The decease of an old and respected citizen of Brooklyn appeared under the obituary head yesterday. Mr. John Smith departed this life at an advanced age. He was well known as an unassuming, upright citizen, and a devout niciii her of the Methodist Chnrch. He had been at tached to the Sands street church for more than tll'ty years, during a great portion of which time he has been a trustee, and whenever huaucial aid was required he was ready to contribute with liberality.

His depiirture'will be greatly felt by the church, of which he was one of the staunchest pillars. Sir. Smith was One of the soldiers of 1812, who under command of Col. Nichols (still amongst the living, and vigorous in a green old age,) occupied Fort Greene in anticipation of an attack by the enemy. He was also a prominent nieinber of the Fire De purtnicnt, and as such was one of the originators of Kngine Co.

They were noticed, after an hour's struggling, by a propeller, which appeared afraid to approach, as they were then on the yhoals where the steamer Black Warrior was lost, some three miles front shore.

Capt. Hanker, of the steamer Ceres, on his rip to Rockaway, toward 12 o'clock, observed and bore down loward them as near as was safe, for the sailboat was 11 curing the breakers, where in a few minutes the exhausted men wouhfliave been overwhelmed.
