Brooklyn Democratic Republican Nominations, FOR SENATOR, EDWARD SANFORD. FOR MEMBERSOF ASSEMBLY, GAMALIEL KIN.G, OF JOHN A. VOORHIES, OF FLVTLANDS. Democratic Republican Gen, Committee OF XHE COUTV OF KIKGS.

fp The members of the above Committee arc requested to meet at No. 7 Front street, in the city of Brooklyn, on THURSDAY, tho 523d day of October, at 4 o'clock P. M. TUNIS G. BERGEN, Chairman.

Edward M.vcomher, Secretary. o20 4t Arrival of the HiberniaSe'ren Days Later from Europe, The steamship Hibcrnia, Capt. Ryri, arrived at Boston yesterday morning at 9 o'clock, with intelligence seven days later than was received by the Great Britain. She made the passage in 15 days, and brought 87 passengers. The Caledonia and Great Western, and the packet ships Stephen Whitnoy and Massachusetts, (the latter with her auxiliary screw propeller) had all arrived out in good time.

The Cotton market continues inactive. Quotations on most descriptions have receded Jd and all have a downward tendency. The Produce markets are likewise dull Sugar has receded a trifle, but Coffee has improved. In consequence of the heavy speculations in the railroad shares tho rate of interest has advanced. The accounts received from tho manufacturing districts, since the sailing of tho Great Britain, are of a satisfactory nature.

In the great woolen marts of Leeds and Huddcrsficld, tho stock of cloths on hand is somewhat small manufacturers were busily employed, especially in the getting out of goods for the winter season. Prices seem likely to advance. The. Harvest. The reports which have reached us since our last, respecting the progress made with the harvest in the north, are not of a character to allay the excitement previously felt on the subject.

The heavy rain which fell up" to the 21st inst. was succeeded by dry, but unusually cold 1 I 1 1 1 suiurp irosis weru uipcuenccu on uie mgnis 01 ine 22nd and 23rd instant, and though the temperature has since risen, the shift of wind to the southward threatens a return of wet. The interval of dry weather has hitherto been of too short duration to admit of much corn being carried, and the extreme cold has prevented that not before ripe making much progress towards maturity. It is, therefore, feared and not without reason that the more back ward parts of the kingdom may fare even worse than the south and as the reports of the yield from the former districts do not by any means improvo as thrashing is proceeded with, the estimates of the results of the harvest become daily more discouraging. Theso considerations have had their effect on the minds of sellers as well as buyers, and, with a greater inclination to purchase, less disposition has been manifested to sell.

The upward movement has, consequently continued, and at some of the principal markets materially enhanced terms have been paid for Wheat. By our Scotch advices, wo learn that the harvest operations, which had been interrupted by the heavy rain that fell bet.veen the 10th and 22d, had again been actively resumed it will, nevertheless, require some weeks of dry weather to get in what is still abroad. Tho lively reports from tho south had caused the sellers of wheat to demand materially enhanced terms. At Edinburgh the article rose about 3a. per qr.

and at Glasgow the rise amounted to 2s. Gd. per boll, being equal to 5s. per qr. Much anxiety was felt there to ascertain in how far the potato crop had been injured by the disease so prevalent in England, but as nothing very positive is stated on the subject, wo are are inclined to think the mischief is not great in that part of Die kingdom.

From Ireland, the complaints in regard to this matter are, however, becoming general, even along the west coast, where the crop was previously stated to have escaped injury, the loot has, it is said, been disoovercd to have been attacked. In the southern parts of the Island, tho bulk of tho grain had, we are informed, been got in, and even in the north the fields were fast being cleared. On the whole, wo are disposed to think the harvest will turn out better in Ireland than on this side of the channel. The rise in the English markets had had the effect of causing an advance in the value of both Wheat and Oats The price of Iron has increased in France. It is said that the quantity demanded by that country during the next four years can not bo obtained without the erection of additional woiks.

Earl Spencer (Lord Althorp) David Maclver, and Mrs. Fowler an excellent and hospitable woman have lately deceased. Ireland. O'Conncll has left his mountain homo to the great joy of the grouse and resumed his efforts in the cause of Repeal. At a banquet in Tipperary he spoke with his usual enthusiasm, and confidently predicted the local Parliament.

He has also addressed a monster meeting at Cashcl. France. All journals and parties in le grande capitale advise Mexico to grin and bear it." If she don't, say they, it will afford tho United States another opportunity to seize an additional slice if not the whole of the Mexican dominions. Hints of European interference, to prevent an inordinate extension of our territorial limits, are also thrown out, accompanied, we suppose, with ominous shakes of the head and rapid pinches of snuff. It is said that tho Government will, at the next session of the Chambers, introduce a wholesale reduction of postage.

There is nothing of interest in dumestic politics. Spain A comparative calm has settled down up on Madrid, though it is said that the eonspirators arc working silently. The 4 Great Powers' have not yet determined who the Queen shall marry it being understood, of course, that neither herself nor people have anything to say about it. Tho new contributions come in regularly from the provinces. I talv Is about to commence ncgociations for a treaty of commerce with the United States.

Gkrmany Is yet in hopo of getting the constitu lion which has been promised her more than thirty years. The king is said to be as willing now as ever. The religious agitation goes on, and Rouge is gaining new adherents. The potato crop is bad. Ui'M.

The Chambers have adopted a law are becoming a triflo too frequent to comport with a general state of morality. Tho Synod of New York (old school Fresby. tcrian) will convene in the Rev. Mr. Jacobus's church, corner of Pineapple and Fulton street, in this city, tomorrow afternoon.

Sing Singing Birds. A sad party of four convicts, under the conduct of Mr. Keeper Voorhis, wended their way, bright and early this morning, to the cloisters of Sing Sing. What a prospect is before them for the next few years The remainder of the recent Sessions convicts will follow them during the week. The County" Castle.

Some valuable improvements are in contemplation at the county jail. We learn that it is tho intention of the Supervisors apply to the next Legislature for an act to raise money for the purpose of completing the building upon the original plan which will includo the building of another wing for the female department. At present, the accommodations for women are not adequate and, under present circumstances, all prisoners, detained for crimes of tho most flagrant descriptions, are obliged to be put into tho same room with others committed for misdemeanors and smal' peccadilloes. The influence of suclnsn arrangement must be naturally very pernicious, inasmuch as the more innocent aro susceptible to evil example. The new arrangement, when complete, will afford opportunity for classifying the detenus, and obviate the danger of their spoiling by contact.

The front of the prison is also undergoing improvements, such as the construction of areas, the planting of shade trees, In the course of a short time this castellated pile wilj exhibit a much more agreeable appearance. Narrow Escape. As Mr. Gihnartin, of the firm of that name, who keep a wholesale fruit store at tho corner of Front and Fulton street, New York, was driving past our office, this morning, the horse took fright at a company of New York firemen, then marching by, and dashed with furious and unman agcble speed towards the ferry. Arriving at the ci of Fulton and Water streets, the horse turned into the latter street, hurling Mr.

Gilmartin out of the wagon between the wheels of which he passed in a very mysterious manner, continued nt the same mad pace, until he brought up against another wagon at the corner of Dock street. Mr. G. singularly received no other damage than a few slight bruises, and rents in his clothes. The horse was somewhat injured) and one of the Bhaftsof the wagon was broken.

Tho turn out belonged, we believe, to Mr. Conklin Carl. Why will they do it 7 A man yesterday afternoon attempted to cross the Fulton ferry under the strange delusion that he was encased in seven leagued boots for ho came rushing down to the New York slip, just as the boat was leaving, with such an expression upon his countenance as gave the spectators an idea that he intended to jump right over the ferry boat and the East river, and land somewhere on Brooklyn Heights. The gentleman, however, was sadly mistaken. His legs wero not long enough to reach even the boat at which they probably aimed, and down he went into the briny flood.

Certain benevolent individuals, attached to tho ferry, got him out with a rope and he was very scvero upon them for not slopping the boat when they saw him coming We should like to know why they did not? Accident. A young man named James Havy, in the employ of Mr. Harvey, grocer, corner of Myrtle avenue and Pearl street, was thrown off and severely kicked on the head by a horse, yesterday afternoon. He was trying a pair of spurs for tho first time, and they led to the accident. Although his life was dispaired of yesterday, he is likely to get well.

'The landlord, who durst not disobey, after many apolopes, dolivcred the watch with his message, to Rowan, who had overheard all that had passed? Perhaps the Squire could not have selected a worse subject for this gratuitous insult than Hamilton Rowan, who, seizing one of his travelling pistols which lay jn the window, immediately joined lbs trio, who were laughing heartily at the joke. Gentlemen," said Rowan, with great suavity, I'm sorry to interrupt your mirth. I delight in a joke myself, especially when it's good one. Hear what the Nation al Intclligcnger, published by Messrs. Gales Seaton, at Washington, says about editing a news paper: Many people estimate the ribility of a newspaper, and the industry and talents of its editor, by the quantity of editorial matter which it contains. It is comparatively an easy task for a frothy writer to pour out daily columns 01 words words, upon any and all subjects. His ideas may flow in ono weak, washy, everlasting flood," and his command of language may enable him to string them together liko a bunch of onions and his paper may be a meacrre and poor concern. But what is the labor, the toil of such a man, who displays his leaded matter ever so largely, to that imposed on the judicious, well informed editor, who exorcises his vocation with the hourly consciousness of his responsibilities and its duties, and devotes himself to the conduct of his paper with the same care and assiduity that a sensible Lawyer bestows upon a suit, a humane physician upon a patient, without regard to show or display! Indeed, the mere writing part of editing a paper, is but a small portion of the work.

The in. dustry is not even shown there. Tho care, the time employed in selecting, is far more important and the tact ot a good editor is better shown by the selections than anything else and that wc all know is half the battle, riut we have said, an editor ought to be estimated and his labors understood and appreciated, by the general conduct of his paper its tone its tern, per its uniform, consistent course its principles its aims its manliness its dignity its propriety. To preserve theso as they ought to be preserved, is enough to occupy fully the lime and attention of any man. If to this bo added, tho general supervision of the newspaper establishment, which most editors havo encounter, the wonder is, how can they find limo or room to write at all.
