1 ..113 10951 9 CauSuutb. Chicago A 100 Chlcae Alt. 173 ering and buying for the long account. At 2 o'clock December was 96. At Chicago Liverpool cables were a surprise to wheat traders.

In spite of the weakness here yesterday, that market opened off only a'id and at 1:30 P. M. showed aMd advance. This and the continued falling off in Northwest receipts started wheat strong, December opening ac higher at 91a and soon advancing to 92. More interest centered in the May option than in the fearer futures, and arter the opening flurry December was offered for sale, while there was a big demand for May.

The result was that the December prmeium dropped about a cent, December easing off to 91a92, while May, which opened higher at 90, advanced to Chicago receipts were 144 cars. Advices as to the Hungarian and Russian crops are again unfavorable. World's shipments for the week are expected to be about 5,000,000 bushels. Up to noon May sold between and 919s, and December between 91 and 32. It became firmer after midday, December reaching 93 by 1 o'clock, which was cent over calls.

May at this time was 92. The advance was due chiefly to the export demand. Wheat closed here at an advance of 2a 3 cents. At Chicago the close was at an advance of 3a3 cents. The market for corn opened firm with wheat and was helped by cables, which reported a recovery of a decline of Vid, seen at the opening with the econd cable reporting a net advance of ad on yesterday's closing prices.

The local market for corn opened higher with December showing 30c. The Chicago market for corn opened at yesterday's closing prices with December at 25c, subsequently selling at 25c and then at 25c. To noon the sales here were 100,000 bushels with December selling up to 31. It held steady at that price until this sharp advance in wheat carried it up to 31 by 2 o'clock. At Chicago by noon time December reached 26 and touched 26 in the late trade.

Corn closed here 1 cent higher. At Chicago it closed lal cents higher. There was no disposition to trade in oats at New York. At Chicago the market lor oats opened Vc higher, December showing ISHc, later 18ttc and then easing back to the opening price. Soon after the opening there was some activity in the New York market, with 2314c paid for December.

Oats closed a cent higher here and cent higher at Chicago. The export business to day was 65 loads of wheat here and 30 loads at outports, 12 loads of corn and 175,000 bushels of oats. NEW YORK GRAIN AND PROVISIONS. Chi. Gt.

In the exchange of 2,000 bags December for July 35 points were paid and in the exchange of 2,500 bags December for September 45 points were paid. Trading during the forenoon was local with the usual weak undertone, receipts at primary points being heavy and there being an entire lack of outside speculative interest. At the time Havre and Hamburg cables were not encouraging and the Rio and Santos cables were featureless, except as they Indicated receipts of 54,000 bags. Continued liberal warehouse deliveries in the United States and low prices checked selling. Keokuk Des Keokuk Sc Des M.pt Keokuk Western. Long Island the whole matter "will be the purchase of the property by the commictee which has prepared the plan, which has organized the syndicate to underwrite all ios financial necessities and which will probably go to the sale of the road prepared to bid more than any other interest could possibly offer. It would be regarded as little short of extraordinary If Mr. Sage could at this late day find bankers enough Who are' not in the original syndicate to make up a now one and deposit Che necessary percentage of funds with the court in advance of the knocking down of the property. Such a result would bring upon us a great disturbance of the money market, in the first place, and it would be even more unsatisfactory a matter for 'the general situation of finance to have the plan for the re habita'tion of the property altered now as i't would no doubt be altered if an independent interest were to get hold of road at the foreclosure sale.

The present committee lias collected two thirds of the assessment on 'the stock and it would probably fight hard to the end before it would submit to a situation involving the confession to security holders that it is unable to proceed along the lines originally specified. It is well to remember that the committee is by no means restricted in its bid to t'he amount named in the so called agreement witti the United States attorney general, for it can increase its bid a good many millions if it sees fit with the proceeds of a portion of the block of bonds which it is holding back under the plan of reorganization for auy unforeseen contingencies that may arise and make necessary the amendment of the original plans. The committee has too strong a backing, with 8f 5.60 5.50 0.15 11.20 6.30 0.40 10 80 1 Sou A 4 A P4. (1051 I 00. 2 (1 1 1 southern Ry 9151 10 To! ramifications in Vanderbilt and other quarters, to give in without a struggle to the attack of any new syndicate organized without other reason than chance of speculative gain. This, however, is not intended to belittle some of the just claims that are made that there are points about the syndicate agreement with the government which are on business and moral grounds. The market this morning opened with a moderate display of strength, considering the weakness of prices in London and the agitation of the Union Pacific syndicate matter. First prices were about a quarter per cent, lower than the close of Thursday, but there was a prompt rally of a quarter or more on covering of short contracts. In a short time, however, the downward course of prices was resumed, and the market for the active stocks was forced off to a level nearly a point below last evening.

This decline was partly due to the discussion of Cuban and Spanish affairs. Buying orders were uncovered on the declines in the grangers and some of the industrials. Gould stocks were steadier than many other active groups. The Chicago Gas settlement had lost much of its interest for the market. Mr.

Sage madu a sweeping denial of statements concerning his connection with an opposition Uion Pacific syndicate during the afternoon, but General Samuel Thomas rather strongly intimated that there might be something in the current stories after all. The general market became very dull and steady, the commission houses having no orders of importance. The close was inactive, but firm, the buyiDg of Chicago Gas having some influence upon the general market. MONEY. Call money was easy, with business chiefly at 2a2Va per cent.

For time money the demand was good at 3a3 per cent, for short and 3a4 per cent, at long dates, on good active Stock Exchange collateral. Commercial paper is coming out freely and rates are easy at 4 per cent, for the best double names. The banks are now loaning about $4,000,000 on the security of long sterling bills. Clearing House statement: Exchanges, balances, sub treasury debit balance. $330,012.

FOREIGN EXCHANGE. The market was firm ou the large demand for bills from remitters, but the offerings of commercial bills were good. Rates for exchange are: Sixty day. Sight. Sterling, $1.83 84.854 Hterllne.
