It is not alone in Brooklys. that the Fair will have an influence. Manufacturers and dealers in New York and even the remote Jersey City will be largely represented at it, while throughout Long Island a show of agricultural implements and improvements should be made which might throw into the shade the similar exhibition of last year in New York. The advantages accruing from this gathering of the arts and industries cannot be overestimated. It will re animate trade at the very moment when the Fall season is about to commence, stimulate competition in almost every branch of labor which mankind cannot do without, and establish the precedent of annual expositions of industry, suoh as cannot fail to place Brooklyn in her proper position as an industrial city.

In chronicling the tact that the Board of Aldermen were about to reassemble after their Summer vacation, the E.v&m. yesterday took occasion to comment on the self evident depreciation in the character of our local public bodies. It would seem from the proceedings of the Aldermen, last evening, as if certain members of that body desired to give force and emphasis to the Eagle's criticism, while it must be conceded, on the other hand, that tho majority displayed a Bpirit of manly independence that roso above party differences, and which recalls recollections of the proceedings of the Board of Aldermen before a position in it came to be accepted as a resource by which a living could be made, and before politics came to be as a trade. Hopes offered a preamble and resolution declaring the James street market a nuisance, and authorizing the Controller to Bell it, and ascertain what steps could be taken to establhh an open market thc e. In moving the adoption of the resolution, Aid. Ropes said: Tho Alderman from the Second Ward a short time ago, took occasion to say that ho regarded the character of the keeper of that market to be as good asmine.

Now, I hope it is I hope It is better, for If it is not as good it might bo better. I hope, howover, that with the oritiolsm of my friend from the Second, and with the help of God, I hope to make it as good as it should be. And, now, as to Phil. Doherty, I am not clear in my own mind as to what olalms he'may have upon the city, but if it can be chown that tho oity must provido for him I think provision cm be rr.ac"e for him in some other way than is done at present. The monthly salary of that keeper is or $800 per year, and fn eighteen months I find, on refei ring to tho Controller books, that $451.50 was the amount turned over to the city.

I do not know bnt what that la right, only it does not aeern so to me I have made A DISCOVERY within the last few daj and I find that since July, in Augnet, the rents have been raised. The total amount in July was $63, In August $104. Mr. TurnbuU from $22 to $30 Mr. Crummy from $10 to $16 Mr.

Now what ia the reason of all thiB, and why this favoritism Why advance one man's rent $35, another $50, another $500, and others none at all? What, I ask, is the reason of all this 7 Up to July the amount returned by the clerk averaged about one dollar and a quarter and then there were the gan blllr, to fay, and some monthB they would run up to tB4 and $70. It seems to mo that after all that has been Bald about this market, the way in which it has been written down by the newspapers, the feeling which exl against it on the part of the paoplo in that vicinity, and that the Health and Bollce Departments are ready to present it as a nuisance, it seemB to me I say in view of all these faols that it is a place not fit to be continued, for all classes are desirous of getting it away, and I hope, therefore, that the membcra of thia Board will not withhold their aanotion for its removal. SenBatlonl As a Bepublican I ought not, I suppose, to have any objection to that, but as a citizen, above and beyond party, I do most solemnly object.

Tho Corporation Counsel was elected by a unanimous vote of this Board, and I am not aware of anything that officer has done, or left undone, that I Bhould subjeot him to a vote of want of confidence on the part of this Board, as would be the case if we authorized the Mayor to appoint two good lawyers, especially after the statomeut from tho Alderman of the Seventh, that the Corporation Counsel haa been "Bees."
