HAYKES. frius ant) feif MONDAY EVENING, MAY 0. Steam Fire Engine. The Good Intent Engine Co. No.

3, of Brooklyn, E. will give a public exhibition of their Steam Fire Engine in front of the City district, this (Monday) afternoon at 5 o'clock. Tlii is the same engine that was tried so satisfactorily on Tuesday Inst at the pole in the eastern district, of which we spoke in our edition of the 4th instant. Attempted Suicide. Word was sent to the Deputy Superintendents office this morning at fifteen minutes past eleven o'clock that a young lady wearied of existence had invested some small change iulaudunum, and swallowed it.

Deputy Su rlntendent Folk sent two detectives and a hand cart to the corner of Willoughby and Hudson avenues, to take the "pisened" young lady to the Hospital. Sudden Death. Coroner Horton yesterday held an inquest at 25 Gold street, on the body of Mrs. Margaret Bennett, who died very suddenly. She attended church in her usual health yesterday morning, and got home shortly after 12 o'clock and sat down to dinner.

She asked a blessing, and immediately after fell back in her chair and expired in about ten minutes. Verdict, death from disease of the heart. Effects of Liquor. Michal Heavy got a little too heavy yesterday, by taking in too much fluid, and thought he would like to improve the glazing business by smashing windows and raising the price of putty. He tried his hand on the window, corner of Johnson street andHudson avenue, where he sent his list through a pane of glass.

The consequence was that he got badly cut, and bled like a pig, and had to be taken to the Hospital. Fire Marshal's Report. Fire Marshal Belknap has just issued his semi annual report of fires in this city in which he announces the gratifying intelligence that the entire loss by conflagration during the six months ending 1st of May was only $46,238. Those losses were oecasioued by 101 fires, none of which were of great magnitude. There port shows great care and attention in its compilation, and is valuable for reference.

Serious Camphene Accident. A lady named Rankin, residing in Third avenue, near Fourteenth street, was seriously burned on Saturday night by ignition of camphene or burning fluid, with which she was engaged in filling (l lamp while the wick was burning. Her clothes caught fire, and becoming frightened she ran into the street, when she became enveloped in flames. The fire was extinguished by some neighbors, but not before she was badly burned. Fire.

About 12 o'clock Saturday night, some goods in the show window of the dry goods store of Henry Schlism, in Franklin street, near Noble, Greenpoint, caught fire from the gas light. The flames were extinguished by a few pails of water, but not until some $300 damage had been done. The proprietor had but recently moved into the store, and had been too busy to have his policy of insurance transferred; consequently there was no insurance on the property. The Weather. The weather is certainly rushing the season it is warm enough for the dog days.

The anniversary folks who came to town witli overcoats and umbrellas, expecting the customary cold, rainy spell that is supposed to await the Quakers, have had all the starch taken out of their white eho kers quite unexpectedly, and think they must have made a mistakeln the season. White hats, rosebuds, and beer gardens have been prematurely developed, and the early run on the ice crop threatens a scarcity at the latter end of the season. A New Office. The Hack Inspector's office has been opened, and is now in full force and effect in the apartment formerly occupied by the Children's Aid Society in the basement of the City Hall. The Inspectors grant all licenses, thus rc 1 lieving the Mayor, who was formerly incommoded witli the business.

A long row of horses, carts, and junk wagons were in front of the Hall while their owners were inside procuring licenses. MeBsrs. D. F. Jones and Corr, the Inspectors, are assiduous in the performance of their duties, and are also obliging to those who have, business with them.

In addition to granting licenses they attend to all violations of ordinances. Accidentally Drowned. The body of Thomas Dorian was found in the water at the foot of Adams street yesterday morning. It appears that about 1 o'clock the previous night he came to his boarding house, No. 60 Bridge street, and being somewhat under the influence of liquor, the landlord urged him to go to bed.

He wonld not, however, and said he would go to his brother's house, corner of Hudson avenue and Tillary street, and left. It is supposed that he wandered to the dock and accidentally fell overboard. An inquest, was held by Coroner Horton, and a verdict of found drowned was rendered by the jury. The wife of the de diseased died about week previous. Ho leaves no children.

The Pumping Enoine at Ridqkwood. We mi derstaiid that the large engine at the Ridgewood Reservoir was seriously damaged last week, and the portion fractured is now at the manufactory in Hartford for repairs. The accident happened in this wise: as the pump was in motion on an up stroke the rubber packing was displaced; this pre vented the closing of the valve, and consequent failure to draw its accustomed amount of water. which, upon the principle of a battering ram, by its concussion, forced out the bottom head of the large pumping cylinder, thereby bending over thirty large bolts and rendering the pump inopera tive. The necessary repairs are.

to be completed by Wednesday. The donkey engines are at work in the meantime. So much for the change in the contract plan which provided for a Cornish engine Another Police Testimonial. The Police In spectors of this city received a notice last week of a meeting of officers to be held at he Armory New York for the pnrpose of gett ing up some suit able testimonial to the retiring Commissioners Ward and Nye. This morning another notice was received of a meeting to he held at the same place and for the same purpose, to morrow morning.

The Inspectors and Sergeants arc invited to attend; also pne patroleman from each section to represent the patrol interest, in this spontaneous ex pression of.irenerous feeling. Whether the testi monial is to bt a house and lot or a mahogany boot jack inlaid witli pearl, can not been determined on until it is seen Iiok the men are willing to come down.
