omcKu 121 Wall street, Y. Montague; cov. Court Brooklyn, The Very Latest by the Persia. London, April SO, 1551. From the Time City Article Tii in has llw final day of iu; fnrt igu and rdiar settlement in the KxchaiiKe, and the pa nit: has continued with almost uninterrupted force.

The fluctuations have again been extremely violent, prices, although they opened with Ics lonm, were finally almost as heavy as at any period week. The new Kat Indian loan has declined to 5 cent, diwutint. At the Rank of England to day there was a full demand fT nmney al the increased rate. In the open market the terms are quite as high as at the Bank, and the dealers are indisposed to take long paper. F.jr bills having 6 months to run Sand 5 per cent, are the lowest rates.

About in gold, half in hnrahalf in Russian, were taken from the Bank to day for the Continent. The rate of discount at Hamburg has advanced fmrn to 5 per cent. Metalliques were quoted at Vienna this morning at 58, which at the present rate of exchange in equivalent to about 43. The demand for silver for the continent has increased. In the Foreign Exchanges this afternoon the rates cn Am Hterdam and Hamburg were slightly lower.

The quotation for Austrian baper was almost nominal, but bowing a further unfavorable movement. The Turin correspondent of ihf Times dues not think the Austrians will roach the capital. The country had been laid under water hy of tin caualr of irrigation, mean had been taken to render the roads temporarily impracticable. The Erom troops in crossing Mount 'enis. Four hundred workmen were employed in clearing immense masses of snow.

The Sardinian government had appropriated all horf es SdANi Mao. ik WitWAMSBunoa. The Eastern District, or a portion of It, has latterly acquired an Unfortunate notriety for elopements and scandal, and last night another ease, in which one or two public characters are involved, became known. A gentleman, whom we will mention as Mr. was subjected last night to an unpleasant castiga tion from a couple of ladies in Fourth opposite Dr.

Porter's church. Owing to the storm not many people were abroad to witness the occurrence, or describe the encounter; bnt from his appearance afterwards, the gentleman had been roughly handled, in the peculiar mode which belligerent ladies exercise, and all the damage which fingers and umbrellas could do was done to his person and apparel. Ode of the ladies he says, drew a pistol, and threatened to shoot him. The strangest part of the story is, one of these ladies was Mr. L's.

wife. They had separated about three months ago, the lady evincing free love proclivities not exactly in accordance with his notions of propriety, and they have since went their separate ways in peace. One day last week Mr. L. saw his faithless wife in company ith one of the officers of the Williamsburgh Fire Department, and watching them for a while saw what need not be related.

Mr. L. gave way to a slight feeling of jealousy, and knowing the folly of pitching into his rival, who stands six feet two inches in his boots and strikes from the shoulder, he resolved on a safer plan of revenge. He went to the house of the gallant fireman and told his wife all about it. What transpired when that gentleman returned to the bosom of his family, may be better imagined than desc ribed.

He no doubt found himself in a warmer position than he ever experienced in the whole course of his professional career. Mrs. L. probably heard of it too, and learning the author of her paramour's domestic discomfiture, gave him the licking he got last night. The lady who accompanied her is said to be the wife of a Williamsburgh M.

she it was who drew the pistol. Mr. L. waited upon Captain Wogloin last night and related the above circumstances, and wanted a warrant for the arrest of his assailants. Captain Woglom told him to apply to JusticeFox this morning, which Mr.

L. said he would do, but he did not make his appearance this morning. Young Men's Christian Association. This association held its annual meeting last evening in the Lecture Room of the First Presbyterian Church in Henry street. There was a large number of members in attendance, notwithstanding the extremely inclement state of the weather.

Mr. John M. Doubleday, the President, stated that the Anniversary of the Association would be held on Tuesday evening next, probably at Plymouth Church. After the preliminary exercises, two hours were spent in canvassing the merits of two rival candi d.ites for the Presidency, Messrs. Davis and Lloyd.

The discussion consisted chiefly of personal explanations, concerning the position of the two candidates. The contest was a very close one, the vote being 42 to 40. The following are the names of the officers for the ensuing year President Hextiv H. Iloii). Vice Presidents Robert S.

At the monthly meeting in April the Union resolved to invite ladies to become associate members, and to partake, as such, of all the privileges of the Associaiton. The deceased had on a calico shirt, with red print, Congress gaiters, sack coat and light hair his face looked as though he had been shaved but a short time before committing self destruction. He had in his pocket the sum of $15 42. A testimonial concert to Mr. A.

Jantz, the organist of the Church of Charles Boromeo, takes place at the Athenaeum to morrow (Thursday) evening. The force of the celebrated choir of this church would of itself supply the material for a first class concert, and the array of outside talent on the programme of the present occasion affords the prospect of an unsurpassed entertainment. Fires and Loss of Life. The house of the Widow Baker, situated about two miles west of Greenport, Suffolk County, was consumed by fire on the night of the Sth inst. Mrs.

Baker was burned up with the house. Nothing of her remains hut the large bones were found in the ruins. Another fire occurred at Riverhead the same night destroying a two story house belonging to Capt. Henry Horton. The lower part was occupied as an oyster saloon, and the upper part by two females, who barely escaped with their lives.

Young Men's Literary Union. The regular monthly meeting of the Young Men's Literary Union occurred at their Hall last Monday evening, the recently elected President, Mr. James Robinson, in the chair. An Essay on "The importance of a good foundation in life," was read hy Mr. Miller a declamation followed, by Mr.

Chappell, after which a debate of the question "Is eloquence more the gift of nature than the acquirement of art was conducted by Messrs. Hoyt and Wm. Robinson in the affirmative, and Messrs. R. Jones and Gilbert in the negative.

The decision was given for the negative. How to Get Rid of Beggars. Mendicity has become a regular institution here, and is followed as a profession with Neapolitan devotion by hun drcds of men, women and children. A lady of our acquaintance who overflows with benevolence, and always had a supply of" cold victuals and stale bread on hand, had several regular customers for them, among them two or three good sized boys who came as regularly as the baker and milkman She happened to want a little gardening done, and asked these boys, whom she innocently supposed would jump at the opportunity to earn somethin to come and do the work, for which she would pay them. They excused themselves then and pro raised to call next day but she has not seen them since.

Smart Detectives. On the day of the water celebration the city was flooded with New York detectives, some of whom are surprisingly smart as every body knows. They arrested a number of persons whom the took to be pickpockets, and two ol those, we are informed, were apprentices in Rob ert's engraving office in New York, who had oh tained a holiday to see the sights. They looked at the soldiers and were highly pleased, when the de teetives came up and took them both into custody on suspicion ot intending to pick somebody's pock ets. They were imprisoned during the day and night, and thus debarred from enjoying themselves and next morning, there not being a particle of ev idence, they were compelled to sit for their da guerreotypes, which are now on exhibition in th lTi tll ii mi.

i jvuyuc uiiuery. ine reason me aetectives ar rested them is said to be because the boys wore a peculiar style of cap, and all people who wear such caps are supposed to be pickpockets. iffE rtjant institution. The report of the Truant Law Committee gives a very satisfactory account oi tne progress ot tins institution, and closes with a demand for increased' capabilities. One of the beneficial results of the Truant Law, wnen properly administered, cannot be statisti cally detailed, and is only observed in the general results, tnat is tne improvement the regularity ot the attendance of the pupils of the public schools, as well as the increase in the number of scholars.

This is due to the vigilance of the Tru ant business it ie to keepa surveilanee ol the streets, and pick up all vagrfbond children, and see that they are properly cared for, either by their parents, or through the means of the Truant Institution. The result of the vigilance of the three Truant officers has been felt in the public schools, especially in the Eastern District, where as we are informed there is scarcely one case of truancy on an average to each school. The Truant officer, Mr. Charles A. Davis, keeps a list of all scholars registered in the schools, and has, to a great extent, a personal knowledge of the children and is equally well known, so that his presence has a moral influence over the idly disposed juveniles To acquire this has taken time and strict attention to the duties of the office and the so qualified are necessary to the success of this iaw; ana uie present omcers, who have had to acquire this requisite knowledge by experience should not be removed, as was attempted last year' upon mere party or personal grounds.

The TnmJ Institution, if properly conducted, may be made of great benefit to the community by rescuing from the streets the neglected children, who if left to grow up uncared for, recruit the ranks of crime and dissipation, May be obtained of any ot the following named Committee of iwraiigement: The Hon. THOMAS COTREL, Brooklyn, myll till23 Presbyterian Church in Henry Street, most of the monthly meetings of the Association during the past year have been held in the lectujre rooms of that church. But two lectures have been delivered before the Association, one by the Rev. W. II. Milburn and the other by Dr.

Henry M. Seuddcr. Since October last the social reunions have been regularly held, and proved pleasant and profitable occasions to those who have participated in them. A number of the Association have availed themselves of the advantages of the French class formed in October last. Through the efficiency of the Chairman of the Library Committee, the rooms of Association have been better provided with reading matter than at any former period.

In it may be found 32 daily newspapers, 24 weeklies, 25 monthly magazines, and 10 quarterlies, besides other periodical literature. During the year 12!) volumes have been added to the library at an cx pence and the library now contains 1,301 volumes. The Treasurer's report showed a larger balance in the treasury than in previous years. In accordance with the resolution lately adopted by the Association, admiting ladies to associate membership, the names of several ladies were proposed. Mr.

Theodore Tilton proposed an amendment to the constitution by which, hereafter, the association should admit females to equal and active membership, which is to be.acted on at a future meeting. Mr. Edsall offered a resolution to the effect that as the Association has defined its position on the Slavery question, the further discussion of the subject, be excluded. The resolution was tabled. The Association did not adjourn until after eleven o'clock.

The essay for the next monthly meeting is by Mr. Jackson Dccring subject, "Cainand Abel." To Editor of the Eagle Dkab Sir, In an article which appeared In vour columns a few days ago in regard to tlie Washington Hydrant," you said the Hydrant had been put up at Fulton ferry for the accommodation of the public, which is a mistake. There are no Hydrants at the ferrv but the Union Ferry Co. have put up at the Fulton, and will at their other ferries, my Patent Self closing Funcets. The mistlike was very natural, as both the Faucet and Hydrant shut themselves.
