As an illustration of the methods frequently adopted in Wall street the rumors that were started Friday afternoon concerning an im mense defalcation in some great but unnamed Broad street firm, have yaluo but in no other way. This defalcation was said to amount to $1,000,000 or more a sum of snch magnitude as to insure the failure of any firm iio matter how strong. These rumors finally settled upon the banking firm of I. S. Worrnser as the victim of the Bnpposed theft.

Other rumors were theu sprung whioh took advantage of the entangled condition of Field, Lindloy, Wiechers Ht books and insinuated that Worrnser Co. were represented by the mysterious initials over one of the largest of that unfortunate firm's accounts. These ware the stories. Yesterday morning the unscrupulous scheme was exposed and tho rumors utterly failed of their intended effect upon the market. Worrnser fc Co.

have been behind the recent movement in Chicago gas toward a higher level of prices. They took hold of it when it tluotuated between SI and 54 and have sent it steadily upward despite all the tremendous interests which the movement antagonized, until Friday last it touched This is one of the most activo and quick acting stocks on tho list and early in the manipulation it was thought impossible to send the price up to 60 without a reaction that would counteract tho rise. Naturally a great short interest was created, which lost steadily as the price went up. Isidor Worrnser was too buiy to talk to an Eagle reporter yesterday morning and courteously turned him over to one of the junior members of the firm, who said: "The rumors started on Friday have not the slightest foundation in fact. Wo have placed them as emanating from certain interests who are short of Chicaga gas from 50,000 to, perhaps, 70,000 shares all the way up from 50.

They thought to broak the price and cover their losses by these contemptible tactics. They failed. Last night they boasted that Chicago gas would open at 03, but it opened at 04 and now (at 11:30) it is Gi. They are hoist by their own Everyone in the office seemed to treat the thing as a huge Joke. One of the young partners prepared a big bundle out of newspapors and marked it ill big black letters $1,000,000.

As a customer or acquaintance would come in ho would protend to find it in tho man's pocket, and in burlesque tragedy would exclaim: "Wo are saved. Here is tho money." Then all the other young partners, the clerks and even the senior members of tho firm would burst into roars of laughter. Other rumors, that have no speculative possibility behind them and are more likely to be true, concern tho connections of Field, Lindley, Wiechers Co. with S. V.

White Co. The former firm acted as the representative of the latter in tho big September corn corner which went to pieces. These rumors come from Chicago and say that whilo Field, Lindley, Wioehers Co. openly bought for S. V.

White they secretly and constantly betrayed him by selling short through a Chicago correspondent. This, it is said, was tho real cause of the White failure. No member of the latter firm will confirm those rumors, but what is just as significant neither will they deny them. They simply say that they knew nothing really about it. This is a change of front, for a week ago Mr.

White and Mr. Hopkins wero indignantly denying that any such thing could bo true. Mr. Hopkins said to nn Eagle reporter: "We have nothing to Bhow that Field, Lindley, Wiechers Co. played a double game on us.

It is a serious accusation to make and wo will not make it. No one can really know until their books are straightened. Mr. Gould, who is' our assignee and the assignee for the other firm, does not know any more than any one else." 8. V.

White Co. are fllowly coming out of their difficulties. The Chicago branch haa settled wilh its creditors and only neods an application to the court to permit it to resume business. The New York house isn't quite as far advanced, but it is getting there. BISHSP OILMSDI'S SUCCESSOR.

The pariah hall of tho Church of the Atonement, on Seventeenth streot and Fifth avenue, has seldom presented a more animating appearance than it did last Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings, when the annual fair of the church was held. The festival was conducted nnder the auspices of the parish and missionary lociety, and proved to be a gratifying success. The congregation was largely represented each night and contributed generously to the prosperity of the festival. The decorations in the hall were lavish and beautiful.

The various booths were trimmed with gay draperies, and tho effect produced was harmonious and entrancing. Everything to suit the deninnds of the Christmas season was exhibited and holiday purchasers lost no time in securing the many bargains offered. Rev. Mr. Willman, the new pastor of the church, was present every evening and tok opportunity of the occasion in mailing himself acquainted with his people.
