there is more promise. The South Penn Oil Company opened one well 'which is producing 140 barrels day. The best showing conies from the Salem district, Harrison County, W. where the United States Oil Company drilled its No. 7 well, on the Williams' farm, and opened up a 300 barrel producer.

Shortly after it completed its No. 8 well and found this was good for 220 barrelu a day, with the indications that it would be a better producer than the No. 7. It is evident that the company has struck a rich spot. The Eclipse Oil Company found a fair producer at the rate of thirty to forty barters In the "Little Germany" district.

In the same section the South Penn Company llnlshed Its lest well on the Corbley farm, near the Alley Lewis farm, and found it good for 75 barrels. This Is a little In advance of developments and glvea promise of an extension of territory. As a rule, however, developments in the "Little Germany" district failed to come up to expectations. Operators are now looking for territory in Marlon and Wetzel counties, near Manning town. The South Penn Company lest well on the Cunningham farm in this section is still holding up at 100 barrels a day or better.

A number of other test wells are now t'nder way and something more definite as to the extent of this producing region will be known In the course of a month or two. In Ihe Indian Fork development, in Gilmer County, the test wells under way to determine If an extension of territory could be looked for, turned out to be dusters. Dusters followed the efforts of wildcatters in other sections. In the Lima district, local operations continue fairly strong, new wells proving average producers. The Planet Oil Company made an exceptional strike in Richmond County, wlien It struck a well that produced 100 barrels the first day, and continued at 40 or 50 barrels for some time after.

This well gives promise of opening up a good paying territory. Reports from Kentucky are a little more encouraging and one or two good producers have been opened cutslde of the Sunny Brook pool. The work to be done in this state during the year will do much to prove its probable siatus as an oil producing section. Refined petroleum closed unchanged at 7.20 in barrels and 4.65 In bulk in New York. Philadelphia prices were on a basis of 5 points lower.

Foreign quotations were unchanged. London 6 15 16d. per Imperial gallon; Antwerp 17 francs per 100 kilos, and Bremen 6.35 marks for 50 kilos. SPENCER TRASK BOOKLET. The banking and Stock Exchange firm of Spencer Trask 27 29 Pine street, Manhattan, announces the Issuance of the 1902 edition of "Statistical Tables," compiled and published annually.

This valuable compendium of statistical information Is no stranger to the Investing and financial world. Professional feeling on the floor of the Stock Exchange is confident and a majority apparently favors the idea that an advance of a week or more in duration is in order. The Chronicle computes the gross earnings of 61 roads for the fourth week of December, 1901, at $15,006,381, increase $844,346.

or 5.98 per 104 roads for month December, 1901, report $67,974,510, increase $3,266,063, or 5.05 per 52 roads lor first week 01 January, 1902, report $8,481,824, increase $733,136, or 9.4'6 per cent. President Truesdale of the Lackawanna is quoted as saying that there is absolutely nothing In the rumor that the capital stock of the company will be doubled or increased from $26,000,000 to $40,000,000. Representa I lives of both Vanderbilt and Lackawanna interests are also quoted as denying the I rumor that the former has secured control of the Lackawanna properly. President Lowry of the St. Paul.

Minne apolis and Sault Ste Marie Railroad Is I quoted as saying that there is no truth lu the rumors that James J. Hill is to merge I that property with other northwestern rail roads, with which he is prominently identl fled. I Chicago advices say that it may be stated 1 with a fair degree of accuracy that the local i money market has broken. For several days the principal banks in this city have been making especially good loans at VA per cent, However, the bulk of the commercial loans has held at 5 per cent. The lowering of the i price of call loans in New York yesterday to 4 per cent, proved to be the last straw in breaking the local rate.

A number of bankers stated yesterday thai, from now on they ex I pected the bulk of their loans would be at 4 per cent. A further easing than this is i not probable for some little time. Apart from the change in the Bank of Ger many's discount rale there Is little new in I the International money market. Sterling ex I change rules nominally Arm, principally as London is a nominal seller of stocks. It will be noticed that Ihe week's exports of wheat have been unusually large.

It is not impossible that the English bankers are inclined to draw a little more urgently from this side, in view of a probability of an early issue ot consols to defray war expenses. If such an issue is made the rumored amount of 22,000, 000 is wholly reasonable. It is not to be expected that there will be more than nominal subscriptions for them from America, although Exchequer bonds a year ago were taken largely. Conditions have altered materially since then and home investment money has belter opportunities here. STATE BANK IN TROUBLE.

Albany, Ga. An application for a temporary receiver has been filed by the creditors of the Commercial Bank of Albany. The bank did not open for business yesterday, and a posted notice stated that the bank had suspended payment pending the action of the state authorities. The liabilities of the hank are estimated at $12.1,000, with assets of $191,000 in bills receivable and real estate. The National Park Bank and the Mercantile National Bank are the New York correspondents of the institution.

Fulton. Mo. The Commercial Bank of Fulton was closed yesterday by the chief of the State Banking Department. It is said that Philip S. Adams, cashier of the bank, left Fulton Monday afternoon, ostensibly for St.

Louis, with $4,500 in gold currency to be. deposited in the Franklin Bank. His whereabouts is unknown. The president of the bank then called in the state bank chief. The bank was organized two years ago with $20,000 capital, and in November.

1901. had deposits of $32,800. It is believed depositors will be paid in full. Stockholders are expected to lose 50 per cent, of their invest meut. The Chase National Bank is the New York correspondent of the bank.

The story from the lower southwest district is becoming a very familiar one, with no new pool, no great strikes and small wells or dusters the rule almost everywhere, and the production slowly am surely' diminishing.

There Is nothing to indicate that matters will improve In this section or to WALL ABOUT WHOLESALE MARKET There was fair closing out of general produce at the stands and of farmers' loads of vegetables in the square yesterday afternoon. This morning a more quiet condition prevailed. The bears were correct in their predictions of a break in prices in the egg market and the range of two days ago is reduced fully 5 per cent. Butter was steady. The stilted prices for poultry this week was the cause of the carrying over of a considerable portion of the receipts of live stocks.

Dressed poultry was scarce and cleaned up better. Leaders believe that next week will bring a lower range of values. Meats remained as last reported following moderate dealings. Butter per pound Fancy Klgln, Juna cn amery, prints, HoVfca fic. Cheese, per pound b'ult cream, new, 12c.
