Here, however, they were met by orders from headquarters compelling hem ret urn. hieh were i Mied, doubtless, in eonseiiier.ce of the information which been received that tlie I'ebel cavalry, in imnienr force, were concent rating in vicinity of iccoqtmn. Said information afterwards proving to he erroneous ns to the extent of the concentration, thisorder to return was. under the circumstances, exceedingly annoying, not only to the General, but lo Ids entire command, from the fact that at that time they had just succeeded in getting in the rear of some five hundred rebel cavalry, under the command of the notorious Stuart, and were on the point of giving Ihein chase, and either capturing thein or driving them towards the Potomac when this unfortunate recall reached them.

Like true soldiers as they are thsy promptly obeyed, returning to a point some eight miles hack of us. where they remained encamped until yesterday. I Hiring their tour they, upon I wo or three occasions, got a sight of another similar body of cavalry, sent out from General Nigel's Division, lliis latter body having made a dash into Warrenton during the morning of the day offieneral Averill's arrival, and succeeded in driving from there what they did not capture, all thestray rebel there collected. As an evidence of the audacity and darhijr of these rebels, we would mention that during this same morning the enlirc hod above mentioned, under Stuart, passed between tho command under Gen. General Averill, and the one sent out by Sigel.

and iu a direction not towards heir own lines, but towards the l'oteniac. this being the party who would liiive been followed, if not actually caught up with, were it not that, in obedience to orders, they returned. Another evidence of rebel a told us. war that they succeeded in enplurhng one of General AverillV orderlies, while he was pa. sing from the advance guard 'to the inuiii body.

After stripping him of everything of value they released him. Nothing of importance transpired during this tour, they no! being permitted to reach tlie point where work was to be done. Had they been allowed to proceed, as originally intended, much damage would certainly have been done to the i.ebels' sources of supplies, as they were abundantly prepared to blow up and burn down any description of property (especially railroad) which is now. or may be hi future, serviceable to the minions of Jetfer son Davis, Wa fancy that this cavalry expedition was intended to have co operated with the reeonnoissance which was arranged for. nnd to he under command of General Hooker, when the order for that was countermanded.

There was good and sufficient reasons why this should not proceed. TJ1K JSAI.I.OON. Jaih" observations are being1 made by this now indispensable arm of the service. Last eyening, shortly after nine o'clock, flames were discovered issuing from the premises at the foot of Harrison street, South Brooklyn, occupied by Messrs. Turnbull McBain as luuibe" yard. The origin of tie fire is unknown, and the proprietors had only left the premises a shor" lime before the occurrence; so the supposition is that it was the work of an incendiary. The llame spread rapidly and soon enveloped the establishment, and before the tire department of the district had readied the vicinity, it had made much headway. Hose No.

9 was the first to get stream on, and through their and other companies' assistance, the tlames were mastered, and portion of the lumber was saved. Upon examination of the premises, the tire was discovered to have originated in a wooden shed in Columhi i street, and from thence extended to the huge pile of timber in the rear. The amount of lumber in the yard was estimated at about .550,000, which about 810,000 worth was consumed. The same establishment was considerably damaged last June by a destructive lire, but which, through the exertions of the firemen, was quick ly put out. Since that time the proprietors have been very vigilant in guarding against a similar occurrence, and the above, that the Jirc last night was the work of an incendiary, seems verified by the fact that no combustible materials of any description were found neu'1 where the lire originated.

The property was in. sured in the Phoenix, Fireman's, Trust, Exeel sior, Montauk, AYMliamsburg City, Rutgers and several other insurance companies in this city and New York, An alarm about a o'clock this morning originated from the same fire.
