Saranac Lake, July 27 Summer guests are coming to the Adirondack Mountains from nearly all the great cities with a rush which resembles the opening days of August, and the records of almost all the large hotels and countless smaller ones are running far ahead of corresponding dates last year.

The outlook for the month of August fs purely a matter of accommodating as large a portion as possible of the applications already in hand, and that month will bring greater crowds here than have ever before been received. As a rule, the competitions among the various hotels are not begun until the heavy crowds of August demand them, but this season the order is changed, and already the dates are fixed and arrangements being made for competitive play on the various golf links, tennis coiiTts and base ball dlamondD of the mountain land, while socially the series of hops and afterncon parties which always make up a good proportion of the interest among the younger set has already begun. NOTES. The Robert Hoe camp over fit Paul Smith's, on the St. ReslB chain of lakea.

which was partially destroyed by Are a few days ago, will be rebuilt at once. The ball at Paul Smith's on Saturday evening was a Kreat, micceaB, all the young people at the hotel being present. The music by the orchestra was especially praised. The first meeting of the directors and officers of the St. Refflfi Yacht Club was held on last Monday.

The course has been" laid out and the rejrattas will be nailed in accordance with the ntrict yachting rules. The present membership of the club is about Keventy flve. Hobert Stewart has a new thirty two foot boat. This class now numbers seven In all. It looks as though there would bo a large number of catboats added this year, but the exact number cannot be told until the entries are made.

J. H. Roosevelt has entered his new boat, the Elfmere. The course is a nine mile triangular one on the upper St. Reels.

The regular races will begin this week and will be for two silver In addition to the twenty launches already on the lake Lewis S. Thompson of Red Bank, N. has added a modern boat, which recently' arrived. Mrs. J.

The Hotel Wawbeek, on the western shore of the Upper Saranac Iake, Is rapidly filling up. Many of the old patrons of the house are back again as well as scores of new ones. Beside the coif links, which attract many of the guests every day, the new tennis court, built this year, is immensely popular. The Wawbeek still holds its record for fishing and many parties may be found almost every day angling: for the speckled beauties. Among the most persistent in W.

A string of trout may be caught at any time. The trout In Lake MaBsawopie are marked brilliantly. They bite soon after the hook Is dropped into the water nnd furnish plenty of excitement before they' are landed. Lake Massaweple and the surrounding waters have long been famous for their fine fishing and this year they are more than keeping up their. reputntion.

Dr. William Ho wo Morrison, who Is spending the summer at Childwold. Is enthusiastic about the many advantages of the park. He says that the altitude is Just right, neither too high nor too low, and that the nourishment and care given by Mr. Leland are just what is required to build up the constitution during tho summer to stand the wci; and tenr of the rest of the year.

The breeze that blows across Lake Massawepie is worth coming a long distance, to breathe. There Is a beautiful little island In Lake Massawepie which has been greatry improved and beautified. Camp Isola Is located upon It. This Island is tho summer heme" of Mr. C.

D. Tows. Great taste has been, exercised both in exterior architecture nnd in Interior finishing. The open tea room and cofive navlllon, together with the music, dining and l'viig rooms of the larger buildings, are special ff atures. All the Is rustic in design, hnving been made on the island.

The numerous owls, loor.s, foxes, deers" heads, which add so materially to the interior decoration, were shot, fcr the most part. In Childwold The card room in Mr. Tow's cottage, near the hotel. Is decorated with different designs worked out with cards. About one hundred gross have been used.

One of the fircst vegptnble gardens to be found in the state of Xew York is the une on the Island Isola. under the Fpecial enre of Mr. Tows, who devotes a gieat deal nf time nnd attention to this garden, which Is his especial pride. The ball ground Is near the hotel, as are also the golf links and tennis pround. The CaFino, where the dances are is a regular Adirondack Mountain structure, covered with bark from the big hemlock trees.

The howling alley and pool room ar? just a step further on. Tho large library in the hotel office, where may be found the latest hooks, as well as the standard works, is well patronized. Narragansett Pier. R. July 27 Xarra gansett is almost ready for the biggest sporting everjt of the year, the polo tournament of the Point Judith Country Club, which begins Monday and lasts until August 12. There will be three days during the period devoted to rest for the players. Society has suddenly become active within a week, owing to the new scheme being tried at the Point Judith Club ot table d'hote dinners.

These have proved so successful Jthat they will be continued indefinitely Thursday evenings. Automobiles continue to furnish excitement, particularly that of George H. Bal lentine of Xew York. No sooner did the town pasB an ordinance, particularly directed against his machine, than he went over the line to race. There he soon succeeded in getting himself arrested.

More ordinances are in order. The excursion business, especially Sunday, is very large, thousands being brought In by the popular Sea View electrics and Wirkford steamer. Belles are noticeably lacking, but bathing is prime. NOTES. Judging from the rapid sale this week of carriage spaces at the polo field, society will be out in force for those events.

For the Narragansett cups. Bryn Mawr. Westchester. Point Judith. I'hlladelphln Country Club and Myopia are entered for tnc Point Judith cups.

Myopia. Philadelphia Country Club. Point Judith and Bryn Mawr for the Rhode Island cups. Philadelphia Country Club. Point Judith and Drvn Mawr Collier will take the place oil the Point Judith team of his father, who recently broke his collar bone.

Lansburch. Mr. HE season is now at its height and reports only ot crowded hotels and fruitless applications for rooms come from all of the summer places. Along the coast yachilng is now in full swing. In the interior count less golf tournaments are being played off.

The cold snap of the past week was felt in more than one resort, with the result that the hotel proprietors had to meet sudden and imperative demands for more for the beds but there was no diminution In the crowds, despite the cooler weather. FETE DAVWP0RT. After Three Years the Celebration Has Been Established Again Compliment to U. S. Navy and New York Yacht Club.

Newport, R. July 27 For the next three days every road leads to Newport, for on Tuesday comes fete day, complimentary to the North Atlantic squadron and the New York Yacht Club. throe years fete day has been omitted, so It comes with new zest. Nearly has been collected by subscription for the illumination and marine and land parades, which promise to break all records, while the cottage colony will enter tain lavishly. As one quarter of the people attracted cannot be provided for here, it has been arranged to keep the electric cars, steam roads and steamboats running all night.

The week has been lull of disagreeable temperatures and excitement. The striking of a shell from a battleship against the city hall, the mysterious robbery at Royal Phelps Carroll's, the general violation ot the automobile racing law. the bursting of the big water tank at Jamestown, the tardy move of the police commissioners in closing notorious resorts, the deluge of Newport garbage thrown in by the tide on tho Jamestown bathing beach, the lightning stroke that divided itself between three summer visitors at Conan icut, the upset of the patent medicine quadrille planned by Mrs. Oliver Belmont, the broad daylight firing of a fisherman's house on the cliffs, and the loss by overturning In the bay during a thunder squall of a boatload of silverware used at a picnic were only a few of the disturbances. NOTES.

The scclety weddlni; of the season ts due today, when Miss. Kjiia Kuok. daugnter of Mrs. Edward Francis Rook. Is to become Mrs.

J. Nell son Howard. The ceremony at the Charles villa on Olilf avenue will be ioilowed by a large reception on the lawn, with music and a bridal lunch. About thirty of Mr. Howard' friends nave him a bachelor dinner Saturday at the Clambake Club.

One of the things the quartet sang was 'She Was Happy Till She Met You." The part of Mrs. Stuyvesant Fish's professional variety show at CroFSWays. Friday evening, was its surroundings. Most of the performers can be seen anywhere la the winter by paying a quarter. Jamestown is ereatly interested in the lawn fete for the benefit of t.

Matthew's Church, which is to be given next "Wednesday afternoon: also In the commodore' regatta of the Conanlcut Yacht Club, due early in August. The promoter.1 of the golf club at Jamestown want an appropriation from the town on the ground that the organization is a public benefit. An automobile pnrnde and ail ntitbmoblle road nice to Xew York are on the tapis. Tile ItelL'ian legation Is about to locate here lor August. Tiin Mount Brercl 1 Society Dons a Bathing Suit at the Popular Maine Resort Which Is Becoming Lively on the Beach. Bar Harbor, July 27 Bar Harbor has become a watering place. Heretofore it has been a Bummer resort, but suddenly, after years of trepidation, society dons a bathing suit and goes in to swim. For years yacht ing has been one of the great pastimes of the resort, but, owing to tha extreme coldness of the water, bathing has been disdained.

Some one has suggested that the water, after all, isn't cold, and immediately bithing suits are at a premium and bathing parties are the fad. If it is a bright, sunshiny morning, one may now see a strange spectacle for Bar Harbor. Scores of summery looking people are plunging merrily and gayly from the many floats along the shore above the bar. It is a most important innovation and will be the means of hurrying to completion tho idea of a swimming pool at the resort. Some of those who are giving bathing parties are Mrs.
