The evidence established the faot that tho deceased and his brother were followed, beaten and kicked by Pete Clark, Mike McFa GAXand others of the card players, from the effects of which Hisgins lost his life, and it further transpired that this "whipping" took place at the instigation of a young girl whom Agoins had invited to the Catholic pic nic, which took place last week, and disappointed her. The investigation was further posponed until to morow The house No. 26S South 4th street, was entered on Friday night by two burglars, who invaded the Bleeping apartment of Mr.

VOUB O'CLOCk, F. X. IIUFOttTANT JFUO.U JAMAICA. THE BOMBARDMENT OF GREYTOWN. Hitter Feeling Against the KLOGKADS JUAtf BT TBB BRITISH.

Ramorcd Chase After the Cyaue. Cholerajn Jarnaica and Barbadoes. New York, Aug. 7. The Star of the'lVest reports great excitement at Kingston, Jamaica, in consequence of the bombardment of Greytown.

The teeling against the Americans was universal, though it was doubted whether the act had the sanction of tbe Amtrican government. The Journal insinuates that Corn. Hollins was grossly intoxicated all the while. It also states that among the first houses destroyed by the (Jyaue's guns was that ot the BritisU uonsul. Trie papers all comment very severely upon the affair, and pronounce it the most cowardly tranur action on record.

The Journal calls upon the British Government to dispatch a fleet at once, to bombaid New York or Boston, in retaliation. Greytown, it contends, was nder the British protectorrate, and as such, the British Government moot vindicate itself, no matter what results may enaue. Public meetings had been held to raise relief for the people ot San Juan, a British frigate had taken possession of Pemter ArenaB, and other English vessels had arrived to maintain the blockade. The English flag had been raised at Greytown, a rumor was current at Kingstown when the Star left that a British and Hrench ves sel of war bad been sent lit pursuit of the Oyane, which had sailed for Penaacola. In relation to the above Capt.

Tinklepaugh, of the S.ar of the West, came out in a card in New York evening papers, denying tbitt Punta Arenas is held by the British (Jommander. He adds tbat all was quiet at Ereytown when he left and that everything was in satisfactory condition. The cholera was rapidly subsiding in Jamaica. It had entirely disappeared from ifaimoutn, Stewarttown, and Rio Bueno. From Barbadoes it was also abating, although it had committed fearful havoc, the total number of deaths being between twelve and filteen thousand.

Death of nPulladelphla Merchant Philadelphia, Aug. 7, Mr. Ashburnera retired merchant a resident of West Philadelphia, died ot cholera yesterday at Gape May. THE BOSTON REMEDY. Theownerls red tested lo call, prove oronerty. curiesanaiaaensrawy, 5 It P. L. BENNETT, Naw UUocht, The investigation of this melancholy affair, which was deferred until this morning', was held before Coroner Ball, in the Court room of the City Hall, at 10 o'clock. Mayor Lambert was associated with the Coroner during the investigation.

There were only a few persons in attendance. The prisoner was not present, but we understand that during his incarceration in the jail he has displayed the utmost indifference. He thinks, or pretends to think that ho has committed no offence, but he has some vague idea that something has occurred with which he is connected, and which causes his detention. The Coroner's Jury having been requested to take their seats, the proceedings were commenced by calling tho first witness. Arnold Hallet being sworn, said I am a physician; I reside in 312 Atlantic street; I was sent for on Wednesday evening.

August 2d, between eight and nine o'clock; I found in the 3d story, front room, Mrs. Tuoker with a child in br arms; the ccild had an incision under the left ear, extending about four inches across the caused itedeath; the wound severed the large vessels in that region; the child was dead; I found a great deal of blood on the floor, and the mother's drees was saturated with blood from the wound on the child's throat, and several wounds upon her own were bleeding freely; I wade no enquiries as to how this occur ed; I learned from Mr. Denyse that the child's father had committed the act. To a Jutot. I heard Mrs.

Tucker say that her husband had committed the deed. There was blood upon the floor and upon the walls. James Dtnise being sworn said, that he resides at No. 403 Atlantic street. I keep a boarding bonse there.

Mr. John N. T. Tucker and his wife and children boarded with me. Between the houts of 9 and 10 o'clock I was down stairs, and I heard seme of my folks calling to me that there was something the matter up stairs.

I ran up stairs, supposing that Mr. Tucker was whipping oue of his children When I got there, I found all was apparently quiet in the room. then heard from some of my family down Btairs th at Tucker wa3 getting out of the window. I thMi ran down stairs, and waited at the front doo? with some of my family. I did not see him out of the window.

I then came into the house, and soon after I heard screams of murder up stairs. I then ran up stairs, accompanied by Mr. Myers and Mr. Henderson. I burst open the door, unil'saw the child lying with its throat cut on the floor, end, as I thought, Mr.

Tucker was then at his who was on the floor, and he ever her, with a razor in his hand. The razor b'hown is the one. Then Mr. Myers and Mr. Henderson jumped into the room, and grappled wii'h Tucker, and took bim away.

Mr. Myers WaB obliged to beat him to insensibility before they ouid take the razor from him. The officer named Coverly or some such name came and secured im, he took him away. I heard him say while kV yers and Henderson had hold of him they are trying to murder me or something to that effect. Mr.

Tucker had boarded at my house two that very night. Mr. Tucker was in the habit of drinking, he appeared to be intoxicated various times. He appeared to me to be jealous of every one at those times. I have heard since the evening of the occurrence that he was jealous of his wife.

I heard it from Mrs Tucker. I have heard others eay so, I can't remember vf ho, I heard him one evening beating one of his children with a stick of some kind severely. He acted as if he were intoxicated. He did not act as if he was crazy in any other way. I have seen him apparently sober; I mean he Acted as almost any body else would have acted; I never heard him say that the child he had killsd was not hip.

I have heard Mrs. Tucker say that he hud often accused her of both these children not being his; I never kaew him to abuse his wife and children except that one time I spoke of; my being on the first floor and they up stairs it is impossible for me to hear every thiug. The Sunday afternoon previous to the occurrence he had a pistol; it was one of Allen's single barreled pistols: he borrowed it of me; he said he would go down to the Sunday preaching at tlin Hall, and would have this to defend himself I asked him for the pistol on the evening of the' occurrence just as he was goiug upstairs; he said it was up stairs and he would bring it down; that pistol has not been seen since by me or by any of my family to my knowledge; I have nevtr believed Mr. Tucker naturally crazy without stimulants; Mr. Tucker came irom Dr.

Ronton 's when he came to board at my house: lie told me the reason he had left Dr. Benton's was that the board was too high lor mm. To a Juror. 1 asked him for the pistol that evening. He was as usual intoxicated.

This was about Dtteen or twenty minutes before the occurrence. The door of Mr. Tucker's room was fastened when I went to it. Mrs. Tucker told me that he had fastened the door, To the Coroner.

We have tea at 6 o'clock in the evenine. He was at the taole that evening. I did not hear any unfriendly conversation going on between Tucker and his wife at the table. Afttr tea they went into the yard, and had some diDute there. What it was I do not know.

He eeemed to be pretty angry his wife was not Thev went un stairs, and then went out, about 8 o'clock. They remained out about one hour and a hall: Mr. Tucker came home first, about five or ten minutes before hjs wife; I asked him at the time to give me thepistol; his reply was as before stated; he then immediately up stairs; I noticed he staggered as he went up stairs, and I Fmelt the liquor on his breath; he had nothing in liishandB when I saw him go upstairs; Mrs. Tucker came in shortlv afterwards; I saw her go up stairs; my wife. let her in; Mrs.

Tucker, made no remark to me, nor I to her; after Mr. Tucker came in I do not know of his going out again the first alarm was about filteen minutls after they came in; I have had rno conversation with Mrs. Tucker since: she said he commenced accusing her of something what I don't know in the street, and caught hold of her and told her if she attempted to run away from him he eaid he would blow her brains out she then, pulled her tin from htm, tola mm to uo it ana run towards a house and stopped in tne street to see if he tht iommg sue aid not see anyming or mm int immediately to the house as fast as she was and when the got into tne nouse sne went COltllJ iinmediit. tho took hold of the door ic lock rd Mr. Tucker's little dauah and found .....1 lnt hop in aha i in lhs trundle bed with his head under mm (.

Street preaching took place yesterday, as on several Sundays previous, at the junction of North 4th and. North 2d sts. Mr. Parsons enlightened the aadiance, which was orderly, and one arrest was made. The Christian Ibea of Woman.

Rev. W. H. Milburn, Chaplain of the IT. S.

House of Representatives, delivered an eloquent discourse last evening, in the Sands street Methodist Church, in this city, on the Christian Idea of Woman. He spoke of the position occupied by woman under the old Jewish dispensation of the place awarded her in cultured Greece, and martial Rome and said that there they were but the mere playthings or drudges of man. He drew a strong picture of the fair but frail Aspasia, who, by the combined charms of her manners and conversation, completely won the affections of the great Pericles. Bat though Aspasia was the most beautiful and accomplished of Athenian women, and acquired for herself great renown, and was finally made a priestess of Diana of Ecbatana, yet she was nothing more or less than a brilliant courtezan. The speaker also alluded to Sappho but she, too, fell far short of his idea of the true woman.

It was not till the dawn of Christianity that woman's inflaenoe was justly recognized and made available. In speaking of woman's proper sphere, the speaker said that pre eminently by her nature, by her physical and moral conformation, is she made for home. The field of maternity is sufficiently broad for her. Maternity is her heritage and patrimony. The sacred name of mother, with all its hallowed connections, its inspiring thoughts the name of mother tells us where she she belongs, and where, of right, is her position and her privilege.

To maintain intact the delicacy of her organization, to maintain the broad sweep of her love, to maintain the Bway over the passions these are her duty and her sphere, and the field where they are to be cultivated is Home.
