The funeral of Charles F. Emerson was held last evening at his late residence, 12" Park place. Mr. Emerson died on Monday last at Nyack, whoro ho had gone to spend Sunday. Without any warning he was stricken down by paralysis, and, although he lingered for some hours, it was without pain or suffering.

When tho friends of the family assembled at the house at 7 o'clock last eTcning, the Rev. Dr. Edward Taylor of Binghamton read the simplo funeral service. Tho casket stood in tho front drawing room surrounded by many hlmdsonie floral pieces sent by the business and social friends of the deceased. After tho rending of the service Dr.

Taylor spoke briefly of tho one who had gone before. His remarks were full of hope and sympathy for tho ones left behind and what he said of the deceased was born of a close intimacy which has extended for many years. Dr. Taylor said that a generation of associations with the family of the deceased had rendered bis heart particularly sympathetic for the office ho was to perform. Tho associations had been varied and very tender, and culminated in tho sceno to witness which those present, had assembled.

The silver cord had snapped and the golden vessel had broken. It had come so suddenly that it was as yet hird to realize whether it was a dream or roality. Thirty yoars before tho vener ablo speaker said ho had become the pastor' of the deceased and ten years later he had officiated at bis marriage to the ono now left to mourn his loss. Li'e indeed was a serious problem. Eternity was but a part of tho present.

"Wo must noeds walk softly in tho grief that has como," said he, "for we are in tho presence of bruise I reeds. We must go gently or thoso reeds will break. The heart that is broken needs to be bound up and it is our duty to do all in our power to soothe the aching hearts of the wife and daughter. It is to Christ we must all look for our comfort and support in affliction. He broke up the sorrow of every funeral to which Ho went, for Ho came that He might send the Comforter of all to us.

Sometimes, in our suffering wo can s.ij no rift in the overhanging cloud of sorrow. Then comos ovening and with it peace and light and hope. No clianco happening has done this thing. While the parting was so midden, it was better than protracte 1 sufforing and uncertainty." Iu conclusion Dr. Taylor prayed for tho peace and support of the Diviuo Comforter upon thoso so sadly afflictod.

About forty members from the New York produce exchange were present. The deceased was also a member of tho firm of Pugh Emerson, whose business consisted of shipping provisions to tho West Indies. Mr. Emerson, who was 4K years of nge. leaves a wife and one daughter.

Gymnastics aucl ITnitjuc Iis Iilay ol Fii eworJcs. From ln.onn to yo.uoo people will remember Sherman park by reason of tho livlicst scramble to get in out of the wet they have had this summer. The promoters of that little suburb of New York city hired Brighton Beach for the day and distributeil some sixty thousand tickets through tho two cities entitling the holder to ail the privileges of that pleasant resort. The result was sucdi a jam as Brighton Beach has not seen before in years. In tho afternoon tho crowd were entertain 1 with a concert in the pavilion by Conterno's military baud, assisted by half a dozen competent soloists; by a daring slack wire performance on the lawn, and by ihtylight lireworks. in which figures of mon and women, elephants.

buUeriho and giants were sent whirling through tho air. In the evening, when the grounds were so packed that standing room was hard to find, a briiiiaut outdoor lireworks display was given. It included large set pieces on laud and ou floats far out on tho water, and gorgeous parti colored rockets and bombs. At 0:30 the lireworks were followed by a shower that made a square foot of roof over your head nearly as valuable as a currier lot. The affair was managinl by George W.

a carpenter, of .128 Nineteenth street; Frederick Hunford, aged 0, a painter, of Eighteenth street, and Frank Bush, aged 31. of Tenth street, aro Brooklyn young men who havo acquired thoir ideas of Coney Island from readin.t sensational nows papers. So when they reached West Brighton yesterday morning they went swimming in tho creek in a costume that was decollete clear down to their feet. Astoniahod and horritied Officer Cummings made thorn dress and accompany him to police headquarters, whoro they had tho finest apartments the cooler affords. The row over Josoph II.

Stnmp's loaso of the hotel that bears his name has reached such an acute stage that yo3terdny Mr. Stump had ox Polico Sergeant Grangor arrosto I for disorderly conduct. Stump is a Georgian. He declares that Granger persuaded him to soil out a fine hotel iu Georgia and take the placo on tho Boulevard, representing that it was so complete and well furnished that he would not have to buy as much as a salt cellar for it and that it was paying a clear profit of So.OOO a year. Ho leased tho promises to Stump for five years at 1,200 tho first and $1,500 tho four succeeding years, and Stump paid beins the first two months' rent.

On tho 20th of April Stump arrived at Coney Island and took possession of his hotel. Granger gave him a now lease to sign and put a pistol to his hoad, tolling him ho would blow his brains out if bo did not. Mrs. Augusta StetTens witnessed tho signature and Stump called on her to bear witness also that ho signed under protest. Tiiis new leits i provided that Stump sliould pay more to Granger immediately and tho balance of the money on August 1, that is $700.

It also ga Granger the right to reserve room Xo. to his own use. Stumn had always found Granger a whole soulcd, good natural fellow up to this timo. Ho now discovered a marked difference. Granger interfered with customers and thsholp, telling tho latter that he would soon havo Stump out of the placo.

He seized an additional room and used it as a private storeroom; he took the lock off tho hotel storeroom and put it on tiio stable, and Stump's wines and other stores were exposed to theft for a day and a half. He would stand on tho verauda and warn his acquaintances not to patronize Stump, Ho got an oil stove in his room and annoyed all the other guest by tho odors producod in cooking his meals. In fact in every way that ho could Granger interfered with Stump's quiet and peaceful possession of tho hotel which he had lcasod. When August 1 camo Grander demanded the $700, being the balance of tho year's rent as pro vided for in the second loaso which Stump signed at the pistol point. Stump refused payment and Granger began dispossess proceedings.

On Tuesday Judge Newton decided in fayor of Granger on the evidence presented, but granted a stay for a week pending an appeal. He told Grangor that during week ho must not interfere with Stump in any manner. Granger wont right to tho hotel and began interfering immediately and Stump found his wife crying when he wont home. He got a warrant for Granger and hiring Lawyer Eldridgo is going to make it hot for his persecutor. The eleventh annual beaeh party and dinner of the United States medicine company took placo at Manhattan Beach last evening.

Soventy five or eighty girls who work for tho company woro tho guests. They had the west ban luot room, and anybody who thinks they did not havo fun is mistaken. The menu comprised tho best the house afforded, and tho girls went right down tho card, neglecting nothing. Tho room was a pretty sight, when the dinner slowed up at P.oman punch, for the girls all had largo corsage bouquets, wore bright colored paper caps and were laughing hard onough to shake the walls. Aftor the dinner tho girls went to hear Giluioro and then saw the fireworks.

Chief McKane is beginning to got over the stato of profound amazement into which ho was thrown by the attempt of George A. Mitchell to impersonate him ou his own island. He usually has a keen sense of humor, but tho funny sido of this matter failed to appear to his risibilities and ho took Mitchell quite seriously. "I could hardly keep my hands off him. He doos not seem to think that ho has done anything wrong.

Ho simply says he was drunk and seems to think that excuses him. He is the first rasn who ever said I took a crooked dollar." St. Charles' branch of the Catholic knights of America occupied the large hall atFeltman's yes day, and Eider lodge No. 1,035, Knights and ladies of honor, tho small hall. There were about live thousand people presont in both places and dancing lasted until a late ho r.

Folks who frequent Vaccas' hall aro watching for the younger of the Austin sisters to break down. Her stage name is Aimeo and she is tho one who walks on tho ceiling. Their act would hi extremely difficult for men and is unparalleled by women. It is very exhausting and on several occasions Aimee has shown weakness and been unable to walk the ceiling, whereupon some gallant men among the spectators hail her with yells and jeers. Her horror of the ceiling walking performance is plainly visible on tho other poor girl's face and everyone can see her nervousness.

The sisters iiad to make a new contract with Vaccas, as they found themselves unable to do two turns a day. They now appear only in tho evening. This was before I went into the water. On returning and unlocking the door of the bath hiiuse I found both had been stolen. My room was No. within twelve feet of the open office, and plainly in sight of its occu P'Uit. It is uioM remarkable that a thief with a skeleton key could walk in and out.

Under such circumstances, although the rule to deposit valuables in tho office tfiis not obeyed, yet it would seem that Mr. Gcrhardt should be responsible in this case. What is tho law on this subject? W.

Smith. C70 I'ltEStDEKT STP.r.r.T. August 11. ISO' The question as to law is pertinent, because the place is Coney Island, where the unwritten code of McKane sways the people. Mr.

Smith should have gone straight to John Y. McKane, He should not have said be was going there. He should havo gone quietly, saying nothing to anybody till he reached the presence of the chieftain; then ho sliould. have told the whole truth. He would have recovered those diamonds in half an hour, and some people would havo seen stars quite as curious ami interesting as Mars is at tho present moment.
