The. trade in wheat was active, this morning at times followed by periods of waiting. Thero was a rush to sell at the opening, owing to disappointing cables, and the fact that foreign houses were liberal sellers. There was clso some re selllng of cash wheat and some reports of cancellations of freights. The foreign markets opened up on the American news, but lost the advance, which, with the foreign sales was considered a good indication of the way Europe looked upon the speculative advance in America.

The break in the market at the opening was about 1 to Hie, partially recovered later. The movement was very largely a speculative reaction. The market is very nervous, moving quickly on rather moderate orders. The minute prices turn strong tho traders all stampede to cover their shorts and get in, with equally anxious efforts to get out when it looks J5.462.055.48 LIABILITIES. The of pork, bacon, hams and lard from the principal Atlantic seaboard ports for the week ending December 7. 1901, and the countries to which shipments were made were as follows: 1 3 weak. Receipts were large in the Northwest, about 1,100 cars, and were about double last year.

There appears to be no let up in the general movement of the crop, and there appears likelihood of further rapid increase in the visible supply. The advance has been to a very large extent speculative, and the situation is governed more by the orders from time to time than by the actual information regarding the supplies. Receipts at Buffalo to day were very large, a little more than 2,000,000 bushels off the lakes. Wheat was nervous and irregular in the afternoon with several good attempts to rally, but there was a lack of bull enthusiasm and prices were very weak in the late dealings with active selling. The close was at about' the lowest.

Exporters took 3 loads. mere was a rapid break in corn at tne opening of 1 to lc per bushel, then a steadier feeling, but there was quite a rush to sell, and there has been within the last two days a big line of long corn put on the market. The sales have been fairly well taken, but the offerings have rather taken the nerve out of the longs. Receipts are large at the West, although it is claimed that these receipts are to an important extent duplication of stuff previously reported. Prices are so high, however, that there is evidently great economy In the consumption of corn.

Corn was very steady in the afternoon, but turned weak toward the close declining easily and closed with prices at about the lowest. Exporters too 4 loads. The market for oats was weak and lower, breaking about lc per bushel in the early dealings, with further effort to sell long stuff. It Is claimed that there are Important lines of long oats which have been put on the market and that Patten has converted quite an amount of paper profits into cash. The movement continues liberal at Western points, fully equal to last year.

Oats were very steady at midday, hut turned weak late, with wheat and corn, and closed at about the lowest. The trade In hog products was fairly active, the market opening off with grain; then rallied and advanced rather easily on the firmness of the live hog market. Provisions were very steady at midday, but later were quiet, and easy at the close. FUTURE MARKETS AT NEW YORK. (Reported by L.
