Finch's suspicions of the presence ct a male ally of Nancy were allayed; and after a careful survey ol his surroundings he returned to the house. He decided to lay in wait for Nancy, and when returned, capture her.

He went Into kitchen and crawled under the table. Along after midnight tjie woman came in and dropped a bag of apples on the floor, and then, lit the candle, and, going over to the fireplace, poked the ashes. Her was toward Finch and he crawled from under table. Leveling his revolver at Nancy, shouted; "Hold up your hands!" The woman swung 'around like a flash and instantly blew out the candle. Practical Books on Suburban Architecture, FRANK T. LENT, 94 Liberty st. New York. A VOICE FROM THE JAIL. WHAT BERNARD FITZGERALD FINDS FAULT ABOUT.

To the of the Brooklyn Eagle: I was arrested on the 3d day of November, 1891 and taken before Judge Tighe on the 4th In he Butler street police court, the charge being assault, whldi consisted of pulling my wife by the 5ialr of the head out of the bed, as she distinctly told Judge Tighe in my own hearing. I was then remanded to Jail to appear again on the 13th of November, which I did, my wife then stating that I placed each of my hands on her shoulders and attempted to throw her down by getting my foot between her feet. "When I aaked her about her (IrjTt charge of pulling her of the hair by the head, she denied in the hearing of Judg Tighe that hi made such a charge. Now a3 to the particulars of this infamous prepared and got up story of her, allow me to state that on that very day I was cleaning my clothes In my "bedroom when my wife came in and ordered me out. re fused to go and she then assaulted me by throwing me on my back.

1 called for assistance to my stepson, her own son, and he responded. taking 'his mother out of the room. Not seeing my lawyer in court, I asked Judge TIgho to put back my case for a day or two, telling him earnestly and beseechingly that I expected my lawyer that morning. He flatly refused and ald that the case was called and must go on, the result of which was that an American citizen close on 77 years of age, was deprived of the assistance of counsel and unjustly, unlawfully and cruelly sent to Raymond street jail under bonds of $31)0 to keep the peHCe on untrue statements of this wife of mine. I am married to this woman about sixteen years.

She was then a widow with six children, their ages running from 5 to years. I gave every one of them a good home and always provided for them and 1 have taught Che oldest boy a good trade, at whloh I was working hard and honestly for these many years for the Hogan Brothers, railroad contractors, and also for Che Brooklyn City Railroad company and many others, who will gladly testify that Bernard Fllzgerald, the old man now inside the gloomy walls of Raymond street Jail. never did a dishonest or a dishonorable act while they knew him, but worked hard by the sweat of 'his brow for these people who are now persecuting him. I hope and trust that during the remainder of my life I will have Justice done to me. BERNARD F1TZGE RIA.LJ3.

How a Mysterious Woman Managed an Illicit Still by Dressing In Man's Clothes and Stealing Apples She Was Discovered, but Escaped Arrest.

Thla has been one of the biggest years for apple jaclc that New Jersey has ever known, and that means a gc od deal, for New Jersey probably turns out more of that beverage than any other state In the Union, and the residents of the rural districts drink it with the same freedom and gusto that New England rum was swallowed by. the natives of the Eastern states three quarters of a century ago. Everybody in the bock country drinks apple jack, from the father down to the child, and, strange as it may seem, there is rarely a case of drunkenness among them. Apple jacK is called Jersey lightning by outsiders, presumably because Of the heait i't possesses, and which is manifested by a burning sensation that follows a drink of it Into the stom ach; but when the beverage gets the proper age it becomes very oily and smooth, and, being the pure, unadulterated juice of apples. it lacks those unhealthy stomach destroying qualities peculiar to some of the liquors shoved across bars to drinkers in the hotels and saloons, East and West.

About this time of year a man who wants to lay in a stock of apple whisky for the purpose of selling or manufacturing not slings for his own delectation, can buy all he wants for from $1 to a gallon, provided he takes this year's make. As it grows old the price increases untu it reaches the three dollar a trallon" notch. This figure buys the best apple Jack procurable, and that means a mighty fine ar ticle tnat win cheer the soul and never rise to a man's head with sufficient force to make him feel as if it was about to burst open. xioguiar appie jacK tiistlllers are wllline to pay for the privilege of making it to the reve nue omcers, but there are hundreds of men wno, by means of an iron kettle, a conoer worm and a barrel of cold water, make enough me uquor to supply tnemselves and their neignoors witnout being found out bv the revenue officers. A good deal of this sort of work is done under ground; not in cellars, for tnat would, oe Imnossible without tlateettan but in caves, the entrance to which is always very cieveriy concealed.

Occasionally these moonsihiners are found out and broniht Justice, but they do not always surrender "tamely, and there aTe records in Warren and nuuxeraon counties of some pretty sharp and desperate scrimmages between secret distillers of apple Jack and revenue officers. len years ago the suspicion nf envortimar, officials was aroused by rumors to the effect mm. sumeuouy in warren county was doine "mnftTielilnftii Kn.l,n. a moonshine' business on wrmincnia For several weeks they hunted the over without running down their game, and iuej were convinced tnat tne still waB not far away. Suspicion was finally fused on a woman known as Crazy Nancy, who lived among the hills that lie along the Lake Pe quest river.

Nancy was a mystery to every xu. tuori. mscricc. rxoDoay seemed to know where she came from and they had no miuwieage 01 ner real name. She was a simple acting creature, coming to the various towns in the eastern and southeastern part of Warren county frequently.

In the summer she sold berries and in the winter she trapped and shot fur animals and all sorts of game that was marketable. She always had money in plenty and what seemed very strange was the fact that, while the woman appeared to be eccentric and of a light weight mentally, she could drive a bargain with all the shrewdness of a trained financier. Nancy had lived in the Pequest river country three years when the suspicion against her arouse, and it was materially strengthened by the habit Bhe had' of each winter dropping out of sight completely for a period of six weeks, when she would suddenly reappear in her usual haunts. A government detective was detailed to keep his eye on Nancy, and he did it for two months, during which time he was employed as a farm hand by a man who lived about two miles from Nancy's headquarters, which was a plain building of boards that stood against the face of a bluff that had been dug away to make it perpendicular. Originally this building was a barn, and it had been built in this sheltered locality to protect sheep from the cold winds and storms in winter.

The owner had gone out of the sheep raising business and had leased the building for a song to Nancy, who finally bought it, including two acres of ground which took in part of the hill. It was a lonely neighborhood and nobody cared to visit the queer woman, who appeared to rather enjoy her isolation than otherwise. The second year after Nancy showed up; the farmers along the Pequest river complained that their appie orchards were being frequently robbed and It was supposed that the thieves were boys. The farmers kept watch in their orchards and laid all sorts of traps to catch the thief or thieves, but they failed to corner him, and for two years the apple stealing went on. The detective's name was Finch, and his fiTst undertaking was to get acquainted with Nancy, but he made no headway for the woman aparently had no desire to become acquainted with any one for any other pur pose tnan to sell tnem something.

Being thwarted in this, Finch decided to keep a watch on tEe woman's habitation. This was a difficult thing for him to do without rousing the curiosity of his employer, but nights when he was supposed to be in bod or at the village store, he was watching Nancy's house from the cover of a clump of bushes near by. It was the fall of the year, and the nights got so cold that Finch began to think that he would be obliged to give up his vigil, when one night his long watch was rewarded. He saw a man approach the house with a heavy sack thrown over his shoulder and quickly enter. The mystery of the missing apples was at once clear to Finch, and he had no doubt that, they were taken to Nancy's house to be converted into applejack.

He had not suspected that the woman had male allies, and he began to have some doubts about it being safe to follow the case up single handed, but ho was a courageous fellow, and decided to win all the honors for himself if there were any to be had. For a week he kept tfie house under surveillance at night, but he never Baw the mysterious man again. He at last decided on a bold move, and arming himself one day when he saw Nancy pass down the road by the farm in the direction of Danvillo, he hurried to the woman's house, and being something of an expert at lock picking, he managed to open the door, and after patient work succeeded in locking it again. There was nothing about the interior of Nancy's home to create suspicion against the woman. A few stringB of dried apples hung over the Are I i yuuiimiu i lwu ju.y uu tue HOOT ana mere was no iurniture Dut a couple of chairs, a table and a stool.

A ladder led into the left through an open hatch, and up this ladder Finch climbed. With the exception of a rickety looking flour barrel that stood In a distant corner close under the eaves, there was no article in the loft. The boards were shrunken, and through the cracks the detective could get a full view of the room below. Finch decided to conceal himself behind the barrel and await developments. He had lain in wait about two hours when Nancy entered the room and went about preparing a meal.

It took her an hour to get through with this, and night had fallen. Finally Nancy took a lighted candle, and after locking the door ascended the ladder. She moved through tine loft to the farther end, and setting down the candle, began to cautiously remove some of the boards. When she had taken enough of them away to admit of the passage of her body she picked up he candle and, stepping through, bent over and made her way through a narrow hall running inta the hill to a door, which she pulled open and stepped beyond, shutting it after her. Considerably asDonished at his discovery, Finch remained in hiding, keeping his eye on the door.

In the course of a half hour it swung open and a man Stepped through and came into the loft. When he was standing in the full light of the candle the detective saw that It was Nancy in man's attire. Carefully replacing tne ooarus, tne woman went flown sialrs, i and, taking a sack from a closet, extinguished i the candle and went out. Finch concluded i that the woman wis en on apple stealing ex I pcdl'tion, and when she had been absent some time he descended to the roam below, lit the candle and returned it to the loft. Ho found It an easy matter to remove the boards, and cautiously he walked Into the passage.

When he arrived at the door it opened easily, and Finch found himself looking into larco she the she the he the to of of of an FOR SALE FLATBUSH PROPERTY A FEW building plots will be sold at auction prices to first cla ss parties onlv in a new section aJbut to be opened and would readily sell at auction for prices asked, but owner desires to make this a fine residential section and will not sell to anyone who would be a detriment to the neighborhood; It will pay vou to give this your Immediate attention; terms to suit. THE QUESTION OF HAMLET'S INSANITY UNSETTLED IN HAWVILLE. The Spread Eagle theater was well filled with the beauty and chivalry of the settle ment at the last session of the Hawville Debating society, upon which occasion the subject for discussion was: "Resolved, That th Melancholy Dane Was Mad," and bright the lamps, which had been kindly loaned for tho fevening by the genial and urbane proprietor the Dew Drop Inn and Blazing Rag Refreshment Parlors, shone o'er fair women anol bravo men, as the poet once got off. For some time all went merry as a marriaga bell, as what's his name used to say. Thero was no shooting, except in a single and amply Justified instance, when the harmonious flow the debate was interrupted by Polecat Pete, uncurrled personage, who, being filled with strong waters, arose and vociferously announced that he was a wolf. Thereupon Alkali Ike, who had been delegated to preserve the Deace, very appropriately remarked that, Inasmuch as Peter was a wolf the tlm was at hand for him to howl, at the earn time shooting him in the hind leg with a deftness horn of long practice.

A little later tho wolf had been cast Into outer darkness and. the debate went on. During the course of the evening the widow of Rawhide Jim begged the indulgence of tha meeting and, when it had been granted her, rose In her place and tearfully thanked all' of those present who had so kindly assisted la' the killing of her lamented husband. The debate was resumed at the close of tha' widow's remarks and was progressing smoothly toward a harmouious consummation when. Dr.

Potter, the well known undertaker, arose and began: "I don't know and I don't care whether Hamlet was mad or not, but I rise to remark that I am mad. and the more I think about the cause I have the madder I git! Hawville' possesses a Commercial club, which is supposed to be working for the upbuilding the various business enterprises in the settle ment and to bo keeping a vigilant and well skinned eye on the interest of its of whom now stands before you. 'Foster home is its shibboleth, so to speak, and. I'd like to ask in tones of thunder, why it don't live up to them words? I have tailored out that principle in my dealings with, my feller men, and whur am I at in consequence?" He had patronized his fellow tradesmen, even at times to his own detriment and in convenience, the doctor continued. Ho believed in reciprocity, and.

having fostered others, desired to be fostered in turn. "Live and let live, had alwaj been his business motto, and he had faithfully endeavored to abide by it, and darned little gcod it had. done him, according to his own statement. He dc slred to know why the Commercial elu had done nothing to advance his business in terests; why mombers of the community who claimed his patronage were so loath and slothful about patronizing him? There was entirely too much Jug handla business, with the handle continually in tho other fellow's grasp, in the way things had been going on during the past several months, and as for him, he was sick and tired of the way in which the cards were running and' earnestly desired a new deal. "Only three funerals in the last twenty days!" he declared bitterly, "and one of thorn: a fizzile, in which the customer proved to be in a cataleptic state, and revived and ran, away after I had gone to right smart of expense on his special account, and the othera two measly paupers that hadn't a dollar in their clothes nor a friend on earth!" The speaker continued by calling attention to the fact that there had not been a lynching in the last, six weeks, nor a fight wonth soeaklng of in two months.

It be gan to look, he declared, as if his fellow citizens wore in a deliberate conspiracy against him, and only shot, when they shot at all, such persons as were financially unable to pay for decent funerals. He concluded by requesting light on the subject for the present, and a new deal and a fair shake for the future, after which he paused for a reply. "Wal," remarked Alkali Ike, rather sarcastically, after Dr. Potter had subsided, "I am yere to say, and I reckon I voice the sentymunts of every gentleman within the sound of my voice when I say it, that it this yere enterprisin" man planter expects his feller citizens to stop, after pullin" their guns, an' consider whether or not the gent they aim to git is rich enough to pay for the pomp an' parry ferneelyer of a dude's obsequies, he is doomed to dissapointment a great plenty! I am willin' to foster him an' his industry to a reasonable extent, but If he expects me to request my prey to please wait for me around the corner while I go up an" nose through the tax books to see whur he It at, the doctor is askln' a heap too much. Bein' a man of the world an middlln' wide betwixt the eye'sv I have always done my shootln' first an'jny inquirin' later, an' 1 expect to so contihner to the end.

I have spoken." The question of ethics thus raised precipitated a spirited wrangle, which continued till the meeting finally broke up in great disorder, without having settled tha mental status of the unhappy Prince of Denmark, and it will probably never be definitely known whether or not Hamlet warn mad. The skles are sad and the fields are sodden, The wocds are reeking with rotten things; I walk In silence in ways untrodden, Far from the crcwd and the taunt that stlnge. What does It matter when fate has spoken? What can wo say that tho world should know ''We, whose hearts have been broken, broken. Broken ever so long ago." ALBERT BIGELOW PAINE.
