For Twenty Years a Favorite in Madrid An Encounter at San Sebastian Which Abruptly Ended Uis Career as a Wicldcr of the Toledo Blade. Tho brilliant career of one of the most famous hull fiditerH of Madrid ha3 onrted. Salvador Sanohoz, bettor known as Frascuelo, has entered into private life suddenly. Ho lulled nis lam duii at one of the Sunday bull fifthts at San Sebastian a few days ago, writes a Madrid correspondent of the jPniladeWMa Times under date of October 5. Never had the Plaza do Toros of the city ueon so crowded.

People flocked hither from all parts of the north of Spain and from Southern Prance to witness the leave taking of this groat matador. Frascuelo entered the rinpr with his cuadrilla, or band of armed aids, at his heels, he himself being the central figure of the brilliant procession, erect, graceful as ever in his gaudy attire. His face alone bore traces of suffering, and his eye wandered almost mournfully over the ecene of many previous triumphs. Binginsr cheers from the spectators of all ranks showod him that his popularity waB aB great as of yore. Fransuelo is very little over 50.

He would have still been game for many a bull fight if his right hand had not been disabled by a wonnd received a few months ago. Since then ho has beon quite another man. He seemed to have a presentiment that his career was drawing to a close. Showing his swollen baud to a friend, he remarked sadly. "Once upon a time I thought I would die in tho ring on the horns of a Muira bull; but nlas! this scratch will oblige mo to give up my profession." Poor fellow, it does seem very hard for him to have to retire in the very prime of life and at the climax of his success He may bo bolioved when ho declares that he would sooner havo died in the Plaza de Toros before tho eyes of the crowds, whoso darling he has been for twenty ycara.

Indeed, tho forty scars that ho carries on his body show that he never feared to "risk his skin," as tho Spaniards say, in order to wrinsr applause from the public. Though the doctors say that Frascuelo will not loso his right hand, it is hard Mnes for him to know that he cannot any longer make use of it to handle the red cloak and his trusty Toledo blade. But this good right hand did not always pro Efirve him from horrible dangers. One of tho last of Frascuolo's narrow CBcapeB was when lie was caught in the Madrid ring and tossed again and again by an enraged Muira bull, amid a scene of unparalleled excitement, every spectator rising to his foot with horror at tho sight of the favorite, whom they all thought mortally wounded. Frascuelo was carried home on a stretcher, and so dense was tho orowd that followed him that mounted guards had to keep the people back, so that tho melancholy procoasion could pass through the street!) of Madrid to tho bull fighter's little home.

EYascnelo's homo is on the first floor of a respectable house on the square of Santo Domingo, in the heart of the capital. Thither, for several days after tho accident, flocked Spaniards of every station in life. On the list of callers that covered a littlo table at the foot of tho stairs the proudest grandeoB placed their names side by side with those of tho humblest admirers of the famous bull fighter. On the first day the king of Spain sent his lord high chamberlain to inquire and an aid do camp of Don Alfonso XII followed on each of the succeeding days until the medical bullotin announced that Salvador Sanchez was out of danger. It was my good fortune to be admitted into l1 rasouelo's house on this occasion.

A neat sory ant girl opened the door and ushered me into the parlor, a handsomely furnished room, decorated with many knickimcks and professional tro phies. Between tho two windows was hung a life sizo portrait of Frascuelo, a very good like jiesB, painted by one of our modern Spanish artists, who had succeeded admirably well in catch ine the expression of the strange cyoB of tho swarthy face of tho torero. Through the opon door of tho next room I caught a glimpse of I ras cuolo himself, lying in bed, his wife and two bull fighters sitting by his side. Senora de San chez was then, and is still, a very handsome woman tall, rather stout, but with a lovely com plexion and large, lustrous, dark Andalusian eyes. She was very well dressed and a long, clean apron showed that she took in earnest her part of devoted nurse to her stricken husband.

She did not allow the wounded man to speak, but hersolf answered all my questions. She appeared much moved, and tears started in her eyes when she spoke gratefully of the attention shown to her spouse by the thousands of Madrid citizens. Salvador Sanchez was not intended by his father to bo a bull fighter. Ho was tho son of poor parents and was apprenticed to an uphol sterer. Ho learned the trade, but when still a young man took a great fancy to tiie society of bull fighters.

Whenever he could afford it the boy went to the ring. He also studied the bulls in their wild state on the pasture grounds. never feared them. By degrees ho deserted the upholsterer's shop and devoted himself exclu sively to bull fighting. Young Salvador very soon began to attract attention by his agility and fearlessness and grew to be a favorito in tiie provincial bull rings, and later became known even in Madrid.

One day ho was called upon to replace a celebrated matador who had been killed in the ring, and after that he took rank next to Lagartijo anil the best toreros of the day. Then he married a beautiful young woman, of whom I have just spoken, and whoso mother and sisters still keen the largest and most prosperous fish stall in one of the Madrid mar kets. Frascuelo'fi children, who are fast growing up, look more like their mother than their father. He takes pride in giving them a good oduoation. He spends a great deal on his family and denies them no comfort or luxury.

His eldest daughter a beautiful girl, and his wifo havo jewelry and brilliants that can vio with those of ladies of rank. (treat bull fighters receivo so many presents that they can well bestow part of their treasures upon their family and followers. They generally keep for themselves, however, tho splendid rings that cover their fingers and beautiful studs of emeralds and diamonds that adorn their shirt fronts. Frascuelo is especially noted for his fondness of these trinkets and for tho caro ho takes in his attire. Frascuelo used to be a conspicuous figure at the corner of tho Puetra del Sol, the famous square of Madrid, lounging or standing with a group of toreros, listening to their gossip on the evo of some bull fight.

You could not call him a very handsome man, and atili there was something interesting in tho Gypsy east of his features, his wild, restless eyos, dark Olive skin, heavy eyebrows, bright red lips, sparkling white teeth and curly raven hair, now besprinkled with gray. Like all toreroB, he was often a guest of men of the higher classes who patronize bull lighting. Frascuelo always behaved well in the company of his bottom and seldom allowed himself to bo distanced in polite neBBor grandiloquent Spanish courtesy. It is an error to suppose that toreros are admitted into ladies' society, except in very fast sets; but foreign ladies havo sometimes, when passing through Spain, invited Frascuelo and La garti jo to their tablos. Men about town relate some very piquant stories of tho gallantry and high flown complimonts said on these occasions, especially by FraBcuelo to his hostesses, though they did not always catch the fnll moaning of the witty shafts aimed at them in the vernacular by Salvador Sanchez.
