Oats Ruled Quiet and Provisions Were Dull but Steady Bradstreet's Visible Supply Beports. The wheat market opened with the trade allowing an indifferent feeling, which was disappointing, in view of the decided firmness late yesterday. The Liverpool market was only up. which was discouraging, in view of the loss of to per cent, in the price of British consols, carrying the market' down to the lowest figures for eight years. The drop in consols was largely due to tight money, however.

The volume of foreign trade was insignificant, business being almost entirely professional and small at that. The receipts In the Northwest were 1,130 cars, against 1,945 cars last year. The grading of the wheat receipts in the Northwest is much better than last year, which is somewhat surprising, considering the reported wet weather after harvest. The movement In the Northwest is believed to be somewhat hampered by the scarcity of cars, and on that account the lighter receipts do not have as much of an influence on the market as they otherwise would. The advance in wheat of 4 to 4c from the lowest Is attracting a little speculative interest, due to the fact that the rise has brought out rather clearly some of the bull influences.

The Transvaal news is a disturbing factor, not ln.itself, but in the possible complications. Europe is a fair buyer of grain and must continue to be. The visible is increasing rapidly, however, in face of liberal clearances. The strength and demand for all feeding stuffs i3 a strong feature in the wheat situation and is looked upon as likely to help prices. Wheat was weak in the early afternoon on realizing by steadying at the close on export sales of about 45 loads, mainly at outports.

The trade in corn was not large, but the tone of the market was very firm, notwithstanding the heaviness in wheat. This was due to the strength on the other side, prices being up to in Liverpool, both in spots and futures. The strength abroad gave direct encouragement that the demand for corn would be kept up, and, as the foreign demand is at present absorbing a very large proportion of the receipts, the quality of this demand is naturally very important. Corn was steady at the close on export sales of 80 loads, mainly outports. There were light dealings in oats, but prices were Arm, the market being influenced by the firmness abroad in oats, and by the fact that the clearances continue very heavy, showing that the amount of oats bought is materially more than is shown by the day to day reports of export business.

Oats closed quiet and about steady. Exporters took 5,000 bushels. The trade in hog products is quiet, with prices about steady, the market varying but little from day to day. Live hogs were a little easier, and the yellow fever reports continue to Influence operations. Provisions were dull and barely steady at the close.

Opening prices were unchanged to five points decline, and there seemed to be quite a little pressure in the early dealings. The offerings were taken rather slowly, and there some disappointment at the European news. Brazilian markets were showing a rise of 100 reis. The tight money market was without doubt an important factor, as the large stocks of coffee make the Bnancial problem a feature. The total American visible supply of Rio coffee is 1,355.611 bags, against 963,943 bags last year and the stock of other coffee 360,409 bags.
