In large hats one of the handsomest modeUs was of Leghorn with crown trimming; of maiden hair fern and orchids brought, high toward the back with long ti strings of point applique lace and rosettes of violet utffeta ribbon under brim at the back. A soft shade of cerise In straw was very effectively trimmed with white mous seline de soie appliqued with black Chantilly lace, large osprcy ami knots of black and whit ribbon at. the back. A round hat, in lilac colored straw was covered with clusters of shaded lilacs and foliage and a very dressy Little toque combined turquoise velvet and light tint i of burnt orange with trimming of small ostrich feathers. A very handsome white chip with deep roll at sides showed trimming of long black and white plumes and fuil crown of white mousseline de soie lace appliqued black. SPRING AT ST. AUGUSTINE. The Southern Resort Must Be Very Gay Just Now by All Accounts. To the Editor or the Brooklyn Eagle: St. Augustine is very gay in March.

Indoors and outdoors there is a continued round of gayety ami sport. The days of warm sunshine are fragrant with the budding of spring blossoms, added to the jasmine and the rose, loading the atmosphere with perfume, while the nights bring dances, receptions, concerts and varied entertainments such as are familiar lo rhe summer resorter of Newport, or the Springs. There is plemy of life at all Florida resorts. 1ml to Augustine alone is accorded the distinction of being "the gay city." Among the wealth of diversions, the mora popular are probably embraced in the pleasures of tlie St. Augustine Country Club, a feature new this season.

The club has acquired a line tract of land adjacent to the city, of about ten minutes' easy access from the hotels. A thirty live acre meadow land, forming a part of the club property, has been ((inverted into tt gulf course of nine lioies, with teasing blinkers and some good natural water hazards; withal a very good set of links for a well equipped player to make his long drives. The resources of the club have been augmented by the professional skill of a Shinnecock Hills green keeper. Other salient features of the club grounds is the bicycle track (of shelii. one 'hird of a mile around, aud outside of litis circles a half mile pony race track, tints providing the (dement of good sport in variety and abundance.

Tile wiiiicr's guest finds tin1 privileges of the club tit his disposal, and if he lie a golfer tile grounds of the St. Augustine fjolf Club on the lields about the old fort, are also tendered him. Altogether one could ask but for little more of recreation than is lavishly made free to his comfort here. One can ride or wheel over the hard slid 1 roads into the country lanes hereabouts, or drive through the some wliat quaint streets of the old town, as well as the richer avenues of to day: or sail the broad, even Mowing Matanzas. with a line out for the sea bass, and dip in the ocean surf on A tiastasia.

But to exhaust each of these, and the more active sports as weil. is but to find new avenues of diversion at one's il isposal. Another feature of life here is the Casino, which in any great resort is an object of interest always, the point where the morning round is either begun or the afternoon pleasure ended. Xo less popular is the St. Augus rine Casino, with its combination of attractions.

It might be mentioned here that adl 'through Florida the artesian water is of sulphurous quality and one of these wells Is utilized to feed the great swimming pool of the casino, with an invigorating and buoyant flow. The military hand of St. Francis barracks (days daily while the swimmers sport in the nataloriuni. and every evening discourse dreamy dance music. The type of architecture, dominant in the great, buildings about, the Alameda gardens, is modified to that, period of denlga which incorporates the renaissance.

The blended designs startle you and almost shocR tin' artistic sense, but as one pauses und note the graceful lines and delicate tracings, even amid the massive pillats and gorgeous decorations, the eye becomes satisfied and taste is appeased. I may lie pardoned in writing of the St. Augustine hotels, for they are properly reckoned among the show places of Florida and are quite a.s much talked about as many of the natural bc. ni' of the country at large. In an earlier letter the points of In ter.st ami local lore were sufficiently dwelt upon as net to warrant garbing them over in a new dress for thi article.

One who has not seen the palaces of St. Augustine, more especially the Ponce de Leon bus in stoic a real pleasure, for they ore such as to admit of no comparison with any othor private building. acres of land provides the Ponce with Its site; gardens of roses, magnolias and other gorgeous llowi rs from its surroundings; giant palm trees stand about as sctitinals guarding the great great structure of eixiuiiiu iii witii its rich red terra colt a ornamentation: huge towers, graceful turrets, bulging donns, Moorish balconies and Kabl's of tiling arc massed together in bewildering, yet al together harmonious. who. At night its inipressi veriest is accentuated by the electric globes, thousands upon thousands, of all coloiv, illiitnina ing the building, its cuinv, loggias and gardens.
