In addition to these serious disadvantages they are still further handicapped by the undue stress of school life. The sole aim of modern education would seem to consist in the attempt to develop the mind at the expense of the body. The necessity of exercise and fresh air as a part of a child's training is strangely overlooked. Mental and physical education should go hand Ih hand. Wherever possible playgrounds ol ample scope should be attached to and, above all, young children should never ha expected to work longer than two hours at A stretch.

23 2fsu WORCESTER GOLD MINE. A Yawning Hole Which Is as Eager as Ever to Swallow Somebody's Money. "There's a gold mine," said George H. Dutton, 6 College street, as he wae showing a reporter for the Telegram over the territory near his home and discoursing on its advantages. The gold mine was not counted among the strong points of the locality, strangely enough, but It was equally of interest.

The mine is located near the (southeastern boundary of the Dutton land and is comprised within the land which some South Worcester peopleproposed for a public park when the agitation was on a few months ago in the south end, and the South Worcester Improvement Society was speaking in its loudest tones. Everything in the vicinity of the mine ia Just ae it was left by the prospectors who dug into the hill in the hopo of wresting from the earth large and paying quantities of precious yellow metal. If the city eventually accepts the park offered to it as a playground for South Worcester children, on the top of College Hill, paying the price which was asked of it by Mr. Dutton, 530,000, it will not have a gold brick, but a really truly gold mine. The bole in the hill where the Drosnectinc was done resembles very much a great wide yawning well.

It is twenty or thirty feet deep, from the top to the surface of the water in the bottom which makes It Imnnasiw. for the eye unassisted to see the real depth of the shaft. The hole was there when bought the big farm on the tOD nf th hill which has since been cut up into houselots, and he never undertook to fathom the fais tory of the gold mining attempt on the farm before it came into his possession, eight years ago. But there the shalt stands vawnine to en gulf all the capital that anybody else who believes In its gold bearing possibilities is ready to throw into It. On all sides of the opening are stone splinters which were raised and dumped there while uhe work was Eoing on. Over a portion of these ston chinning has grown a scant herbage, and the stranger to the mine story of the Dutton farm does not know he is on the edge of a gold mine until he sees the hole yawnine beforn him. A barrier of small trees which were felled and piled one on the other entirely surrounds the mine so that ramblers or the cows won't fall into the deep hole and perish before assist ance can come to them. "I am told," said Mr. Dutton.

There is auite a water shed at that locality and down through the center of the gaily is a place for the water to rush wet weather.

Small timber grows sparsely on the sids. The sp ot is protected from the northeast and west winds, which, witn its gradually en larging mouth in the shape of a zraDho phone horn, it gathers in the warm breezes of the soutn and the sunbeams. Up at the apex of the gully the Indians used to winter. In telling of the warmth of the locality Mr. Dutton related an experience he had one winter there.

He was passing through the tract close by the mine and accidentally knocked down a bound post. At first he thought he would take it to the house with him and drive it down in the spring, but he was prompted to try It then. The ground was frozen everywhere and the weather was cold. To his surprise, after giving the Iwund post a couple of knocks, he found It had passed through a thin crust of frost and then en tered tne ground as easily as if it was snHne time. That little incident satisfied him that the Indians knew how to pick a winter camp site where the very best advantages prevail.

Mr. Dutton never has found any relics of the Nipmuc nation In the gully and he savs he has never looked for any. The gold mine will be useful some day. Houses are going up all around it at City View, and it will save that much digging for the husbandman who buys the lot. Worcester (MasB.) Telegram.

The barbed wire fence is his greatest protection.
