News came yesterday that on Chicago day, October 9, the exhibition will be free of debt. That is all running expenses, the remainder of the bonds, floating and other debt, will have been cleared. One of the daughters of Dr. Charles A. Briggs has entered the Episcopal school for the training of deaconesses in the city of New York. Tho school was established by Grace church in 1800, and its sessions are held in Grace house. It was organized under the canon of deaconesses adopted by the general convention in 1889, which follows: 1.

Unmarried women of dovout chnracter and proved fitness may bo appointed to the office of deaconess by any bishop of this church. 2. The duty of a deaconess is to assist the minister in the care of the poor and sick, the religions training of the young and others and tho work of moral reformation. No diploma will be given by the school to a woman who is not a member of the Episcopal church. This fact has led many people to wonder whether Miss Briggs proposed to leave the Presbyterian church, it being supposed that she would take no such step without the sanction of her father.

Dr. Briggs' opponents have already oharged him with heresy, and there is in this new incident, in their minds, the possibility of a charge of countenancing apostacy. But it is not necessary to make a great matter out of a small one. Miss Briggs enters the school as a special student and will not receive a diploma. It is probable that she wants the instruction which this school can give her in preparation for the kindly and gracious work mentioned in the passage from the canon just quoted.

The Episcopal school was the most available one and she decided to go there. Dr. Briggs himself and many others with him believe that all Protestant denominations should have similar schools for the training of women, for religious work. The Catholic church has its sisterhoods, but Protestantism has practically notbing of the kind. While Dr.

Briggs wants the Presbyterians to adopt a more modern theology, he also wants them to adopt, with Protestant modifications, some of the old fashioned practices of the Catholic church. tressing. Thoughtful and experienced citizens will not underrate the movement for municipal reform represented by the new committee of 100. A glance at the list of names identified with the enterprise is sufficient to convince any intelligent reader that it may become very formidable. To sneer at the leaders of the project, to call them mugwumps and self constituted reformers, will not lessen their influence or compromise their standing as men in this community. What they are undertaking is plainly within the limits of manly prerogative. They believe sincerely that the municipal government needs improvement.

That may bo the Parisian view and we way to these halcyons was through the drama and his hair. He engaged the somewhat dramatist, Ned Buntlino, to write a play. The order was filled in six hours.

When the piece was produced, the critics fell to wondering what Mr. Buntline had been doing with his time, and somehow the tragedy did not succeed. Perhaps Mr. Hammerstein's opera, composed in forty eight hours, under stress of calls and hand organs, will not be the same kind of a success as "Die Goetterdaemmer ung," but the ballet may save it, and he holds the advantage over other composers in having two theaters where ho can produco it. He put iu one section of the charter a provision that the company might also engage in the East India trade and tho banking business. Tho new company dug a well in Heade street and started a bank. The well is still open and the company is still ready to fulfill the conditions of its charter. When A. T.

There is a reservoir on the laud and a pump. I New Vork, Desbrosses st Pier 8:40 New Yoric, West 22d st Pi Democracy is growing cannot be doubted by anyone who has given reasonable attention to prevailing local conditious. All thestrengtli that the organization can bring to bear will be required to prevent defeat.

A harmonious union of Republicans and independent Democrats, on a capable and aggressive nominee, would leave the result in doubt until the polls were closed. Although the city is normally Democratic partisan considerations cannot be depended on invariably to hold voters in line. The opponents of "Willoughby street'' havo often elected their candidates when they least expected it. They never elected anyone, Jowever, unless they succeeded in winning over or diverting a considerable portion of tho Democratic rote. That they can do this year only by placing in nomination an independent Democrat.

Non partisanship, to be effective, must not bo all on one side. Tho Democrats who assisted in tho choice of Mr. Low wero willing to sacrifice their partisan convictions for the time being; but they would not be averse to little reciprocal treatment from their Republican colaborers. John Jacob Astor was not happy yosterday when he learned that his pleasure boat, tho Nourmahal, had struckthe Now Hamburg reef in the Hud sou river, and hud been beached to prevent the water which rushed into her hold from sinking her.

He intended to come to New York in her to day from his country place at Rhinobeck. Instead ho must superintend the work of getting her off tho beach and started for the dry dock at the Erie basin for repairs. He must also find a now captain and second officer, for he discharged these two men as soon as he reached the yacht after the accident. Thoy blundered, and ho does not want to run the risk of a similar mistake while he is on boord. The accident happened because the second officer mistook the light on a pier for the light on a vessel, and he attompted to sail around it.

To accomplish this it would have been necessary for him to take the yacht across the Hudson river railroad tracks.
