Our Candidates. Speaking of our Slate Ticket, the Star says The candidates of the Syracuse Convention are very popular men, and it is expedient that thev should be met by the best and most honorable men of the party, in order to bring out tho undoubted Whig majority of the Empire State." Now, neighbor, we make this prediction in advance of the mail, (and we wish it plaeed upon record to be cast in our teeth if we prophecy falsely) that every man nominated by the Syracuse Convention will be elected, that the next Legisla tare will be Democratic, and that New York Whiggery will be no whar" at the November election. Trot out your best nags, groom them with your best skill, jockey to the top of your bent, all will be labor lost. That undoubted Whig majority" can't be dug up in this State. States Island.

Such an influx of visitors as went to thi3 glorious placn on Sunday, has had no parailel during the present season. Every boat was crowded. The air was invigorating, but uot cold, and the effect of it was visible in almost every countenance. Mind and body seemed to be suddenly imbued with an extra portion of elasticity, aud pleasure beamed on every countenance. As soon as landed, the various parties wended their ways as inrl tnation led thoin enmo and some for the hills, and some for those pretty rural spots so naturally calculated for a private family pic nic.

It is really surprising that so few of our modern tourists have mentioned this Area, dia in the terms of admiration so justly its due. With die exception of Colonel Hamilton, who visited this country about twenty years siuce, none have mentioned it. alone spoke of it in terms commensurate with its beauties. He says there are many portions of it that bear a near resem 'stance to the famous Abruzzi mountain scenery of Italy." It is a delightful spot, and we recommend those to visit it who have not yet done so. By the way, we have not heard from Striped Bass" in a length of time Let him cast the scales from bis eyes, put a Jin is to bis piscatorial devotions, and take up his quill again for the edification of our readers.

Open to Conviction." The following descrip tion of character, is from Dickens' Household Words." It hits off to the life, a class of obstmate, self willed persons, who, while making loud professions of candor and fairness, maintain all the while a mulish stubbornness of opinion, upon which arguments are spent as idly as grape shot upon Gibraltar Mr. John Diggs is a man who always carries his will before him, like a crown on a cushion, while bis reason follows like a page, holding up tho skirts of his great coat. Honest hearted, and not without generosity, lie is much esteemed in spite of his many perversities. He possesses a shrewd observation, and a good understanding, when once you get at it but his energies and animal spirits co mnonly carry him out beyond its bounds, so that to tring him back to his rational judgment, is a work of no small difficulty. He is open to conviction, as he always says, but he is a tip top specimen of the class who commonly use that expression his open door is guarded by all the bludgeons of obstinacy, and behind which sits a pig headed will, with its eyes half shut." Novel Damages.

A judgment was lately given against the captain of a militia company, at Buffalo, in a Justice's Court, for damages done to a buggy wagon, by the running away of a span of horses, which became frightened by the noise of martial music, and the appearance of the company as it marched through the streets. An appeal was made to the County Court l.y the defendant, and the judgment was there affirmed. Let our milingtary" officers take warning, and silence the drums when the quadrupeds refuse to face the music." Slaves Among tue Moiimon. A California correspondent of the Boston Traveller says "It may not be generally known that quite a large number of slaves are now to be found among the Mormons of Salt Lake. They were introduced into that community by Southerners, who have connected themselves with those people from time Minnesota Election Sibley, Dem.

The recent government appointment of his Excellency has given great satisfaction and, altogether, Lord Clarendon appears to have become rather popular in Ireland. The repeal agitation has been again revived by O'Connell, but the attempt proves al. most an abortion. The Irish Tenement League for the enforcement of tenant rights, is beginning to attract considerable attention in both England and Ireland and all parties are fully impressed with the necessity of placing the law of landlord and tenant on a more. equitable footing thai it has been.

On Wednesday, the butcher, Haynau, received a slight indication of the regard which the English people entertained for him. He arrived at London on Monday, and on Wednesday, having previously received a lettei of introduction from Baron Itoths child, in which the Baron styles Haynau as his particular friend, he went to visit the brewery of Messrs. Barclay, Perkin3 accompanied by his aid de camp and his interpreter. According to the regular practice of visitors, they were requested to sign their names in a bouk in ihc office, after which they crossed the yard with one of the clerks. On inspecting the visitors' book, the clerk 1 4U.

.1 than Marshal Haynuu, the lite commander in chief of the Austrian forces during the attack upon the unfortunate Hungarians It became known all over the brewery in les than two minutes, and before the General aud his companions had crossed the yard, nearly all the laborers and draymen ran out with brooms and din, shouting out Down with the Austrian Butcher and other epithets of an alarming nature to the Marshal. The Marshal finding how matters stood, aud that he was likely to get a warm reception from the sturdy brewers, thought prudence the better part of valor, aud began to beat a retreat but this was not so easily done. The attack was commenced by dropping a truss of straw upon his head, after which, grain and missiles of every kind were freely bestowed upon him. The men next struck his hat over his eyes, and hustled him from all directions his clothes were torn off his back. The Marshal's companions were treated with equal violence.

The party finally succeeded in reaching the entrance gate, but no sooner had they made their exit, than a crowd of coal heavers, who waited upon jhis Highness, and seized him. He was pelted, struck with every available missile, and even dragged along by his moustache, which afforded ample facilities from its excessive length, still battling with his assailants: He ran in a frantic manner along the bank side until he came to the George Public House, where he ran up stairs and concealed himself in a small closet. The furious mob rushed in after him, threatening to do" for the Austrian Butcher," but fortunately for him they did not succeed in discovering his retreat. Ultimately the police came to his rescue, and he was removed in a police barge to the other end Of the city. This assault has been the subject of comment in nearly all the Loudon and provincial papers, and whilst the minority agree in condemning the act, still they frankly admit that the presence of so disreputable a character in England was a provocation, great enough to excuse even a greater outrage.

The effects which the death of the ex King of the French will have on European politics, has been the theme of much discussion in English papers, and it is generally thought, that the event will have the effect of arousing the latent ambition of the Duke de Joinville. The dispute now pending in tho Bourbon family will, it is thought, be healed, and an effort made to place him a I the head of the French Republic. The proceedings of Congress, at Washington, have also attracted con siderable attention, and the engrossment by the Senate of the Fugitive Slave Bill, has been strongly condemned. Nothing of importance from the rest of Europe "Young Africa" continues to discharge his pop gun into the Democratic camp. Our colored friend has no condemnation for Daniel Webster's glaring treason to Free Soil, and Fillmore's signature to the Fugitive Slave bill disturbs not the equanimity of the stoical Lokg hkel ah.
