A Contested Proprietor his son bad ever beard from blm. Do not dare even to mention your mother." Keith as BiltUt, I pity yon; I will no, forsake you," the parson went on, blB bands shaking as he spoke, and his white face aflame. I will help you to redeem yourself, if possible. But never dare for one inBtant to compare your marriage to my marriage, your wife to mine. What can you know yon miserable boy of socb a lore aa ours How could you.

and the hundreds of fooliBh lads like, you, unders'Jmd what a man's loveis one pure love for oae pure woman founded on thorough knowledge and lonc lested fidelity; tried by many temptations, clung to tbrough years of delay and hopelessness, and then perfected openly, honorably, in sight of God and man, by the closest union with which mortal life can bo blessed. Keith Garland, you may Uyo many years livo not unworthily or unhappily, but you will never know, never comprehend a marriage such as miue. So the good old parson takes his daughter in law home, after seeing his son off to Canada. The next two years and a half make a lady of the poor girl, and a rich man of Keith. The ties of affection grow strong between the lenely old man and the poor trusting girl.

Nature has given her brains, and the daily intercourse with one of the noblest of human beings, refines, educates and develops in her all native and latent intellect and womanly gentleness. The old man learns to love her deeply, and she him. But it is far otherwise with the absent husband. 'He thinks of her only as what she was when he left, and time has brought home to him the insanity of such a marriage. He write3 constantly to his lather, but sends only a few cold messages to her, nor does he seem disposed to fetch her or send for her.

The poor child suffers deeply, loving him as tenderly as ever. At last she asks the old man why he does not come, and if she is the cause. He tells her he fears it is so, for they have no concealments in their interchange of thoughts. A stroke of paralysis, but only affecting the right arm, makes her resolve to bring his son back to him. She has no thought of herself; and this is the touching letter she writes to accomplish her purpose: "Deab Husband" (and then "husband" was crossed out and "Dear 8ir" put Instead): "If I may make bold to say it, you ought to come borne to your fattier.

He is breaking his heart for you, and nothing will ever comfort him but the sight of you. Plasa come at once, "i take this opportunity of saying, what 1 ought to have eaid a good while ago, that oars having been such an unsuitable and unfortunate marriage, I will not bo a trouble and a burden to you any more; but as soon as you come to the Parsonage, I will leave it. Also since as your father tolls me there is a place in London where people unhappily married can get rid of one another, so as to be free to marry again; if you wish to get rid of me. so as to be able to marry somebody els more suitable for you, do it; I shall not object. I would never have let you marry me, had I seen things as I do now, or had I ever known your father.

"I remain, your obedient wife, "Chablotte Gabxasd." The husband cannot understand the wife. He is indignant and thinks her motive was a desire to get rid of him. But his father sees it all. ntlifllAK'S TRUST LNSUKANOB OOJV1 t1 PANY OF BROOKLYN. a.

DISEASES OF THE THROAT, ASTHMA. Affections of the To ice, Laryngeal, Bronchial and Pulmonary Complaints, Disordered Fonotions of the Digestive Organs. TESTIMONIALS. CONSUMPTION CORED. I was in a most precarious condition, suffering from cough, debility, difficulty in breathing, a kind of oonatrietion in my chest.

I have been treated Dy the moefc eminent physicians, but I felt my streDth gradually lessen and my body became weaker every day, until at last I became Quito prostrated. The least change of weather brought on hot and oold shivers, with a racking pain in my head and a sharp pain in different jointa of my body. I was entirely emaciated from opmtant expectoration of a bloor matter. My friends, by the advice of Rev, Dr. Dal ton, brought me to Dr.

Von Eiienberg, of No. VI Fifth avenue. After an examination, he told so correctly all I felt, that I at once placed myielf under his treatment, and next day I felt as if a pressure had been removed from my body. After eight days I feel lam a man again, a blessing I have not enjoyed' fer year. I do Bay that sacb a man Dr.

Von Eisonberg ought to live forever, and I am sure that every liberal and candid man, who will be treated by Dr. Von Eisenberg, will acknowledge him a a humane and eminently successful physician. I givethis unsolicited. In compliance with the Doctor's orders, I will be shortly in Now York, and I will be happy to bear personal witness to the i skill and science of Dr. Von Eisenberg.

JAMES T. PDTNAM, Lynchburg, ya, SBFXEMBEB 27th, I8C4. DEAFNESS CURED. I have been deaf for ever twenty five years, and Dr. Von Stsenberg operated on both of my eara witbout the slightest pain a thing that I could not believe could be done.

I now hear well, and feel as I never felt for the last twenty yean. The dexterity and skill with which the oueration was performed evince the highest practicability. I hear perfectly. It is now over a month since the operation, and I continue to feel as well as ever. WILLIAM Harlem, 126th street, between 2d and 3d ava This certifies that my mother hai been for some time ifflicted with partial deafness, Buffering from pain and rambling noises in the bead, together with other indications of a total loss of bearing.

Dr. Von Eiftunberg remov fromhor ears a Quantity of matter, together with coagulated blood, relieving her instantaneonsly, and all without pain. It is with grateful thanks that I give this testimony to his skill. CARROLL J. POST, 28 South st.

CHRONIC CATARRH CURED. "This is to certify that I have Buffered from very severe, CHRONIC CATARRH, with a dull heaviness in the head. I felt my nose completely stopped up, accompanied by continual boreneaa of the throat, the chills stealing over me with ocasional hot flushes, a great of the obest and pain, so much so that every one thought it was eon sumption. Having heard of the great cores performed by Dr. Von Eisenberg, I consorted him witb but little hopes of a care.

I am now happy to be enabled to add my testimonial the great number already in the Doctor's possession, as to his Bcient ino and successful mode of treatment, as he has ia my ease that skill and knowledge which hare procured for him so great a reputation. I am so entirety restored to perfeot health that I do most sincerely recommend all sufferers from OHRONIO CATARRH and SORE THROAT to apply at once to Dr. Von Eisenberg with a tertatnty of being oured. FREDERICK WEBER, No. 369 Fourth strtBt.

Sr. Von Eisenberg has to state that in inviting the first authorities from the best Medical Colleges of New York to witness the operation and effect of his extraordinary valuable inventi dm with its new and wonderful additions, it must be understood that it does not cure every ailment in the world, but it does oure all the diseases above onume ated, each as Impaired Sight Noises in tbe Head, Discharge from the Ear, Deafness, Sore Throat, Chronic Oa Wtrrh in ite worBt stage, Lung and Liver Disease, Inflam aution of the Ak Cells of the Lnnga, reetores the Nervous Power, cures Consumption, Phthisis or wasting away. Certainly, if we consider the rariotu constitutions affect ad with the same disease, it is evident that each sufferer from the same disease requires quite a different treatment. It la therefore obvious that no physician can honestly undertake the treatment of any patient, until he makes a thorough ana sincere diagnosis and investigation. Thousands have been cured by one application of his fiithetlco Neuralgicon.

Dr. VON BISENBERG has no nostrum requiring secrecy to insure its efficacy, for his treatment is based on long experience, assiduous attention son tinned and successful practice, and by his peouliar process he is enabled to restore the sufferer to his normal condition of health. Hundreds, it Is well known, have some forward to testify publicly, that they were cured by a single application; and many, as they themselves express, hav been actually saved from the grave. Dr. VOK EISRNBEKQ fa els (and not without reason that to have invented means to benefit afflicted, mortals even to subdue the slightest disease, Is to him a greatoc fa lioltythan the riches of a Monte Ohriato, As of our most learned and immortal phyBioians says "Sinse, however, the Great God hath allowed too few upon earth tha mighty privilege of serving their kind tm its benefit, and that only to those who areef earth's best mold, Queis meliore, late finxit praecordiae Titan." iterate, Smitxe antr xt Two Masmaoss. By the author of "John Halifax. Gentleman," "fihristian'a Mistake," Noble Life," "A Lite for a Lite," "Fairy Book," New York: Harper St Eroihers, 1867. Miss Mulock (Mrs. Craik) is well known to American novel readers.

Although for originality and style, she cannot be mentioned with the authors of "Adam Bede" and "Lady Aud ley's Secret" Mrs. Lewes and Mrs. Maxwell, or, as better known, Miss Evans and Miss Braddon her stories are sometimes very interesting and her views of life very just. The present volume consists of two stories relating to marriage. The fir6t of them, entitled "John JJowei'bank's Wife, is declared to be a true story, and as far as the incidents ara concerned, must have been a historical fact in thousands of eases.

We have met the same facts in more than one story published as a fiction. They are briefly these: Two young persons, a generous and noble minded youth and a sensitive, beautilul and true hearted maiden, meeting at the house of mutual friends, fall in love with each otbpr, not the love pf fickleness and flirtation which changes with the changing hour, but that deep sympathy and union of natures which time does not destroy and which becomes a pari of the life and only ends with it. Unfortunately the young lady's father is selfish, money loving and enormously rich. The yor.ng suitor is but a merchant's clerk. The issue may be guessed.

He is metaphorically kicked out.but not until the pair have plighted their troth to many none other and to wait patiently for tbe breaking of the day, or in literal phrase, tbe maiden's one and twentieth birthday. On that clay John Stenhouse promises to come or write and claim her as his own, and meanwhile goes for two years to India. The cunning father suppresses letters, sends his daughter out of the way, and when day after day when the time comes, Stenbouse calls at the house in Great Anne street, bo is refused admittance. Meantime, the poor girl, Eaaily Kendal, is convinced by her craity father that her lover has forsaken her, and is hurried against her will into a marriage with the rich Liverpool merchant and widower, Sir John Boweibonk. iter father dyiDg suddenly, sbo examines his papers at her husband's request.

There she rinds too late a letter bora John Stenhouse, referring to his frequent calls and letters, and then another, withdrawing alto gether in consequence of the information given Lira by old Kendal that his daughter, of her own free choice, is about to become the wife of Sir John Bowerbank. John Stenhouse returns to India and marries, after a tim3, a penniless widow, with three children, her husband having lost his life in the Indian Mutiny. It was a marriage, not of love, but of circumstances, for John was the only protector the poor creature had during those dreadful days of blood. Emily, (Lady Bowerbank) slowly pines and dies. She tells her husband all, and with his consent, has an interview with John Stenhouse.

The scene is too painful to dwell upon, although Emily, as the great tranquility of death approaches, is calm and self possessed. Nevertheless, two lives have been marred and cno destroyed by the wicked father, who slumbers in the dust. Vary truly does the author say: "Peonledonot recognizehalf clearly enough tho truth that Gorl would not have created such a thing as mutual love, endiDg in mar liage, had He uot meant it to be tbe one thing needful not absolutely to tho falvation of a human soul, though ic is that, or the conirary, oftener than we suspect, but to it perfec: development, and above all, to its happiness. Those who intejfere with What is called a "love affair" are doing what they can never undo;" dest'oying what it is impossible to rebuild; taking away from two human beings that which no substitute, be it family affection, wealth, worldly honor, or success, can avail to restore. All are.

valueless when love is not there. "The sod lay green over Mr. Kendal's bones; his life was over; but he bad blighted two other lives lives which might have blossomed into beauty, and carried their perfectnes9 down into coming generations, when his poor, selfish existence was forgotton in the dust. He had done it, and it never could be undone." The second story is written with far greater power, and is replete with far deeper interest. It is full of such pathos as we need, living'in a hard, cold world, to keep alive our faith in human nature, and to feed with heavenly oil our flickering lamps of charity.

The Rev. William Garland is a College fellow in the University of Cambridge, England. He falls in love with a governess, and after fifteen years of patient waiting for a College living, he marries her. The much loved wife dies in childbirth at the expiration of a year. The good man's life is now centered in the son she leaves him.

In due time Keith Garland al.o goes to Cambridge, but seduces a beautiful but wholly ignorant farm servant, a child of sixteen. He marries her from a sense of honor, leaves his college, and emigrates to Canada. The wife is left behind and finds a home with the sorrowing but forgiving father. Tbe scene between the old man and his son, when he finds the marriage has actually taken place, in the college rooms of the latter, is true to nature and beautifully told. "I am not a coward, father," cried Keith, starti, and pacii vehemently the room the a.mbbj but cheer, little rooiu wttb all its booka strewn about it ite heterogeneous oddities und delicious unHdinMY yet such a room na a man remembers all his lite with tenderness Delonging to his hardworkiuc, hoDeiiil happy college dajs.

She minks of nobody but you or perhaps of me a little, sometimes. She is the most unselflsh woman I ever know except one. And io think that Bho had hidden this secret in her heart all those weeks, and kept telling me you were sure to come home, when she expected to lose von as Rnnn ni avpt you came lose you that 1 might gain you 1 My poor little daughter!" iveiin looked amazed. "Yea; she is my dauahler; she has bocome such to me. and such she will always remain, Keith," added the old man, solemn "however you may act toward your wile.

I know how I shall act toward my daughter." "What do yon niran, lather?" "I mean that though I took her into my bouse out of pure duty, she has grown to be the greatest blessing in it, and she jhall never leave it, unless she leaves it for yours. Will you hear how things came about? Then Mr. Garland began and told his son, from beginning to end, what be had written in the letters which Keith never received tbe history of bimsell and Charlotte. Just the bare history: not dwellinc, as indeed he was loi nteiy to awoii, ior in niB great humility he scarcely paw it himself, on the one fact, the root of all, that it had been this simple doing of a parent's duty under sharpest pain, which brought about the whole." And then comes the meeting of husband and wife he asking her forgiveness and she subbing on his breast. The poor girl is made happy at last; her "heaviness" having endured "for a night," "joy" has come to her "in the morning." There are many such youthful follies and imprudent marriages as Keith Garland'swould that they could all issue, as his did, in solid happiness and peace Peieck's Patent Slate Subface, 427, Nobth llth.Sreet, Philadelphia.

We have received a specimen of these slates from Mr. It. M. Whiting, 37 Fulton street. Brooklyn.

They possets many advantages over the old fashioned, fragile slate. They can be written on and the writing effaced with the same facility as the old slate; but there is no danger of breaking them. They never become glossy, they improve by use, never crack, are not softened by washing or affected by changes of heat and cold. They are useful both for counting houses and schools. Mr.
