The Volunteer Movement. The cold snap of yesterday and to day seemed to have added an additional incentive to volunteers, and yesterday afternoon and this morning recuiting was quite brisk, the greater part of the volunteers, however, being veterans from th field. The Bounty Committee expected to be able to enroll about 200 of the Second Firo Zouaves, but as yet the men have not made their appearance, and it probable that ere this they have been gobbled up by tho Hew York authorities. Heart Disease. On Sunday evening last, Mrs.

While returning from church in the evening, she complained of feeling sick, and on arriving at her residence, about 10 o'lock, she died." The Coroner was not notified as he should have been, nor was any inquest held. The Immortal alego ry of Bunyan illustrated upon canvass, which Is now on exhibition at the Polytechnic Instituto, is a triumph of artistic ekill worthy of tho age in which we live. It is, without exception, the most magnificent series. of pictures ever exhibited In panoramic form in tbtB city. The The sublime conceptions of the dreamer, which are so striking to the Intelligent mind, are brought out heboid relief before the eye, and invested with a material' existence. Wo would remind our lady readers of the afternoon exhibition to morrow at 3 o'clock.

The tableuax are also exhibited every evening at a quarter beforo eight. Tnr Artists' Reception To xionT. The splendid exhibition of paintings, statuary, arranged under the auspices of tho Art Committee, will be open to the publlo lo night for the benefit of the Sanitary Fund. This collection of paintings is the most valuable ever placed on exhibition in tlrs city, and inciudos many gems of art raroly, if ever seen, out of tho galleries of their owners. Among then is the full length portrait of Washington taken from life by Stuart, also a master piece of portrait painting by the same artist, tho likeness being one of the Luqueer family of this city Another fine portrait is that of Mr.

Pierepont's mthor, by John Inman. There is a'so a fine portrait or Col Trumbull, Washington's aid de aair.ji, takea from life. Tho gem of the collection Is, however, a painting by Baron Wappar, the Confidante. Th's is truly a masterpiece art. Its beauty of ooloiing, elaborateness of finish beautiful effect of light and Bhade, and the exquisite drapery of the flgureB, and the expressive character of the cauntenanccs, are such as to at once strike the ev0 alike of the amateur and connolBseur.

Another fine picture is the one by Rubbles." The working up of this picturo is truly artistic. Near by is one of Easimau Johnson's finest productions, which tellB the story of onr Old Kentucky Home," as if photographed by Williamson. A series of three p'ctures illustrative of the life of a young German student, is an excellent conception admirably can led ont. The Becond scene of the series, in which the Student is undergoing an examinations at tho hands of tho Collegiate Judges presents a series of portraits showing great individuality of character. In the Landscape department we have two splendid pictures by Glgnonx his winter vlow of Niagara at bunrise" being one of his most successful efforts.

But wo will not allude further to tho collection to day; surtke It to say tbat it Is tho most superb exhibition of rngs ever seen in this city. Tickets oan be procured at the box office of tho Academy, and the probabilities are that a gathering of the lovers of Art unequalled in the annals of Brooklyn receptions will bo seen on this occasion. Diseolving A Partnership. The clothing business has been carried on at 27 Hamilton avenue, by Lewis Slotting up to Monday night. Co. not being entirely satisfied with the way things were going, concluded to dissolve partnership and secure himself. During Monday night, under tho cover or darkness, he removed the entire stock of clothing, cloths, cassimeres, neck ties and suspenders, valued at $S50.

Mr. Slotting was naturally ssreewhat astonished the next morning when he discovered thlB sweeping transaction, and he went to see the Police about it. From enquiry he learned tbat the goods bad been taken to the house of a Mr. Herbert, at Ml Columbia street. A search warrant was obtained and placed In the hands of officer Wilson, of the 48d, who searched tho premises yesterday afternoon and found about a dozen boxes of suspenders and neckties, worth about $S0.

The rest of tho property could not be found. Co. is rum est inventus, so is Mr. Herbert. Christie Burns on his Muscle.

Christie Burns Is occupying the attention of the Police Court again. MlBfortunes, which come not singly, are accumulating on the festive ChrlBtie, and from the lofty character of a plaintiff in Court, he sunk to that of defendant. We chronicled his Inglorious failure as a morel reformer, and now we have to record that In tho role of a public officer seeking to bring Justice to a delinquent little darkey, Christie has again come to grief. Christie, be it understood, is a deputy sheriff by virtue of a warrant with a green Beal about the size of a buckwheat pancake, which Christie can never look upon without emotion, and feeling what a big thing it is to be a public officer in a free country. Christie was walking down Washington street tho other day, meditating on the responsibilities of his position, when right before him there ran a sportive little darkey of five summer, whose genealogy had evidently fjone through a few stages of the process of "miscegenation," which had subdued the rich African tint to a mild cream color.

This miscegenation and mischievous youth picked up a pebble from the highway and cast It from him, and a window being In the line of its orbit, the fragile glass was shivered in the collision. Breaking windows is not in accordance with low, and throwing stones is a direct vlo laiion of an ordinance of the city. Christie, as an officer of the law, felt called upon to discharge his duty, and be incontinently seized the small but destructive contraband by the back of his neck and held him as a hostage for the damages, in spite of his kicking and yelling, which brought out all the boys, dogs and unoccupied women in the neighborhood to see what was the matter, and finally came the anxious mother to the wretched little darkey. After a eood deal of talk, the anxious and indignant maternal contraband ransomed her offspring from Christie's clutches by paying the demandsof the glazier for repairing the window. But to have satisfaction, she made a complaint beforo Justice Perry against Christie for assault and battery.

The woman's name is Mrs. Margaret Hooper, and she lives at 102 Washington street. The case was partially examined yesterday morning, and was further adjourned to Thursday. The Great Fait.
