Appir to jjjo. F. James a son. JHoutaisne st. A TELEGRAM TO CLEVELAND FROM THE EMBURY M.

E. CHURCH ON BEHALF OF ARMENIA. A large and sympathetic audience gathered last evening at the Embury Memorial M. E. church, of which the Rev.

Dr. W. W. Bow dish Is pastor, to consider the recent outrages in Armenia. The audience was very attentive and gave expression to its sympathy, both hy a'generoua collection and by voting to send the folowing telegram: To the President: Sir The congregation of the Embury Memorial Methodist Episcopal church, in Brooklyn, New York, cordially indorses the joint resolution, passed by congress calling upon the signatory powers of the Berlin treaty to take steps to discharge their treaty obligations in behalf of the Christian subjects of the sultan, and urges that your excellency will at once transmit those resolutions to the government of the several powers.

WELLESLEY W. BOWDISH. Pastor. This action was taken upon motion of Mr. Quintard, and authority was given Arthur B.

Cook, secretary of the Brooklyn committee for Armenian relief, to send the telegram to President Cleveland. The first speaker was Frederick D. Greene. who is the author of "The Armenian Crisis In Turkey" and lived for several years in the cen ter of Armenia, where the massacres have occurred. He vividly described the outrages and the present awful destitution.

The most ap palling feature of the whole situation was not the cruelty or brutality of the Turks and Kurds, who have boen acting simply In ac cordance with their instincts and profession, but tho base treachery of the so called Chris tian powers in utterly falling to fulfill their mcst solemn treaty obligations in behalf of tho Armenians. Ho also stated that the present apathy on the part of people of America aB well as England has greatly increased the contempt of the Mohammedans for Christianity, and had driven many of the Armenians to accept Islam in the hope of receiving alms which their fellow Christians in other lands refused to send. Mr. Greeno said further that the failure of the United States government to secure Indemnity and satisfaction for outrages that had been committed upon American citizens in Armenia for several years had destroyed the prestige of America in Turkey to such an extent that the old clothes of a third rat Englishman afforded better protection than an American passport. Gregory Casparian of Brooklyn was next called upon.

He treated the subject from the standpoint of on Armenian. A brief address was then made by Arthur B. Cook, secretary of the Brooklyn committee for Armenian relief. HINDOO IDEAS OF GOD. THE SWAMI VIVEKANANDA LECTURES AT THE POUCH MANSION.

Leonard Corning of Munich will lecture on "The Idea of God as Expressed in tho Art of tho Ages" and "Tho Trinities of Pagan and Christian Art."
