D. Butler Pratt of Beecher Memorial Church Will Leave Brooklyn October 1. The Rev. D. Butler Pratt, who about ten days ago received a call to the pastorate of Faith Church, Springfield, will accept.

He read his letter ol resignation to the people of Beecher Memorial Congregational Church on Sunday morning, which Is as follows: Brooklyn, N. September 2. 1900. To the members of Beecher Memorial Congregational Church: My dear people It li with deep and conflicting emotions that 1 hereby tender you my resignation as your pastor, to take effect October 1, 1900. These years of common service and struggle, of mutual Joy and sorrow and success, have united our hearts In the strongest and dearest tics of earth ties which will unite us all, 1 trust.

In heaven. I thank you for your loyalty and love and pray that God may soon send unother pastor to you, for whom 1 bespeak the same charity and support which you have given me. Jlv reasons for severing this sacred relation of pastor and people arise from no discouragement In our work or lack of faith in the future of Beecher Memorial. Through the years of struggle 1 have remained with you until now the church is self supporting and rapidly growing. I shall always have continued interest in the welfare and spiritual growth of tlds church and community where my whole life as a minister has thus far been spent.

God bless and prosper you In all things individually and as a church is the prayer of your friend and pastor, D. 13. PRATT. A meeting of the church wi.ll be held on Friday night to accept Mr. Pratt's resignation and to arrange for his dismission by a council.

Much regret is expressed at Mr. Pratt's resignation. THE ARMY CANTEEN. To the Editor of the Brooklyn Eagle: Might not the following, taken from "Chemistry of Common Help." by James F. W.

Johnson, M. F. R. In 2 William Blackwood Sons, Edinburgh and Loudon, 1S54, vol. 2, p.

26, be used as an Army canteen? It is interesting to observe how men carry with them their early tastes, to whatever new climate or region they go. The love of beer and hops has been planted by Englishmen in America. It has accompanied t'nom to their new coullnes in Australia, Now Zealand and the Cape. In the hot East tfceir home task remains unquenched and the pale face of England follows them to remotest India. Who can tell to what extent the vse of the hop may become naturalized, through their means, in those far off regions? Iuoc ulated into this milder influence, may lot the devotees of opium and the intoxicating hemp be induced hereafter to abandon their hereditary drugs and to substitute tho foreign hop in its place.

From such a jhtngo ir. one article of general consumption row great a change In the character and habits of the people might we not anticipate? B. B. Brooklyn. September 3, 1900.
