IGGS' DETECTIVE AGENCY, Box 2,662, tf.Y. We regret to have to announce the death of BIr. F. W. Oonway, who succumbed to an attack of typhoid pneumonia, at his residence in Putnam avenue, ob Saturday night.

Though quite a young man, Mr. Conway had succeeded in making himBelf one or ibe most valued members of the Literary Soeiety of the Brooklyn Young Men's Christian Association, where his loss will be deeply felt. Aa an essayist he wielded a graceful and 'wile pen, and his contributions to the literary work of the Society wore alwaya marked by a aride and cultivated taste, and an ardent love of truth. Jt will be remembered that at the last anniversary meeting of the Society, Mr. Conway, in an excellent speech, vigorously advocated the doctrine that the duty a man owes his nation should be subordinate to the higher fluty he owes mankind.

Possessed of an amiable disposition, a warm and affectionate nature, and a liberal Christian spirit, he was greatly endeared to all whose privilege it was to know him and while hie death has caused the most profound sorrow, the memory of hip came will be cherished long and lovingly by a large and admiring circle of friends. lierreponti st. a ew Of U3 wont fishing at Port Hope, in oanaaa. ne put out about 300 salmon hooks from each boat, over a lino of about six miles, extending this along to oightecn miles and taking one third of tho hooka up on eaoi. day. 'well, the first couple of years we took to eacli boat about 15 aV, steady; tho third year it had fallen 1689 han 100 the fourth year it was down to 40 the next it was Hi low as 15, and in tho sixth year we couldn't catch a fish the ground.had been overflshod, and haa not, to tho present day, restockod itself. And mind, the Balmon became smaller in Bize as well aa in quantity.

Our catches at the beginning were of good sized family flsh, eight or fen pounds weight on an averago, but after tho first three years even a four pound fish waa looked upon as a big catch. At last we wero obliged to leave and hero comes another proof and we took up new ground at Coburg, several miles below. Here, again, we could hook in about 150 flsh to the boat for a year or two, but the figures dwindled down from year to year until the waters were abandoned SB entirely unprofitable. We had overflshod thom, and so cleaned them out." "But the Long Island people," I advanced, "can't believe that the cessation of tho pound fishing would compensate itself by any great increase." "Oh, they all think that at first, but if it was tried for a fow years, then they'd see tho difference. Now, I 'vo gono down to the vory bottom of this arrangement and figured it clean up to where I stand.

It's about twenty year since I quit fishing for myBolf I had nigh on to a hundred men at it then and began to pay attention to THIS PHOPAOATION BUSINESS, and I've had a chance to see Bomo of the rooults. When I first started the folks used to holler and hoot at me, and whon I'd go to certain fishing grounds some fellows would tilt up against mo with an armful of fish by way of an accident, you know and muas and ridicule me all they could. A Flatlandss farmer and HI Cltild A Fortune Disposed of by a Death. Captain Albert Emmons was a thrifty farmer, at Kings County, twenty years ago, and tnany of the old residanta there knew him intimately. He wae somewhat eccentric, and had a (Treat antipathy to matrimony, lie was quite wealthy and had an estate of one hundred aud sixty acres of land. In bis house 3ived a woman named Mrs. Van Dyck, whom he always represented to be his housekeeper.

About tho year 1S52. Mrs. Van Dyck gave birth to a female child. Emmons faced the community manfully and acknowledged the paternity. Ho was even fond of the Uttle child, and provMed for it handsomely.

It is not known that he ever married Mrs. VanDyck, and although she survived him, never made pretension that they hid been bound in wedlock. She cared for him with all the tenderness ot a true wife, and there are those living who respect her for it. Emmons left a will bequeathing all his property to the child, and proiided that if Bhe died with 3eal issue, it should descend to her children. Should she die without issue, the property was to be divided between his nephews and nieces.

The child grew up to Le a line looting lady, and no stigma was ever asso iat jd with her name. She had many EUitors, and last October became lietrothed to the son of a wealthy fanner of New Lots. It was said that they were aoon to be married. In January she was taken sick, and the phy Nassau st, one flight by tho day or week. Pleaso call at 2: of stairs, front rooms.

Meeting of the Directors Concerning tbe Ice on tne Hirer A Series ot lie solutions Inviting; Editors to 'Sake Hold of the Helm. The Directors of tho Union Ferry Company held a meeting this morning which wxe characterized by much pecularity and latent sarcasm. It was real funny to see them crack their jobea and rb their venerable palms as they looked out upra the ice blocked river and the shivering public that filled the ferry house waiting for a passage. That the delayed travelers were in everything but good humor did not in the slightest degree detract from the high Bpirits of the Directors. The occasion of the meeting was an editorial published in the Journal" Commerce on Satnrday, complaining of the indifference exhibited by the Ferry Company to the great inconvenienco imposed upon the public consequent upon the stoppage of navigation between the two cities.

When the Directors met, tho President stated briefly the object of their gathering and then proceeded to read as follows from the newspaper named THE BROOKLYN PEBItlKS. There roust bo a change in the management of the Brooklyn ferries. It will be several years, at the best, before the Bridge will be hnisked, and in the meantime thr; throng of people who are obliged to pass daily between New York and Brooklyn need and must have a more efficient conduct of the only available means of transit. It is a notorious feet that there is no proper supervision of the. ferry operations.

During all the ice blockade which has interrupted tho travel eo seriously, there no person with intelligence, energy and authority at any one of the crossings under charge of tho Union Ferry Company. We know that man cannot control the elementa, but he can work his way, in ppite of seeming obstacles, where pluck and vigor are united to ekill and experience in the 70R SALE HOUSE AT A BARGAIN Baltic at, between Henry and Clinton, the 8 Btory iok dwelling. 25x45x100 all improvements; good order throughout owner must soil. On general principles, and as the sworn foe of over fishing Jnst as John B. Gough is of tho once familiar rum (lend Mr. Green is in favor of tho restrictive law; but of the absolute necessity for it in this instance, or of the oztent to which the inshore population is a loBer by the inlet fishing, be furnished no data of appreciable force. For this class or information correspondent sought elsewhere, arter thanking Mr, Green for his instructive interview, and 108 OTICE THE SPECIAL COMMITTEE ON EXfiTSR xH meet in. Common Council BOO P.iinsv A Ash 10X4 boat, to relieve the anxiety of tho crowd, to order.coun Eel, or advise the operators, or to manifest in any manner the least personal interest in the euccesalul working of the Company'B franchise.

The thoory is, we believe, that Mr. Cyrus P. Smith is tbe managing director, having sole charge of tho details of conducting the enterprise. If this gontleman was ever competent for a task of this magnitude, it is an indisputable fact that he iB not now equal to it. He is advanced in years and infirm in health, and without that vigor, energy and good judgment which the supervision requires.

The general rule it, we are informed, that the boats are to be started from either side once in so many minutes, unless the ice or fog shall Interfere. No provision is made in the presence of these difficulties. At the very moment when good management and intelligent supervision are most needed, there is none of it, the rules themselves being then wholly inoperative. The pilots are then left to run the boats as best they may. We know that it will be said the pilots hive the most undoubted skill, and therefore it ia not wiae at auch times for landsmen to interfere.

But we have found that experts in any profession need a master quite as much as unskilled operatives. No carpenter, or painter, or plumber, or mason ever executed a job in any man's house to the satisfaction of its owner without the constant supervision of ono interested in its execution. We do not now spesk of ice boats and other expedients for broaking up the heavy floe of ice and dislodging the bridges that block the passage. These the directors ought to provide, and must provide, if the ferries axe not to Ue helplessly idle a part of the time during every severe Winter. Bnt apart from tbia, an intelligent oversight of the ferry operations by a competent person armed with sufficient authority and stationed at each of the great ferries would do away with more than half the present detention and by a manifestation of interest on the part of the management would go far to prevent disquiet, and take the sung out of the popular complaints which aro now founded in reason and justice.

We hope the Brooklyn press, which is even more In tereeted than we on thie side of the water, will ventilate this subject and lend their powerful aid to the needed noat; table eioellent.
