The sermon aside from the absurdity of its main positions was one of great inter est and ability. The evils of war and slavery were well drawn, and appeared odious enough. The thrusts at the late adminUtraoiu, and especially at Mr. Polk, were done with a hearty good will and there appeared to be no reasonable doubt that the i Rev. gentleman believed what he was uttering.

Unitarian Church. The Rev. F. A. Farley preached a sermon from texts selected from the Books of Joel and Isaiah, and which pointed out clearly in what spiritual fasting consists.

By fast ing in the mere matter of fact sense of the word, we may deceive each other, but not our Father which is in secret." The Rev. gentleman took the view that the pestilential scourge which has, for months past, and is still sweeping from the face of the earth multitudes of our fellow humans, has been sent to reprove us for our manifold national sins and wickedness, in enumerating which, the late "unholy war our want of attention to the be hosts of our Father, our inordinate cupidity, and intemperance as a nation, stood prominently for ward. By earnest and sincere humiliation on our parts. His just anger might be propitiated. The Rev.

gentleman complimented Father Mathew, I whose benevolent and philantropie spirit had effect ed so much good for the human family, and who still went about doing good. He said, this great modern Apostle had done much, but that the noble women of our land had, and he trusted they would still contiuue to rival the good man in his humane endeavors by frowning down the sin of drunkenness altogether, and thus removing the foul blot from our national escutcheon. Calvary Church. The pulpit of this church was filled yesterday morning by the Rev. John Cross, formerly of New Jersey, now a resident of this city.

The text was taken from the book of Ezra, 8th chap. 21st, 22d, and 23d versesT The discourse was a good one indeed, we have seldom listened to one more appropriate and well timed and we feel convinced that no one could have listened to it without profit. Mr. C. we learn, intends opening a select school in this city, in the early part of the fall.

"We wish him success in the undertaking feeling satisfied that few, if any, are better qualified for the task. We will, in this connection, mention that Calvary Church is established upon the free fin sisle)n Any one may with freedom enter this edifice and occupy such slip as he may happen to find unoccupied by other attendants. All he is asked to do is to subscribe, according to his means, towards defraying the expenses of the church. In this building those who have the most of this world's goods are not guaranteed the most eligible seats. The devout and worthy, but poor Christian has advan tages and privileges equal with his (worldly speaking) more favored neighbors.

We would like to see Calvary church more liberally supported by our good citizens than it is. Open the doors of more churches to the poor, and then Brooklyn would stand on a prouder eminence than any city we know of and be more justly entitled to the appellation, city of churches." T. A Row. An occurrence of this nature took place yesterday in South Brooklyn, at the corner of Baltic and Hoyt streets, between a number of Irishmen, who, taking advantage of the national holiday, indulged themselves in getting drunk, and breaking each other's heads. Clubs, knives and axes were used indiscriminately, and some ugly blows were given and received, and several of the combatants severely hurt.

Officer Coiman arrested one of the beligerents, whose name is Patrick B. Corbit, who, upon being taken before Justice King, was commit ted for examination. Warrants are out for the arrest of other parties to the transaction. Carnea' Fashionable Hair Cutting Saloon, "J0. 01 Fulton street, three doors above the Atlantic Bank.

jy38 ty JOEL SMITH, City Inspector. AGliE BUILDING, 30 Fulton street, Brooklvn umiy ana wceKiy newspaper Establishment. We hear that a son of Mr. Olcott, of Columbia st. (druggist, of N.

died yesterday of cholera. He "Wa3 about 12 years old, and had been eating green apples. His two brothers, who had also taken of the raw fruit, were taken unwell but recovered. We understand that our reporter was in error in stating that George Leech and John Arnnetman were arrested on Wednesday by officer Clayton on a charge of stealing a watch. The case of Edward Brittingham will be heard before Judge Greenwood on Wednesday at half past nine o'clock, and not on Tuesday as stated in oar paper on Thursday last.

We understand that the boats, stages omnibusscs ifcc, which went on excursions yesterday were heavily loaded and that great numbers of our citizens sought the fresh and pure air of the country. The churches were very well attended and a num ber of very able discourses were delivered. The shops and stores botli in this city and and in New York were generally closed and, in many respects, the day was much like the Sabbath Max Ovkrboard. As one of the South ferry boats was coming into the slip, a man, who was about half seas over, standing on the bridge, attempted to jump on board. At the same time a gentleman on board the boat was jumping on shore and both meeting half way, a collision ensued which sent one of the parties back gon the boat, and the other into the water; in less time however, than we can relate the circumstances.

The poor fellow was quickly rescued from his perilous position taken from the water a sober mau, and, after being wrunff out, sent to New York, his place of residence. Ths water cure appeared to be most effectual in this instance at least. By permission of divine providence the KevJ Geo. W. Bethune, D.

D. will preach in the Central' Reformed Dutch church, Henry st to morrow. Services at the usual hours. W. The generous and noble hearted proprietorsof the East Brooklyn line of stages, Messrs, Husted fe Kendall, we are informed have put into the hands of his honor Mayor Copland, this morning, 880 being the proceeds of their receipts yester day (3d inst.) to be distributed, in his discretion, to relieve the wants of the poor.

"We further understand that his honor has divided the same, and placed 40 each in the hands of the ex mayors Hall and Stryker, to meet the wishes of the donors. Thk Courts. The proceedings in the respective courts are uncommonly dry and uninteresting Justice King sent one or two drunkards to jail for a period of 5 days each. Justice Winslow yesterday examined an Irish woman on a charge of throwing dirty water upon her neighbors and committed ty jail for the period of 5 days. Suicide by Hangix Coroner Ball held an inquest yesterday ou the body of a German named Joseph Oldenorf, who was found suspended from a tree by means of a handkerchief, in front of Scher merhorn's at Gowanus.

The deceased was formerly an orderly sergeant in the 11th regiment of infantry from which he deserted a short time since and came to this county. Beieg unable to obtain employment, however, he became despondent and melancholy, and finally made way with himself in the manner above stated. He left a letter written to a friend which read as follows My Dear Friend. I am much obliged to you for the last six cents you lent me. And tell my wife what has become of me.

I hope you are well. Good Bye. Joseph Oldenorf. The jury rendered a verdict that the deceased committed suicide by hanging." Brooklyn Institute. July 26, 1840.
