I have known Hoeflland'a Oerman Bitten favorably for a number of years. I have used them in my own family and have been so pleased with their offsets that I was induced to recommend them to many others, and know that they have operated in a strikingly benefieial manner. I take great pleasure in tnas publicly proclaiming this fact, and calliarr tnflAWeatioTiof those afoicted with tbe diseases for wnici, tnev recommended, to those Bitters, knowing from experience tnat my recommnndation will be sustained. 1 ao this more oneerfully aa Hootland's Bitters is intended to benefit afflicted, and is "not a mm drink." From Rer. J. Newton Brown, D. Editor of the ISacy olopedis of Religions Koowledtre and Chriatlaji Chroaiclt Fhiladelpnta. Altnough not disposed to favor or recommend Patent Medicines in general, through distrust of their ingredients aud effects, I yet know of no sufficient reason why a man may not testify to the benefits he believes himself to have received from any simple preparation, in the hope that he may thus contribute to the beneQt of others.

I do this the more readily in regard to Hoofland's Oerman Bitters, prepared by Dr. O. M. Jackson, of this city, because I was prejudiced against Ihem for manyyeara, under the impression that they were chiefly an alcoholic mixture. I am Indebted to my friend, Robert Shoemaker, for the removal of this prejudice byproper tests, ana for encouragement to try them when suffering from great and lone continued debility.

The use of tbree bottles of these bitters at the beginning of the present year, was followed by evident relief and restoration to a degree of bodily and mental vigor which I had not felt for six months before, and had almost despaired of regaining. I therefore thank God and my friend for directing me to the use them. J. NEWTON BROWN, PhUada. Krom the Ber.

A United States detective officer found last week in Warren county, N. a tin box containing counterfeit United States notes to the amount of $25,000.

An Idaho letter says the business of counterfeiting gold dust is oarricd on to a serious extent, and the authorities of the Territory have been called upon to suppress it. Grief over the tragic end of his son was supposed to have hastened the father's decease. On Tuesday last, Wm. Proctor, the last surviving child of the family, died. Among the ghastly statistics of the year are those furnished by the Coronet of New York, who informs us that there have been 61 suicides since January last, 36 infanticides, and 234 cases of drowning by acoident or "otherwise." It is not clear what that latter expression Perhaps "murder by some person or persons unknown." The London Court Journal announces that her Eoyal Highness, the Princess of Walos, is and the Princess Helena also is In the first case, "early in tho ensuing year," and in the latter "in April," are tho specified occasions.

'ali'prtfuii Bays; A new method of catching whales has been tried with considerable success, science having eontributed to its discovery.

Our readers are well awaro of tho deadly effects of the Indian poison eaUotl curare or woorali, concerning which wo have often had occassion to record the most interesting experiments, especially in mentioning the attempts made to use it as a specific for lockjaw, its peculiar action consisting in relaxing the muscular system. Strychnine is a poison producing a contrary effect, the excessive contraction of the system, or, in other words, tetanus or lockjaw. It is a curious fact that by tho conjunction of these two agents, so diametrically opposite in their effects, a poiion is obtained that will kill almost instantly if only administered in tho dose of half a milligr. per kilo, of tho animal to be subjected to its action, provided itu weight do not exceed ten kilos. If larger tho dose must be proportionately increased.

M. Thiercelm, tho inventor of this poiiOh, composed it by mixing a salt of strychnine withone twentieth of woorali. To apply it to whale fishing ho makes the compound up into cartridges of thirty gms, ounce) each, which iB enough to kill an animal of sixty thousand kilos, weight. Each cartridge is imbedded in the gunpowder contained in an explosive shell, which is firod off on tho whale. In a late whaling voyage ten whales received such missiles, and nil died within from four to eighteen minutes after the infliction of tho wound.

Out of theso ten whales, six were cut up for their blubber and whalebone. Their remains were handled by careless wen, who frequently had acratohos and sores on their skin, and yet not ono of them suffered tha slightest iujnry a circumstance which ehows that tho poison cannot be, transmitted from the fish to tho men. Its poisonous action on tho whale is, however, so great, that practically the doso will have to be clinimished, so that tho death of tho creature may notbe so sudden. We should not forget to stato that two out of tho ton whales above mentioned wcro lost by one of tho mmy accidents incident to whaling, and that two olliets were of a kind that is nut worth fishing for.
