I thought 1 smelt metning use smote. There la no chimney, in our house, and we are obliged to cook outsiae. I naa torn down tne chimney, in making alterations. We used to oook by furnace, about twenty feet from the new building, in the open air. We had do fire in the furjnace after 3 o'clock.

We burned charcoal. She put tne Ore out with water, alter we naa done cooking. The new house and the one J. lived in were joined. When I smelt the smoke, I said to my wife, Ellen, get up.

I thought I smelt something like smoke. She said, there can be no smoke but she got up. She was in her night dress. I then got up, lit a candlefsearched around the room, found there was nothing there to oreate a smoke, and we went to bed again. I began to cough again, in two or three minutes.

I said to her, there must be a smoke in the houBe, or else I could not cough so. She said she would jump up, and light the candle a second time. I got up with her. I opened the door (she was Dehiud me), and as I did so, the smoke and flume rolled in, and set fire to my head. When she found my head on fire, she ran to a box, and got a woolen shawl, and wrapped it aronnd my head, and put out the fire.

After that, we both went into the bedroom where we slept, and then the fire was raging outside, in the hall way. My wife told me to run and save the child. I went into the room, and drew on my pants, and toek the child from the bed. I took her by the arms, and Btretched out of the window as far as I could, and let her drop down. This was the back window, which is two stories high.

After I dropped the child, I said, Ellen, I will let you drop, the same way. no said she you know the Btate I am in, a couple of steps will take me out of tbe door, look alter the child and God speed you; I pasBed out of the window; as I let myselt down I Beard a knock at the front ioor as if something fell; I thought it was my wife that fell; I told the firemen that my wile was inside and wanted to get in and they would not let me; the fhme was coming out of the front door then; I met an officer and he told me my wife was all right; I do not know the officer Dor the firemen; I was running round to try and find my wife and 1 met Mr. Wright and asked him had he seen my wife and he said no but I expect she is all right, consequently I was satisfied; Mr. Wright told me at 3 o'clock this morning that my wife was found, he said she waB lound inside my parlor door or underneath the front door in the cellar, the floor caved in; my wife, myself and ohild went to bed about half past eight o'clock. To a Juror.

I lived in the first house from the coiner ot Schenck street in Lafayette avenue; I do not know whether the corner house was on fire or not; I do not remember telling any one that I lived in the third house from the corner; I do not remember speaking to a man with a white fur cap on. Col. Jack does not Decline. For the Brooklyn Eagle. Supposing that the harmless wit of the Editor, about my declining the invitation to stand as a candidate for this Congresional District, could not mislead any person, I have not deemed it expedient to contradict this absurdity but finding many persons really misled upon this subject, I beg leave once for all to state, tbat having entered upon the canvass at the solicitation of the people of this city, without distinc Hon of party, lor the purpose of affording them a choice ol candidates between myself and others, who may be presented, 1 shall abide the decision of the people, at the polls, whether I shall represent them in. GowANCfl, Sept. 17 th. Me. Editor Our quiet little village was the scene of another one of those disgraceful prize fights early on Sabbath morning. Both combatants were from New York, attended by their friends.

They pummelled each other for an hoqr. Their names, as near as I conld ascertain, were Lord Turner and Hugh McLane, in which the latter received a severe drubbing. I merely wish to ask how muoh longer are we be disgraced by snob proceedings? I sincerely pray tbey may may both be arrested to stop Bnoh proceedings in future. The Highway Kobbert in President St. Yesterday, Joseph Jones, James MeGuire and a woman named Terry, the keeper of a boarding house in Pres dent street, were brought before Justice Blatchly on the charge of being implicated in the highway robbery in President street on Saturday night last.

The papers in the oase were transmitted to the District Attorney, and the matter will be laid before the Grand Jury now in session. Mr. Roberts, the man who was robbed, was held in $500 bail to appear as prosecuting witness. We would wish to call the attention of onr readers to a notice in this evening's paper, of a Children's Clothing Emporium to be opened on Wednesday, the 20th and we leel confident in recommending the lady who opens it to the patronage of the public, as it is what has been so long needed in our oity.
