Coming from the peoplo, hewaa pro eminently their representative, thciradvocatc, their friend, and his history lurnishea a notable example of what American institutions may produce, which will live for ever in the history of the nation. As Washington waa the father of his country, Abraham Lincoln must bo considered its martyr. Itesolved That the entire peoplo must regard the assassination oi the President as a cold blooded and heartless murder, for which no punishment can bo too great, nd that tUoy only hopo no considerable number of American citizens havo been involved in tho commission of this moBt gigantic crime, Mr. Jacobs paid a high tribute to tho late PreBidout as a martyr of tho Union, ond eulogized his honost earnestness duty, his labor to secure an early peace aud restored nationality.

The speaker felt that it hid been the duty of every man to rally around Mr. Lincoln in thoso efforts which became so apparent in hifl last moments. To lOEfl him now must solten the sternest ol hcarls, and bring bitter tears to eyes which nover wept before. God preserve ond protect us in tho hour of our humiliation. It is full of danger to a Republic, which, for years Dy civil Btrife, has lost tho protecting arm of its chieftain. Let us give to the incoming administration, wisdom, strength of purpose, anil a deep sense of justice, tbat the glorious labors oi our armies may not havo been in vain. Short but eloquent speeches were then moao by llr.

HE IS EXPECTED TO BSC OVER, Aircst oi" the Pei'petratGr of the HoiTisjlc Deed. MIKE HENRY'S STATEMENT, A moat horrible attempt at murder which will tuoBt probably result fatally was mado about half past 11 o'clock Sunday night, in tho oyster saloon, No.

1 York atrect, kept by A. II. Jacobs, the virtiin being Michael Henry, who keeps a liquor aaloon at No. OS Fulton street; a'most immediate Iy ovor tho saloon where his assassination was attempted Jroni oil tho factB which could bo gathered by our re porter in relation to the affair, it appears that about half, past ono o'clock this morning, Henry went into tho oys. ter saloon in question and ordered an oyster atow.

Ho was sitting quietly waiting for it when a man named John Downey, who lives witli his family over tho store occupied by Henry, crnna into tbo saloon and got into convonauon with three men who were thero at tho and finally pot into a dispute wi'li one of them, who rose to strike him, when Henry interfered and told the man not to strike Downey as ho was not worth it On this Downey got into some words with Henry. At this time Mr. Jacobs, thopropiietor ol the Baloon, was in tho cooking apirtment, aud heard Henry say to Downey, "Go away from me, now; I don't want to have anything to do with you." Fciriuir a disturbance ho came out and put Downey out of tho store, but in about fivo minutes after tbo tetter cvrue back, having something concealed behind hU back. Going towarls Henry, Jacobs sa.v Dowuoy pull a razor from behind hiB back, and immediately called to Uenry to bo on his guard, but before the latter could cet up from his seat, Downey had sprung on him and inflicted a terrible gash in his neck and throat, severing three rirtcric3. An alarm was instantly given, and th assassin was arreslcd by officer Reagan, or tho ild picci.net, and tho wounded man was conveyed to Iho Hospital.

Further Facts and Particulars Statement ot Mike Ilenry. Mr. Henry is at the City Hospital, undor treatment, and this morning was very much easier. The wound is not so dangerous as was first supposed, but bad tho razor penetrated a little further, tho jugular Tein would havo been severed. He appears to bo in pretty good spirits, and only expresses sorrow at the publicity which tbo affair necessarily must obtain.

Ho says that on Saturday night, between 11 and VI o'clock, feeling a bttic hungry, ho went into the oyster saloon on York near Fulton streets, kept by A. II. Jacobs, and sat down to a table, ordering an oystar stow Downey among others was at tho bar, and was somewhat intoxicated. As Henry sat down, ho says, Downey came up to him nnfT commenced somo abuse. He told Downey to ko awnv rL'' De not want to have anything to say to him.

'io this controversy, Mr. Ames came forward Bndid to hw I TiwHna" in the evening. Henry says Downey parly tho bar! and Bom7 high words en'iQg them struck Downey Henry then cried on; "Oh I don't strike ho mani he is'nt worth it; he hasn't tf enough to strike back." Jacobs, the proprietor, then ulttrtered and put Downey ought of tho honse. Henry says u0 1 gave himself no concern, ond was lcanimr his bead upon his hand, when tho door opened and Downey entered again. He Eays ho heard the barkeeper cry oat "look oat, uow almost instantly he felt a sharp, quick btnrsation on the neck.

Henry then says be put his hand up to bis ueek and bis band entered tho wound, and the blood waBilowingfreely. Downey then hcaays, made another thrust at him, wbeu the crowd iulorferod; Jlr. Ames receiving a severe cut on tho hand iu so doing. Henrv Bays ho was taken to the Station Houso whero his wounds were dreBsed by Doctors Cochran ond Mc Farland, and lrom thence to the City Hospital, whero ho now is. Mr.

He is a hard drinker, und when uoder liquor, 1b lull ct fight, and very uglly.

It appears that about a year or more ago, Downoy went into Alike Henry's place, in Kulton street, aud unset a lot of pennies which Henry was counting and placinn in bundles. Then seizing hold of a customer be said to him, "you sou ofab youmustd ink with me." Tbomsn refused, when Downey b. eamo violent and abusive. Henry sent outside, and said to Downey, "You may ahUBO me as mu 'h as you llko, bu jou must not disturb my customers." Ho thou put him out of tho houso. On several occasions thereafter ho greeted him from the house, and every time Downey got a little liquor ID him, bo would breathe all sorts of throats ugainst Henry.

Downey is a man nearly aix feet high, a powerfully built fellow, and has lothcrahard look. Heaoeins to manifest no particular feeling in regard to tho event, and takes the matter as coolly as if he had but killed some pctly insect.
