During the fiercest of the gale of yesterday afternoon, about one o'clock, the upper of tho Liberiy pole, corner of Fourth and South 2d streets, E.

came down with a crash, falling across the first named sircet. On its way almo3t demolished a tree, but, very fortunateley did no other damage. A little girl had a very narrow es cape, and also a man with a passing horse and wagon but neither were iDjured, though extremely frightened. The pole had been erected over 13 years, and was one the old landmarks of Wiliinmsburgb, before it allied its fortunes' with Brooklyn. During the gale, the be'l rlnger in the Are tower, near the liberty pole, considered it unsafe to remain aloft, on account of tho rickety condition of the lower part of the structure.

It, however, stood the heaviest breath of Iho gale. The Steamship Sayan ijah Opens Fire on the Eastern District. Ycalc'dey oC.ernoon about 3 o'clock the occupants of No. 6 Souta Ninth, near Second street, JS were thrown into a stile of consternation by the arrival of a thirty two pound Wdlch came crashing through the southwe3t upper corner, anil tore its way down through the building, passing out easterly into an adjoininghouse on Secoi'd sircet, where it discontinued its joumey in a atoie room. The house first struck was occupied by Mr.

Augjst Thea kauf, whose family was extre cely terrified by the uoIsd and destruction of this strange visitor. Wnile they were searching for the ball, and comparing impressions with the people of the adjoining house, an officer all out of breath and psle with fear come up and explained the unusual occurrence. From his statement it appeared that during the afternoon a school of officers had been going through the customary gun practice, and forgetting that all the guns of the Savannah hud been loitded during the recent riot in New Yolk, applied the match to one, when the gun discharged with the above effect. Tae start'ed officers irslantly level'ed a glass in direction o'f the Eastern District, when, discovering the damage, tbey dispatched one of t' eir nu nber to ascertain if any lives had been, sacrificed to their gross carelessness. Fortunately the ba'lhad daamed property only, so that the school will veiy likely escape with only a laugh against them for tbeir stupidity.

9, E. started on an excursion to Florida Grove on board a steamer and barge. Unfortunately the stress of weather compelled them to put in at a lumber yard on Staten Island, where thev remained until the subsidence of the gale. At about five o'clock the boats started to return, and soonaftor a row was begun by some persons not connected with the company, during which a member of Hook and Ladder Co. No.

2, named Walenslcy was very severely handled, and after receiving a terrible black eye, and having his clothes pearly all torn off, was stowed away in the hold of the barge for safety. Growing out of this trouble a pretty general fight succeeded many scratches and bruises were bestowed by the rowdies. The ladles on board between terror at the storm, disappointment at not reaching the grove, aad sea sickness, a jd fright at the row, had a very unpleasan time, and the reputation of No. 9, suffered fully as much as any of the countenances of the excursionists. If firemen must make fistic appeals over theirpersonal and department differences, they surely can select a better time than when accompanied by those they desire to compliment by an invitation to a day of enjoyment.

The members of No. 9 should lose no time in attempting to explain why this disgraceful affair was allowed to aBsume the proportions of a riotous assemblage; surely there were a sufficient number of well disposed persons on board the barge to have put down the fighting at once, by promptly dropping the rowdy element overboard. GREGG WITH THE 1st AN I 3d BRIG ADES. A Severe Battle with 3,00 of Stuart's Rebel Cavalry, HEAVY LOSS OKTB0TH SIDES. The Enemy Withdraw, (Special Correspondence of the Philadelphia Inquirer.) IlKAD QlJABTEItS, 3D Bp.IOADB, 2d DlVISIOX, I SaEPitBEnsTOwN, Ya, July IS. General Gregg, witli the First and Third Brigades, leu Iioonboro', on the 14th, at 9 A. with Colonel McEntosh's command in front, and crossed the Potomac on a pontoon bridge at Harpers Ferry, at 5 P.

and encamped on Bolivar Heights, and picketed the roads aud approaches to the Ferry. At 0:30 A. 13th, the line of march was resumed, the Third Brigade in front, accompanied by Captain Eandall'3 battery, When our advance (First Maine cavalry) reached our outposts the rebel? deployed skirmishers, and a brisk skirmish took place, the well tried and gallant boys of the First Maine driving them back into Charlestown. After an engagement of two hours, Lieutenant Colonel Smith was ordered to recall bis skirmishers and return to tho Shepherdstown road and follow the column. liisciisuallics were one man wounded and one taken prisoner.

In the meantime Col. Gregg proceeded in the direction of Shepherdstown, with the Sixteenth Pennsylvania Cavalry in advance. They advanced about two miles, captured the rebel videttes, and dashed upon the reserve, capturing six. During the day, up to this writing, four P. we have captured twenty one prisoners, 'as many horses, two ambulances and teams, 4,000 pounds bacon, fifty barrels flour and eighty one rebel convalescents in hospitals.

The Sixteentli Pennsylvania alrj' lost one man, (Jos. Wood, company killed and two slightly wounded. Our forces are still in pursuit, and the full particulars cannot yet be given. 1Ieado.i;artf.i:s Tinan Brigade, Second Division Cavalrv Cocrs, July Nothing further of importance occurred yesterday. Our pickets were out four miles on the Winchester turnpike, and all the other roads leading to the town were stroi'gly picketed.

The drums in the rebel camps could be distinctly hoard in the direction of Smithtown by our outposts. An unsuccessful attempt to drive in oiir pickets was made on the Dam No. 4 road. Another attempt was made upon onr pickets quite early in the morning on the Westchester turnpike. They toredowuour barricade in the road, and after exchacging a few shots retired.

About 2 1'. II. they drove in our pickets. Fortunately, tin 1st had gone out on the turnpike foraging, uvul supported the squadron of the 10th New York on picket. They skirmishad and fell back upon a vcry strong position for defense, about a mile from town.

Here Colonel Gregg had the balance of his command and cannon in position, and suddenly chucked their advance. He had not over one thousand men and four pieces of artillery engaged, under Captain Kandall, First United Slates Artillery. The enemy had at least three thousand, and opened six guns upon us. Colonel Gregg dismounnad two thirds ot" his command aud priced them behind stone rences. hills, rock3 and trees.

It was Hie most stubborn and hotly contested cavalry battle 1 ever witnessed. The Uebels would charge the stone walls, yelling like so many demons: still our gallant boys stood as firm and as so many statutes, repelling every attnek, inlieting at oaeh repulse a most fearfnl punishment! The First Maine, Fourlh Pennsylvania Cavalry, Sixteenth Pennsylvania Cavalry and two squadrons of the Tenth New York, were the forces engaged. There is no discount on their bravery, and eulogy cannot do them justice. Colonel McKntosh's Brigade lay on the left of the line of battle, and he deployed a portion of hi6 coinmaRd to prevent a flank movement, but was not otherwise engaged. For ilvc hours the battle raged, raaiiy of the men firing from eighty to one hundred rounds.

dropped her dark veil hetween the contending foes, and for a short time nil was quiet. The liebel pickets, anxious to reacu lliir fripnds in 1 nwn. cnminoncpil niflrr.1 Hrli, nml I our skirmishers, who had not been recalled, opened a fire upon them all along the line. In a few moments the I rumbling of their artillery could be heard retiring, and i long before morning they had all left. Our ambulances, I puck train, Jtc, were sent to Harper's Ferry, and at 4 A.

the 17th, our forces were all withdrawn, and re turned to Harper's Ferry. The supply train of the First i Brigade went from Halltown to Shepherdstown and re turned in safety, after our forces had left. Ouroasualties i were seven killed, sixty four wounded, and forty two missing. LATEST FROM NEWBEBN. Nkwbkrn, N.
