not Blisba style to load a shotgun and hauirt the footsteps of his enemy. He has a way of getting back at the offender that is more effective, yet it seems to be entirely within the law. He goes and makes up a song about Mm. Ho cannot write, but there is no need of that, as ho never forgets. Ho takes his time and gets It perfect and there is haste even about ringing it, but when the right time comes Elisha la tlic re.

Ho finds his enemy in a crowd and then sings it to him. The victim generally laughs for awhile, but after about twenty verses, of a direct personal bearing, havo been sung, with Cho old iiton improving in voiee all the time, all the fun fades out of it and the victim may try to buy the singer off, but Elisha is incorruptible; nothing but death itself would keep him from singing the whole thing through. Elisha has a son, who, he says, promised even to excel him in making up songs, but as be grow up the boy inadvertently learned to road and his father fears that this will yet be the cause of the loss of the boy's natural gift. There is another old man over at Graham who writes poetry to order, but only for private consumption, so to speak. He turns his gift to profit.

THEY MAKE RHYMES TO ORDER AND SING THEM. Not long ago I came across a quaint little pamphlet containing a poem of thirty nine pages, without a pause or breathing place, entitled: "The Advantages and Disadvantages of the Marriage State, as Entered Into Religious or Irreligious Persons; Represented Under the Similitude of a Dream. Versifled by Refine Weekes." It was publisheod in Jamestown, N. in 1S36, being a reprint, it Is said, of an earlier publication; but of the author I am unable to speak, save that Refine Weekes was a woman.

The publisher discloses this much in his "dedication" of the little book, as he says: "Coming from so respectable a source as the female pen," etc. The poem recites an allegorical vision of four youmg men of Babylon, two sons of the bondwoman and "two of the woman free," who tried matri nrony after taking advice of an "ancient man" on the subject; and It is disappointing to find that but one out of the four made, after all, any kind of success of it. This Is a dlscourag ingly small percentage, and It is readily seen that the author started out with the firm determination to make the lesson good and strong. It Is a solemn warning of the dangers that beset the "maTriage state," such as people in view of ali the modern facilities for correcting such mistakes would not now stop to read only out of curiosity; but the pamphlet shows what a load of responsibility a publisher felt sixty years ago. A bouk.

whether for or against a thing, must.be serious. But of Refine Weekes didn't she have a pretty name was she Puritan or Pensylvanian, or a native Carolinian? Whoever or whatever she was she held her course through thirty nine solid pages of rhymo in solemn admonition, and, no doubt, had an admiring and truly Impressed circle of readers. In truth, I am Inclined to think the influence she exerted was entirely too far reaching, for there surely was never another locality with so many old maids and old bachelors. Whetiher Refine Wedkes was a native or not there Is no lack here of tho poetic temperament. There Js an old man named Elisha Kirkman who'soes around and aimr of lite own make and 'he sometimes uses talent with terrible offedt as a weapon for BCT uiug even wren people, wnen no feels that he has been oftejnded or Imposed upon it is Wiggins, Emily io Greene Moore, 33, to Rawson, 2 assmts Title Guar and Trust Co to Eleanor It Peabody and ano, trustees Bolinet, John, Jr, exr, to A EpplB nd nno, exrs Thatford.

11:22 A i he will call and offer a suitable oDituary poem. Pot a stated sum ho will agree to write a poem so long measuring wicn nis nanaa and of such and such quality, no mon oy to be Daid unitll perfect satisfaction is given. So far as is known his patrons are always satis fled, however. If the quality should fall a trifle below the sDecliications in tne contract the old man supplies that deficiency by giving good, long measure, or if the quantity is a little short he makes it up in intensity, tnus illnstratine in a oDUlar and striiring man ner one phase of poetic license. But his work is not confined to obituaries alone.

It is not necessary for a person to die in order to have himself pleasantly mentionea verse if he is able to afford it. It is said that one of the old man's best productions is about a man who rolled 52S feet down a mountainside and is still living. Chicago Recoixi. THE OTHER MAN WAS BUTCHERED, AND THE GIRL HAD TO WAIT FOR HER TRAIN ALONE. The young man, it was evident, had come dawn to see his girl off, and as they sat In the waiting room of the Northwestern depot he did many tilings of witty sort to entertain her, and, truth to tell, she laughed right read ilv.

Finally two Chinamen, who had proba blv lust off an incoming train, en tered, and while one stood idly by a pillar the other continued on toward the baggage room. "You didn't know I could talk Chinese, did you?" queried the entertaining young man. "Te. he. he.

The idea." observed tho girl. "But I oaai, and I'll prove It to you. I'm going over and engage that John in conversa tion his own language." "You wouldn't dare." said the girl. "Why not? He'll be glad to hear it He must be lonesome so far awity from home and mother." And the humorist advanced totvard the unfortunate Chinee who was to be butch ered to make a gum chewing girl's holiday. The Mongol was within earshot, of course, so the girl could readily hear when her escort spoke thus: "HI yi.

Kl yah, kl ho. Ho yah yah hooey ho." The Chinaman looked puzzled and the girl was convulsed. "Ho he; do re mi fah sul lah si do," de cl'ared the youth. The girl "like to died," and then the Con fucian spoke. "My friend," he said, "if you desire to inti mate that you have a gold brick which you will sell art a bargain, or if you want to convey the idea that you know where green goodK may be purchased from a conscientious and reliable man you are wasting your time, your vowels and your breath.

Unfortunately I am not In that line. I am only a dealer In Ori ental goods, with headquarters in San Fran Cisco, and visiting Chicago for the purpose of putting 'In a branch here. I wish you would go away now, for there is an t.o3j;hero about you which tells me that stale beer Is still an article prominent in the city's com merce, and your clothes inform me that the pawnshops continue to riot in South Clark street. I note, too, that you have not a very cleanly regard for your nails, and that your tie is ready made. Now, Mr.

Sul Hong," to the other Chinaman, who had by this time reappeared, "if you have arranged about the baggage we will take a carriage to the hotel." It still lacked twenty minutes the time when the girl's train was due to leave, but she waitea tnose twenty minutes alone. Chicago Record. HOW H. O. A.

WAS CHANGED TO READ A. O. H. "I was invited while in New York a few months ago," sand Father Clark, "to attend the dedication of a Hebrew orphan asylum in one of the adjacent suburban towns. The trustees had procured a forty foot burgee of red, white and blue, which was to be flung to the breeze from the top of the building.

On the car on which I went out were a number of the committee who had bought the streamer. They were discussing with great anticipation the effect of the piece of bunting, when, suddenly, the building loomed into view with the flag streaming to the wind. Imagine tho consternation of the gentlemen when they saw instead of the letters they had ordered, 'A. O. standing out In bold relief.

There was talk that might have made an Irishman uncomfortable, but their anger was short lived. As soon as they saw the other side, the initials, 'H. O. were in their proper order." San Francisco Chronicle. IN COMMON COUNCIL.
