Jan. Jan. 3 3K 2M 2 2 1H 31 1 Mar. 12 1 Feb. 7 Feb $700 300 nom nom 70 270 400 nom nom 3,500 1.100 400 nom 3.000 nom ITS nom The dealings In wheat were again very light and largely professional.

Prices eased slightly during the morning, with very quiet cables, lack of foreign interest in either cash or futures, and In sympathy with coarse grain. The weather was milder in the Southwest, and cloudy, leading to some expectation of more snow, but is still very cold, the highest temperature being 30 above in the winter wheat states down to 8 below, and in the Northwest 12 to 26 below. Receipts were very small In the Northwest and show considerable decrease from last year. A little factor in the selling, perhaps, was the report which Is gaining considerable credence that Great Britain will take up the question of wheat duty at this session of Parliament, and will Impose a duty equal to 3c. to 6c.

per bushel on all grain which does not come from colonies or possessions. Such a duty would be much in favor of the exports of Manitoban wheat, and would stimulate production there material ly. It is not thought likely, however, that it would affect the Indian or Australian production very much. There is considerable discussion on the floor regarding the alleged relnspection of Manitoban wheat In bond, ir. order to obtain a New York certificate of inspection and such action is sharply deprecated.

If officially Indorsed it might become a serious matter. The news from abroad indicated unfavorable conditions in India, where the seeding season was unfavorable for wheat and tho acreage has been considerably reduced. Wheat was more active in the afternoon and lower, with some local realizing and lack of cash interest. The close was a little over the lowest. Exporters took 23 loads.

There was a quiet, lower market in corn. Selling was fairly good and the market acted as if the recent rise had run In the shorts, while dispatches from the West statod that the demand for cash corn was quite disappointing at the interior. The weather was also milder. The receipts, however, are very light, showing a marked decrease this week at Western points, and are only about 26: per cent, of the corresponding time last year. Reports from the Argentine were that there had been rains there, relieving the anxiety regarding the crop.

Corn was quiet In the afternoon and weaker, with further liquidation that was bid up at the close. Exporters reported no business. In oats there was a quiet, easier market, prices sympathizing with the decline in corn, showing a little undertone of heaviness. Demand West has not been very active, but receipts ha.ve fallen off very materially this week and are less than half of last year. Oats were quiet and weak in the afternoon with small speculative trade.

Trade in provisions was moderately active and prices were firmer, with rather light receipts of live hogs at Western points, and somewhat steadier live hog prices. Provisions closed quiet and heavy with grain. FUTURE MARKETS AT NEW YORK. (Reported by L. G.

COMPARISON OF CASH PRICES. Current cash prices at New York ot staple articles, compared with the figures of the corresponding days of last month and last London, February 5 Money was wanted In. the market to day in connection with the consols settlement and the payment of the West Australian loan. There was less pressure, however, and the tendency was toward easier rate's. Discounts were weak.

The possibility of a reduction of the Bank of England's rate of discount, to morrow was much discussed, the condition of the Paris rate of exchange providing an uncertain factor. Business on the Stock Exchange opened quietly and with a steady undertone. But there was a lack of animation throughout and prices generally drooped, owing to the absence of any definite result from the peace negotiations. Consols were easier. Colonial stocks were in fair demand.

Home Rails were neglected. Consols tor money, 94 7 16; consols for the account, 94. Money, 2a2M; per cent. Discount rates: Short bills. 2a2 15 16 per three months' bills, 2 per cent.

Gold premiums are quoted as follows: Buenos Ay res, 137.20; Madrid, 35; Lisbon, 30. Berlin, February 5 On the Boerse to day internationals were firm, especially Spanish Fours. Hungarian Crown rentes were largely bought owing to rumors that the Hungarian 4V4 per cent, rentes were being, converted. Transvaal rails were easier on Great Britain's reply to the communication ot the Dutch government in regard to peace in South Africa. Banks were Arm.

Mines fluctuated, closing firmer. Paris, February 5 Three per cent, rentes, 101 francs 20 centimes for the account. LONDON QUOTATIONS. TBTXST COMPANIES. year, are as follows BROADWAY AND BEDFORD AVE.
