July 0 Tbo trotting at this village on Wednesday was exceptionally fine Olid was largely attended.

The 1 summaries glvo the various results: 2:23 CLASS l'A Cl.VG. Lucre i Ulack Crook i i There was a big crowd of spectators at tha starting point of tbo Jamaica road raco yesterday am had tho day boon a pleasant ono it is uulto likely the wholo course would havo been lined with onlookers. Despite tho rain tho raco was a notable) 0110, because of tha tlmo made. Tho winner of tho time prize was C. Ford Sc eloy uf Bridgeport, who did tho twenty five miles In Tho fact that this time was made under such unfavorable conditions astonished everybody, and there was some skepticism as to whether the.

courso was fully twenty five miles long. It has recently boon however, and several wheelmen vouched for the fact yesterday that It was fully twenty live miles according to their cyclometers. Tho raco was won by a man hitherto unknown to tho bicycle world P. Bartels of Iiast Wllliston, L. I.

It will bo remembered that lust year Frank White first came into place is capably filled by George Shoch was hardly a breath of wind, and when the signal was given the yachts barely drifted over the line. There were sixty five of them In all, the biggest fleet to start in a race this season, and all of them tho pick of America's fast yachts. Tho light breezes that blew were from tho north, thus making two legs of tho triangle reaohes and the other a run, with Kennedy was hit on his pitching hand by Nichols yesterday, but from all apperancos, It was like a mosquito bite to the sturdy twirler. The Brooklyns open at Cincinnati to morrow, playing four games, ono of them Two Links IE 3 Getaway day at Sheepshead Bay attracted a crowd of nearly ten thousand race goers yesterday. The courso' was like a circular canal from the heavy rain, whllo the grass was slippery and was weighted down with water.

There were numerous scratches in consequence, but the racing was excellent. Four outsiders won, most of the odds on favorites being beaten. The P.ealization stakes, tho most valuable purse of the year, wero won by Bright Phoebus, owned by Mr. Hobart, tho young California millionaire, who thus starts on his turf career with enviable success. Mr.

Hobart purchased Bright Phoebus from Charlie Littlefield for $7,500. and a third interest in the Realization. Tho raco was a disappointment to the talent, which had made Keenan, Gideon Daly's colt, a hot favorite. There were seven starters in tbo big event, Keenan ruling on edds on first choice at 4 to 5. Tho winner was second choice at 7 to 2, Counter Tenor had few followers at 6 to 1 and the others from 10 to 15 to 1.

The dlstanco was one mile and five furlongs, the start being from the half mile post of tho Futurity course. Cromwell Jumped in front at tho start, setting a hot pace. They passed the stand with Cmmwnli 4 4 tv.ii. Lake Tho ByMl TlmO, postponed from the first trip. the game yesterday was easily won, or a reach as it started.

It Increased in force, also, klcl.iag up such a heavy soa that the small boats wero compelled to abandon tho rare, all but the flatties, which hung on and finished. Tho little cutter Pup plucklly attempted tho round, but as she reached the heavy water off the Dyker she was boarded by heavy seas and nearly swamped, so that Mr. Hallenbeck was compelled to put In shore, and was taken off by a boat from the Avoca villa. The catboat Edda D. had the most trying experience, however.

She Is at all times a wet boat, but in yesterday's heavy sea became badly waterlogged. After rounding the first mark she was blankoted by one of the big Iron steamboats. Instead of coming up In the wind, and filling away naturally, her helmsman, either because her water logged condition made It impossible, or through negligence, allowed her head to fall off. The instant the steamboat glided by tho wind struck her suddenly with tho force and effect of a squall, and she went over like a flash. Fortunately she was not heavily ballasted, and Mr.

Rurnmel managed to throw out his anchor. Those on board Hugh Fur gueson'8 Loster saw the accident, and Immediately gave up the race and proceeded to save the helpless crow who were shivering astrldo the boat. It was a big three hours' work to save the sails and boat, but eventually both were taken to shore, although everyone In both crews was wet to the skin. One of Mr. Simpkln's carrier pigeons, which was aboard the Edda was drowned, much to tho grief of the owner, who dived after It half a dozen times without avail.

Only four boats of the fourteen starters finished. They wero tho Gael and tho three flatties. Tho summaries: OLASS A SLOOPS AND COTTERS 1H FEET AND OVER. Elapncd Finish. Tlru.

Monday, August 5, will see the commencement of the International chess tournament at Hastings, England, which, according to all accounts, will be In every respect the greatest congress ever held. It Is stated on good authority that this gathering will include among many others every living winner of an international chess event, Steinitz, Glmsborg, Tarrasch, Tschigorin, Weiss, Blackburnc and Burn, to which "brilliant array of names must bo added that of Laskcr, the conqueror of Stcltiltz, and tho present holder of the world's championship. When the fun begins there should bo turned out some specimens of chess that will bring Joy to the soul of every devotee of tho game tho world over, and the man that succeeds In coming out on top will bo fully deserving of the great horr.rs he achieves. But what In this connection is of most Interest to lovers of chess hereabouts ib tho fact that Brooklyn will ranst likely be represented at tho meeting. After Anderson had been fielded out by Long, Shoch drove a long fly to deep right and settled on third base. He scored on Treadway's sharp grounder to Long.

For Brooklyn, Daly and Kennedy retired rapidly on grounders to Long and Nash. Griffin was again unable to solve Nichols' shoots and struck out. Duffy, Nash and Lowe led off in the fourth with successive base hits. Duffy scored. Tucker's sacrifice advanced both Nash and Lowe to third and second respectively.

Additional runs looked certain, but Bannon hit to Kennody, and Nash was caught between third and home. While this wan being done, Lowe took third and Bannon second. Ganzel rapped a hot one to Shoch, who made a pretty stop, retiring the side. In Brooklyn's half, Shlndle was thrown out at first, after a great stop Nash. Anderson beat a slow grounder to Long, Shoch singled and stole second. Tread way sent a line fly direct to McCarthy. Ed Ke. lrnev ever, He Defeats "Rockefeller for the Coney Island Gun Club Badge. After one of the finest trap shooting contests witnessed in many a day, Dr. Van Ord won the Hughes badge at the shoot of the Coney Island Rod and Gun club, at Dexter Park yesterday. It was a hard fight for twenty rounds, seven in the club match and thirteen in the shoot off, and Van Ord was forced to make a clean score in order to down his most persistent opponent, A.

E. Rockefeller, who kept him guessing up to the last round. All the men shot well, six members killing all their birds in the club match while not one missed more than two. A feature of the day was the successful attempt of Dr. Littlefield to kill twenty two out of twenty five clay birds on a wager.

William Hughes, the octogenarian pigeon shot, and Littlefield closed the day's sport with a match at live birds which was won by the veteran. Hugh McLaughlin was tho referee and John C. Du Fraine scorer. The scores: CLL'B SHOOT SEVEN LIVE BIP.DS. Name.
