But it was maintained that froSt would help the development of the late cotton, so that It would not be an entirely evil thing for the cotton plant. Nevertheless, it is probable that If there should be a frost in any part of the belt prices would advance somewhat on general principles. But the bulls were not at all aggressive this morning. On the other hand, the bears were making moderate ventures, co that there were no very large trades. Price fluctuations were largely nominal and activity In the trading was confined to a few issues. There was small bidding for stocks and offerings were also restricted in volume. The curb market continued rather quiet, but fairly steady throughout the later session. Brokers reported a general holding off of customers until after election, and with new orders very scarce. Final prices for the day while somewhat Irregular show general, steadiness, while total transactions were estimated as between three and four thousand shares.

Amalgamated Copper was a weak feature of the curb to day and sold down to 90 'J In the early session. Jere was a further falling of specula I interest, and activity manifested in to j'B stock market and transactions were In jialler volume and more distinctly professional than in any recent full day session. yThere was also more of the quiet liquidation of long stock, that has been a characteristic of the pro election speculation and the professional element took no decided stand on either side of the market. In consequence dealings were decidedly irregular, but for the moat part the upward tendency was most pronounced as a result of short covering of recent sales. There were few new developments of moment, although the monetary conditions continue to work toward further ease here, while discounts abroad show signs of further hardening in the effort to prevent further gold importations to this side. London traded but nominally here and most of the day's irregular changes, although these were gains for the most part, were due to the technical trading conditions and were generally confined to small limits.

92 10th 23d St 88 1st is.lOm Union Ferry 32 Union Ferry 5s 95 9J6 OUST SOX list generally, Lmioii Pacific, after opening firm, also lost sharply. The tractions, under the lead of Rapid Transit, opened firm, but later suffered reactions. The Reading issues were also rather heavy. Dealings after the first hour became more irregular and even more distinctly professional in character. There were no new developments of note to influence speculative sentiment but the market showed the recent tendency toward conservatism now that the election Is near at hand.

Cables from London reported dull and generally heavy markets at that center. The monetary situation and the tendency toward higher discounts was an adverse influence, while consols and investment securfties were weak on the reported illness of Queen Victoria. American Issues were fairly 1 steady and showed early fractional gains as compared with York parity. Arbitrage houses dealt in comparatively small voiume 1n thi3 market and on both sides of the ac count. The principal sales were of Northern Pacific, while the buying was scattered.

On balance London business was estimated to have come out about even for the day. The market was dull and almost featureless during the midday session, although in the afternoon there was a general improvement in the tone of speculation and prices showed better strength. Sugar Refining led the Vitrternoon rally and was bid up rather smartly on the shorts, catching many stop orders. A rally of several points was made that gave stimulus to the entire list. Tobacco also improved and made a fractional gain.

Tennessee Coal showed continued strength due to Its over solid condition and the desire of shorts to cover. The other Steel stocks showed improvement of fractions while Tin Plate was heavy under heavy realizing sales from a bull interest that was recently active In bidding up this issue. Rapid Transit also developed strength and led the tractions in a general advance. There was bull manipulation in Transit which was attributed to the Consoli dated interest that has been active in speculating In this issue. It made a smart rally well over a point while Metropolitan on re ported inside buying also gained.

Manhattan was rather heavy, but its decline was kept In small limits. Northern Pacific was by far the most active issue of the rails and, after the London selling stopped, it recoiled smartly and showed a small gain and with some good local buying, said to be for Morgan interest Union Pacific was fairly active and 303,938 rhlrd week October 3S.329 34 079 From January 1 l.OSo'449 n.S SCOTT AND MEMPHIS; Third week October 121.531 1:2.376 Irom January 1 4.133.911 3.605!s3Cr OMAHA: SH 05 05 21)6 t4 a ex 17 Miscellaneous Diamond Steel Electric Storage Electric Storage pf Electric of America Horse Collar Insurance of N. It is expected that changes In the voting trust will soon be made to throw the whole power into the hands of the present owners. A Chicago dispatch says that the checka paid bv Mr.

Gates to the syndicate for control of the Kansas Southern were returned and destroyed and a new deal by which the Harriman syndicate became a purchaser Instead of a seller was arranged. The purchase of the road by the new owners removes from the Altbn's field a line that might easily become a serious disturber of rates and make a deep cut into the profits of the older lines. There will be no new. plan of reorganization of the property. The owners will proceed on the lines of the original reorganization.

The Alton will have nothing to do with the deal as a corporation and will guarantee no securities. There is a certain feeling in commission house circles that it is not fair to expect brokers to provide 90 per cent, of the money needed to carry customers over the election when the customers put up only 10 per cent. The money market to day was without Important change, although the tendency continues to be toward further ease. This is largely a reflection of the smaller demand for funds, a natural result of the recently dwindling volume of speculation. Receipts of money from various sources has aided the Improvement and also the facts that gold arrivals to about five millions will be on hand this week' while the sub treasury will also pay out about $5,000,000 this week, mostly representing bond Interest. There are no deposits of money at the sub treasury for shipment to the interior and the direct shipments by the banks are said to be on a comparatively very small scale. All these developments point to further ease, and a marked decline in rateB is expected after election.

Call rates to day wore easier and ranged at 23V4 per cent. Time money Is easier, with rates quoted at 5 per cent, for two months and 4a5 per cent, for three, four, five and six months. The loss of the broker carrying him would be Indefinite. It is reasonable, therefore, that a spirit of conservatism should prevail to some extent on the eve of the national voting. Some observers contend that a quiet speculation would be far preferable to an extravagant one in the current week. Better results, It Is argued, might be obtained from the market In case the election goes right, as it is believed it will do, If over enthusiasm is now put under some restraint. The outside public and the large operators, If they rcallr.c profits which aro In sight, will be stronger to meet nny unexpected reverse or to take advantage of the business improvement which Is linked in common opinion with the victory of sound money and sane politics.
