatbush, on Sunday last and some words ensuing, Rider was challenged by Buck to go out and fight him which refused to do and shortly after left to go home. Buck swore he; would have his life, and followed hhrrto his residenpe. When he arrived Rider was eating his supper, and he again asked him to come out as he wanted to speak to him. Ryder refused and said he didn't want any thing to do with him, Upon asked again however he went out, when Buck instantly knocked him down and kicked him. Rider then drew his knife in self defence, and said if he did not clear out he would knife him.

Buck then started and ran a short distance, whereupon Ryder turned and went hack to the house, when the murderer rushed upon him and struck him a severe blow with a club, about 5 feet in length, and 2 inches in diameter, felling him to the floor. Upon examination it was ascertained that his skull was broken, and the injuries he had received were mortal. Coroner Vanderveer held an inquest on the body and the jury rendered a verdict that the said John Rider came to his death by a blow on the head from a club in the hands of Philo Peter Buck. The Coroner immediately ordered his arrest, which was effected by officer Hegeman on Monday night between the hours of 11 and 12 o' plock, and he was committed for examination. Notice to the Public.

During the prevalence of the Cholera in this city, considering the suddenness of its attack, and the importance of immediate application of remedies the undersigned recommends in all cases where the patient is to be sent to the Cholera Hospital, that the same be done at once, without any delay for a permit, or other wise. The physician of the hospital will be in attendance to receive all such patients. '''Brooklyn, July 20, 1849. jy20tf EDWARD COPLAND. Police Cocbt.
