The Distilleries of America and National Tube issues both shared declines in prices without sales, the Distilleries' issues both declining point and the Tube issues point. Amalgamated Copper was also off, declining to 86 on sales of a few hundred shares. The Amsterdam Gas stocks were unaffected by the weakness of tho rest of the market; the common advanced to 30 and the preferred to 57. Odd lots the preferred sold at 68. The cause for the strength of these Issues was attributed to inside buying.

The National Salt stock also advanced on what was considered excellent buying. The common, which has been offered at 45 for the past few days, sold at 45, and the preferred advanced to 77 without sales. These stocks are both closely held and the buying to day waB apparently for the account of the insiders. Bay State Gas, which was so erratic yesterday, opened at 1, and before the close sold up to 2 and closed with a gain of yt point for the day, notwithstanding the fact that the rumors of yesterday in regard to this stock were denied. There are still many people who are Arm believers in the stock and the advance to day was attributed to the buying for thier account.

Brooklyn Ferry stock continues to advance. The market for metals during the past week has been a repetition of the previous week in regard to lower quotations and dul ness. The market for iron remains very dull, while some of the iron furnaces are asking more money to make sales. Warrants for next year's deliveries are offered at from $1 to $2 below spot Quotations, without finding any disposition on the part of buyers to take advantage of the low offerings. Spot closed at while March to May for next year's deliveries were offered at $16. The foreign iron market was not affected by the lower offerings here and held firm throughout the week without any material change in quotations.

Glasgow closed at 70s 9dt and Middlesboro warrants closed at 69s 4d. The market for copper has been dull with a noticeable weakness, which set In during the middle of the period when official prices declined to 17 cents per pound for Lake. This figure represents a decline of iy2c per pound within the past two weeks and, it is said, it would not be surprising to see further declines In the coming week. The market closed dull and business very small. Spot and nearby deliveries closed at 17c.

The foreign market responded somewhat to this decline here, but closed the week without any material change from last week's figures. The exports for the first two days of November amounted to 913 tons, as per Metal Exchange returns. Lead closed quiet with unchanged quotations, and business during the period was of the hand to mouth order. Spot and nearby deliveries H48.1 67,700 735.808,200 16,21 1,700 Ifoamtltcm to be bid up by houses representing inside interests and the tendency to await developments by the holders of stock is attributed to the scarcity of the offerings of the stock. The market for both crude and refined petroleum continued active and strong during the week, with a further substantial advance in the price for the refined product. Activity in the fields continues as a result of the high prices for oil. Producers and operators are making renewed efforts to discover new productive territory, but in only a few instances nave they met with great success.

During the month of October there were 886 wells completed In the Pennsylvania fields, an increase of 83 as compared with the preceding month. The daily average production was 11,840 barrels, a gain of 2,161 barrels as compared with September. In the Ohio fields 342 wells were completed in October and the new production was 5,700 barrels. This shows an increase of 33 wells and an increase of 330 barrels in new production as compared' with September. In the Indiana fields 118 wells were completed with a daily average production of 2,010 barrels, which is an increase of 12 wells and 25 barrels in new production.

The Oil City Derrick says that tho number of wells completed in the Pennsylvania fields during October was larger than during any previous month in the history of the oil industry, but that the record for new production is held by October, 1891, when the McDonald field was at the zenith of its phenomenal career. Refined petroleum closed at 9.25 cents per gallon in barrels and 6.75 cents In bulk at New York, Philadelphia prices being on a basis 5 points lower. Foreign quotations were: London 7 16d. per imperial gallon; Antwerp 22 francs per 100 kilos, and Bremen 8:15 marks per 50 kilos. COKE INDUSTRY BOOMING.

Pittsburg There is great activity in the coke region and much new work of an extensive character is being done there. The American Steel and Wire Company Is building 1,000 beehive ovens at Masontown; the Federal Steel Company is building 1,200 ovens at New Salem and the Connellsville Coke Company is erecting 1,000 ovens south of Uniontown. Each of these coke works, when completed, will be among the largest in the world and will equal any of the Frlck plants In the region. THE HAY AND STRAW MARKETS. Bradstreet's says: "While showing some increase in number and liabilities over the summer and autumn months, business embarrassments for the month of October furnish very satisfactory comparisons with corresponding months of other years.

There were 816 failures, involving SC. 774. 000 in liabilities, a decrease of 21 per cent, in number and of 54 per cent in liabilities from October a year ago, and comparisons with earlier years are even more favorable. The tendency noted for some time past toward a shrinkage in the percentage of assets to liabilit'es is still maintained, the proportion for October being less than 40 per against 56 per cent, in October a year ago. Owing largely to increased population there were more failures in the territories (his year than last, but the liabilities involved are smaller, the only increase in liabilities, in fact, being reported from the Pacific grounp.

Perhaps the best showing as regards number of liabilities is reported from the South, where October failures and liabilities this year are less than half what they were a year ago. For the ten months failures in the country as a whole are 20 per cent, fewer in number, and liabilities are 38 per cent, smaller than last year." AMERICAN MALT COMPANY BONDS An impression prevails In some quarters that the issue of $4,000,000 first mortgage bonds with a provision for a sinking fund, by the American Malting Company, to secure a larger working capital, will increase the expenses of the company. This is denied by the officials, who say that the company has long been handicapped by reason of its inadequate working capital, and has been forced to borrow considerable money in the market to carry on its business. This placed it at the mercy of money lenders, while the interest rates were changeable and uncertain. It can better afford to nay a steady, fixed interest rate of 6 per cent, on $4,000,000, than to borrow at fluctuating rates, and at times of stringency perhaps be unable to borrow at all.

With an adeauate working capital on hand it is believed that the company will be able to effect a considerable saving in interest charges and at the same time render itself independent and unhampered at times of adverse monetary conditions. The policy of the company has been to buy barley against all contracts made for malt, while admitted to be the best business policy, made the possession of adequate financial resources a necessity.
