Although it has been the custom with the Meadow Brook Hunt club for the past few years to hold two cross country runs on election day there was but one held Tuesday last. This, however, was by all odds the best and largest ever held by the club and crossed the roughest and most picturesque hunting country on Long Island. The weather was all that could be desired, and the warm breeze blowing across the Hempstead plains was just invigorating enough to lend renewed spirits and pluck to those in the saddle.

The hunt party assembled at the Meadow Brook club house at 1 P. where a luncheon was served, Albert Stevens, a member of the club, being the host. The run across country commenced at 3:30. James L. Kernochan and Mrs.

Atlolph Laiicnburg were the only women in the saddle. Both rode with unusual dash and vim and were among the first in at the finish. The scent, which was taken by the hounds near Old Wcstbury, led the pack In a westerly direction for five miles across the harbor hills and country seats of Stanley Mortimer and Kinsley Magoun. to Glen Head, thence in a northerly direction toward Glen Cove; from where the scent led toward Roslyn and to the country seat nf E. Willard Hoby.

where the kill occurred and the hunt party broke up. Several of the men who rode received falls, but beyond a few cuts anil bruises there was no injury done. A large party in four in hands, drags, traps, carts and folr lowed the hunt party across country by way of near by highways. One of the most conspicuous foru in hands was that or G. Frost of Brooklyn.

Mr. Frost, who handled the reins of four superb bays, drove out from Brooklyn to attend the meet. Amons those present were Mr. and Mrs. James L.

Rttirn (inirl From tho Staff a Election Nlffht. norce in the oare of its driver Is the great offender. Now, It the horse or the driver that Is at Clearly the driver. The damage done to trees by horses is Irreparable.

Why Is it permitted? Simply because the people do not exercise their rights. There Is a severe penalty for Injury to trees by animals. If the people would unite and assist one another In convicting the gul.ty. the law wnuM do the rest. At present a horse may gnaw a tree and be seen bv a "core passing along and still nothing will "be done The law under the penal code Is very severe and 1t Is certain to punish the guiltv if.

proof of the offense Is complete. It Is not quite as easy to bring an offender to Justice under the penal code It would be if an ordinance were passed by the common council fixing a penalty for such offense. The Tree Planting and Fountain society, appreciating this fact and desirous that the cause of so much and such serious injury to trees should be removed without severe punishment to the offender, asked the common council last spring to pasx an ordinance which would have the desired effect. The request of the society has not been compiled with. No action has been taken by that honorable bodv.

Now, it remains for the people to say whether they will quietly submit longer to suclr Injury to trees nr whether they will make use of the more severe laws existing and thereby compel obedience to them. There is another matter relating to trees that I will mention In this connection. It Is the prevailing custom of placing advertisements upon them, thereby disfiguring them. There is an ordinance which places a penally of sin to offense. The apathy of the people makes It pos plble for those so posting bills to escape punish SURROGATE'S NOTICES.
