Wall Stbket, Msroh 1. The derangements of the money market for tha past few days have been felt In all the exchanges, those for produce and exportable produots as well ss the Stock Exohange. The export trade Is nearly at a stand. Shippers oan with dlffloulty sell thoir bills, and when a market Is found the price which they receive is from ten to fourteen cents In the pound sterling IeB than that whloh the; could have obtained a week ago. This entails losses upon tne shippers and deranges the markets for the staples both hare and In Europe, The mercantile classes have been unable for the past week to obtain the least aooommodation from their banks, even If they deelred it, and the high rates for money at this centre have caused a decline In the domestlo exchanges at all the prlnolpal Interior points.

The banks In this city were carrying a very heavy line of discounts when this trouble came, and in this way fostered the speculation upon the Btock market, giving to stock operators the preference over the mercantile olasiss as borrowers. Whan the pinch came and tbe reserves were sharply drawn down by tbe demands of the interior banks for thoir balauces tho have called loans from stock brokers as sparingly aa possible, and at onoo shut down upon all accommodation to other borrowers. The associated banks of this oity are now below the lino, tho error of $10,000,000 discovered yesterday lu deposits, making a deflolenoy of $1,014,625 in the reserve. The statement of last Saturday was made up on declining averages, and consequently the actual condition of the bauks ia considerably lower than these figures. This mahos It probable that the bank return of this week will be.

an exceptionally bad one, and It will be interesting to soo by the return whether the banks call is their stock loans this weok to any great extent. Certain It is that the mercantile interests will get no recognition, if application Is made for loans this week. The demoralization of the foreign exchanges noted above, was due yestorday not so much to tho flurry In money as to the faot that London bankers were buying freely of dlmoBt all our stocks and railroad bonds, sending their orders by cable, and when the purchases were made the brokers here drew upon their principals by cable, thus making exohango to an enormous amount. As the price of cables feel the rates for sterling dropped to almost unprecedented figures. These low rates suddenly started gold shipments from Loudon, and now over $1,320,000 in gold ia on the way hither.

Exchange was advanced one oont and a half this morning mainly in consequence of the fall yesterday being too rapid, but tho market is still unsettled. Stocks wers a little feverish at the opening, but Western Union led the list in a sharp advance which steadied prices of ths other Vanderbllt specialties snd at the call the market though Irregular was generally strong and tbe feature was a rise in Ontario Western, Omaha and some of tho other low priced etooks. Toon came a sharp advance in the Vanderbllt and Oould specialties and the tone was strong for the remainder of the morning. During tbe oast year some Brooklyn firms adopted electrlo llhtiug, mainly for advertising purposes at flrsl, but thW city so far has been bohlndfianol In its use, whKo mBiohan le of other cities, noticeably of Boston nnd Philadelphia, Vae in tho past few months oitonaivcly used, the electric ligjit, and many nulls and large manufactories thrc ugB tho country have had ap paratua put in, aud roport quite favorably on its practicability. An EAai.B reporter, who recently made inquiries i repard to eleotrlo lighting in this locality, found' thai; there were oevon Arms or persons now in the business or preparing to oporate In York, as follow! The Fuller, Brush, Western, UniUd States, Edison; ArnouX and Uockusen eleotrical companies.

Of those so far as oan be learned, but two have apparatus In use In this city, the Brush and Fuller companies. The Brush Company has six light maohlnes in the' stores' of Looser, Paret and Nutting, on Fulton street, and'' tha Fuller Oompany has apparatus In use at' the. Eagle Mills, Bliss 4 Williams' and Ds Castro Donner: These and some of the other companlos aro ta'negotia Uon, it la said, to put In a number of apparatus lo other places In this oity, but the places so far been learned, as there seems to be considerable seirssy among the different companies as to their Intended operations, owing, presumably, to the competition among, them. Each of the companies doing business, ol course, claims to nave ths best practical appartus, and soma of tbe managers prsdloted the utter failure of their competitors fn the business. Last season ths eleatrfa lighting of watering places adjaosnt to Brooklyn was dono by the following firms Arnoux and Hookusen liadV lights at Brighton Beach, ths Fuller Company llghleoT Long Beaoh, ths United States Company had lights at Manhattan Beach and the Brush light was used for some time at the Brighton Beach Bathing Pavilion and Sea Beach Palace, Arnoux and Hockusen having lights on ths Iron Pier, On the 19th of last month the Brooklyn Bleotrlo Light Company published its first annual report, signed by H.

Thereupon Clarke, Nollel.

Holmes, Wilde, Ladd and others invented machines to test the usefulness of Faraday's dlsoovery for lighting purposes, but none of these machines obtained a commercial valuo, as the principle of tbe division of the light had not then been applied. Within the paBt two years this principle has been Bolved, it iB claimed, by a number ot inventors, and ths rocoat derelopinent of olsctrio lighting became possible. In no other branch of invontlon has thors been mora extreme jealousy aud feeling displayed than in that of electric lightning. The persons In tbe business in Now Vrtt lf Tl 1 A I. sentatlvo of the Eagle had no word of praise for any but their own peouliar plan or patents.

An extract from a circular issued by one of the companies, whloh is a fair sample of those issued bv other oomnanieo. will show the claims made in favor of each of the many, inventions. It is as follows The Blank system of olectrlo lightning is theonlyv one, of all tho proposed ByBtems of eleotrio lighting, which has passed the experimental atsge and olearly demonstrated its right to a secure place among the practical lights of the day. An immense field is opening before electrlo light, in which no other known illuminator is so "well fitted to shine." If is not, however, a boundless field. It is no more to be expected that it will ever entirely displace gas or oil, than that locomotives will displace horses.

Gas will probably continue to hold its own as the llsht for dnmnntin ami small Vises in cities and towns, and oil will field in similar situations in villages and hamlets. Tho Gramme (French) and Siemens (Anglo Germsn) aro types of machines much more succosef ul than any of thoir predecessors but when Mr. Blank entered the field with his machine In 1876 after forty four years nf OTnnrinnrA nnrl ronaarrth hv ntlnti fha.n m. machiue known, either here or abroad, that was in any respect a practical or commercial rmcceas, No machtna was then known that would furnlBh a current for number of lamps and permit of their being burned in one circuit, with steadiness and uniformity. Very soon after Mr.

Blank entered the field, he presented to tho public nn apparatus which was entirely clear from tbe defects of all other systems, and, as tbe publlo were waiting for just such an apparatus, they wolcomed ths now comer, and the result is that to day this olectrio light is practioally the sole occupant of the field for at least forty nine out of ovory fifty lights that have been aold in this country are Blank lights. Within the post few days Arnoux and Hoskussti have arranged to light np the Oapitol, Pennsylvania avenue and the White House on Inauguration day the Edison Company has announced that it has perfected its arrangemonts for carrying on its business 022 a large scale, the BruBh Company has obtained oon. tracts from the Anglo American Electric Company for a largo number of maohlnes, and the other oompanle are bestirring themselves all through ths United States Canada and Mexico. The laat item of news locally Is that givon by tha Brash Oompany, which announces that machines have been put in to light Gaff, Fleisch man extensive works at BlissvWe, L. IV A WIPE'S SORROW.

Abandoned by filer Husband White III With Drops He ta Befriended br a Brooklyn Woman U'tillo Under Arreat, A strange scene was enacted in Justice Belts' Court at Jamaica, yesterday morning. At nine o'olock a woman about thirty years of age entered, leading a littlo girl of eight or nlno. Bhe sank exhausted into a chair tendered by the Justice. Bhe was apparently not over thirty years of age, and though worn by disease her face still boro traces of beauty that is likely never to return. Sho is afflicted with tbe dropsy.

Soon after a man, with smutty face and hinds, was brought from the jail by an officer. He gavo bis name as Cornell AbraniB, and said tbe woman was his wife. He Is an engineer on the rapid transit division of the Long Island Railroad. Last Saturday night he was arrested 0 his engine at East New York end taken to Jamaica nd locked up. His wifs had preferred a charge of disorderly conduct against hiin.

In that he bad abandoned her, and Bhe was likely, with her child, to become a chargo upon the town. In answer to questions by Justice Belts, A brains aalil tin harl nnt Ahanrlnned hlfl wlfa. hut waq wtftfner 1 provide for hor to a reasonable extent. He did not, liowevor, wish to live with hor, Mrs, Abrams said ho placed her in a boarding bouse with their child, but neglected to pay the bill, and she had to find quarters elsewhere, and was now in danger of having to raoata again unless the bill was paid, Abrams did not deny this. He is a Protestant and she a Catholic, and tUs difference In matters of belief seems to bs tho root of thoir trouble.

Sho said she had boon badly treated for some years, but up to a recant period was sble to partly provldo for horself by working on a sowing machine. Being unable to do no longer, she desired that provision be made for her support. Bhe is paying $7 a week board. Abrams said he was only getting $05 a QiOQth and oould not afford to allow her $7 a week, You oan't, if you want to Bupport two families out of It," said the Justice Abrams was ordored to find bonds in $500 to support his wife and child, or to go to jail. Mr.

Harris, agent for the railroad company, rof used to go on his bond, and rather than go to jail he tried to effect a compromise with his wlfo, but she would ecoept none of his propositions. At half past ton o'olook Mrs. Jennlo Brusb, of Atlantic avenue, Brooklyn, and another lady. walked into court. Abrams and Mrs.

Brush re cognized each other with smiles. He is a boarder in ber house. Bhe offered to go his bail. She owned a farm In Aml tyvllle, she said. Justice Betts mads out the and Mrs.

Brush signed it. Then she and Abrams started out of the room. "I must hare some money," said Mrs. Abrams, Her ohild, too, began to 'I haTon't any money for you," said Abrams, "Yon. must do something for her," said tho Justioe.

"There," ohimod In Mrs. Brush, "help youraolf, Abe," and shs tossed hor well filled puree to him. Abrams opened It, took out a ten dollar gold coin and handed it to the justice, who gave it to Mrs. Abrams. Then the party left tbe room, and Abrams and Mrs, Brash and hex cloud cams together to Brooklyn.

DRAMATIC AND MUSICAL. Brooklyn ParK Theatre. a surprisingly large audience, the extraordinary charaoter of the weather duly considered, gathered at the Brooklyn Park Theatre, last evening, to weloome the return of Mr. James Colller'a "Banker's Daughter'' Combination. It was an exceedingly fashionable and handsome audience, and a very enthusiastio one before the piece had proceeded well into the second act.

It is not surprising either that bo large a number of people should have braved tho weather to witness the performance, for the piece is exceedingly brisk, clear and eventful, and has, moreover, been sanctioned ty at least three seasons of popular success. This, by the way, Is a great recommondation to Brooklyn audiences. It Is needless, perhaps, to recount the incidents and the plot of the play. It is Bufnclont to recall the general outline. It la essentially a play of American although the action of the piece situated abroad.

The mammonite father who barters his daughter for gold forms a conspicuous feature of the play as he does of society. To avert Impending calamity he deceives three people, his daughter, whom be keeps fn ignorance of the fact that her purchase is unknown to her husband her lover, who lias not the necessary money to serve the broken down banker's purpose, and the husband himself, who mar srles the daughter unconscious of the fact that Bhe has already plighted herself to another. Out of thia wretched but too natural complication of mammonism and deceit grow others. A French Count detoots the patent faot that the young artist who has loet his love still retains for her the passion of early dayB, and provokes Him Into a duel in whloh the American is killed. Husband and wifa arp separated and Bt length are brought to a realisation of each other's excellences, snd the soft, anellow second love takes tho place of the mol anoholy which hangs over the pair bo cruelly deceived et the outset and so rudely united by death.

Into Che play the author has woven a very ingenious comedy element, in which the busliing commercial American Is caricatured, and the shoddy but good Iisarted daughter of trade is exhibited in the aspect of a devoted but rather careless wife mated to a decrepit millionaire. The company as at present constituted Is jnore than merely good In these days of 111 balanced combinations it may be termed superlatively excellent. The part of John Strebelow, the oultured Amexioan fiontleman who marries the banker's daughter, Lillian, la assumed by Mr. F. C.

Bangs, who possesses the dlg ftlty, easy grace and polish essential to the character, and a depth of feeling admirably calculated to expresB tho emotions called up by his situation. Mr. Alexander fitimrt, formerly leading Juvenile man of the company, takes the rolt of Harold Jloutleagt, the young artist, and playe It with a sympathetic simplicity deserving of the hlghoot praise, beside looking the picture of roman tic disappointment and melancholy. Mr. Oharles Waloolt as Qeor) Wathington Fhipps with his traveler's guide and eatalogue of ourlosities, Sila uneonauerable patrlorlsm and his matter of fact manner won, as usual, rounds of up Tjfauae and merriment.

Mrs. Walcott as Mrt. Brown was, se she always is, full of vivacity and Intelligence. Tho most remarkable acting of the piece, however, is that of 8ignorMajeronl, who plays the part of the Count Carojac, and presents a portraiture that la life like and most striking. It is a disagreeable role, but one in which be nevertheless provoked many rounds of applause.

The other parts are oqually well taken. The piece is generously mounted and will undoubtedly run so orowdud houses through the weok. Haverlj's Brooklyn Tlioatrc. Among the tests of the merits of a well written piny which are applied with more or less anccess, probsbly tho best is the impression which the performance leaves on the minds of the cultured portion of the audience when the curtain falls on the last scene. A play may be written with all due regard to the requirements of dramatio art, such ss attention to the stage business, soenlc effects and special caste, snd to what Vincent Crummies sailed the "unities," snd yet it xnny fall to touch an nudlenco or to impress them aa a dramatic etory well told and which points its moral with effoct.

Tho majority of plays ore written simply to amuse, the minority to Instruct, but those which eater the happy medium field, and somhiss attractive ncenes with a obntrollng moral Influence, are exceptional productions. Among this latter class, liowevor, the domeitlo comedy drama illustrative of Kew England life, written by Mr. John Hauberton, and entitled VDeaeon Crankott," may justly be inolnded. Jt stands the test above referred to most successfully, for one rises from its performance with a better and kindlier feeling for one'a fellow mortals, and, moreover, firith satisfactory sensation which calls tor the enjoyment of a repetition of the play. "Deacon Crankott'i Is so cast in its characters as to give each part its proper repreeentative.

This alone is a merit of tho performance as given at Haverly'e Theatre last night, and when to this 1b added unusually pretty stage pictures, the result is a most oredltable success In every way. She story of "Deaoon Crankett," briefly told, iB a romantic one, and yet not of tho improbable kind too frequently seen on the etago. The Deacon himself is a bearty, genial specimen of the religious olass of Now Englanders. His religion is practioal In Its working and of the nature of Christ's teaching, aa held forth by Mr. Beaoher.

No Presbyterian bltternoss, Methodlsti cal cant or High Churoh superstition characterizes it. Moreover he wears his heart on his coat eloeve. This Is the elder hero of the play, admirably personated by Ben Maglnloy. The younger hero is a romantio American sailor, though his language somothlng of a dialect at times would not indicate It, who finds an at trastiva representative in Mr. Wheelock.

Then there is the heroine, who, though a true American girl, finds berself embarrassod by two lovors. This youDg lady very effectually and gracefully personated by Miss Helen Sedgwick. Next comes the villain of the drama, cot one of the stereotyped stage olass, bnt one who is not so bad ss ho seems. He, too, fills the bill admirably throughout, snd greatly aids in completing the stags Tjlcture. Laat, but not least, oomes Jfr.

Deacon Crank. eX. snd hers we hsve the oharsoter of a worthy New England housewife the "Ma" of a happy fsmlly olr aie inimitably performed by Miss Anns Ware, In make for the part, lu naturalness of action snd in the real tstio individuality given the oharactor, the performance la really one which shares the honors with the Deacon fclmssU. But to the story. Jot falls in love with 'SUanor, and ha ii bout to have an Important inter.

with her, when he aces her in the clasp of "that elty chap Gray." Then he goes off to foreign dimes, stnon the soene changes. Gray, an alleged forger and of happiness generally, Is thrown Into friendly Intercourse with Joe, who is seeking the rob Jber. He is taken ill, and is nursed by Gray, who bears an assumed ntm. The scene changes, and a ohsrmlng domostlc picture is presented. Gradually the mystery surrounding the Iivss of the young couple ts cleared np, and finally a happy denouement follows, in which tho banker father of Eleanor a capitally acted part by Harry Eytinge blesses the happy pair, and the Oia eon'n theory of helping a sinner to repentance being than punishing him first, finds a happy and Ouccesuful illustration.

The drama is not only admirably unformed throughout, but it Is beautifully placed Pon the stage, the set scenes in the first three sets lng attractive. Tho first BCebe last night Httie marred by the "go ao you please" move ent of the moon, bnt this was but a trifling defect. ueacon Crankett" ought to crowd Haverly'e this IcrowA in a oity like ours, which hse euoh a croof Kew Englanders (nit.
