Andrew Jackson, an engineer, aged 30, find who. resided at No. 228 Nineteenth street, South Brooklyn, died on Wednesday morning, of hydrophobia. 'Two months ago he was bitten on the lower lip by a Spitz dog, but took no especial notice of it, as the dog was in good health and the result of the bite a mere scratch. The deceased wns advised to havo the dog shot, but the scratch was so insignificant that ha refused to comply with the request.

Tho first symptom of tho fatal disease appeared tm Friday last, when Jackson experienced a revulsion for liquids, and was unable to swallow water, but at this time he bad no pain or delirium, nor even did he experience any fever. At this time, however. Dr. Henry N. Bead, of 549 Henry street, was was called in, and he tried the boat known remedies, but without avail.

On Monday last a violent fever set in, but although the patient had sovcro and recurring fits, he was not violent until Tuesday night, when he experienced the most dreadful and agonizing paroxysms. These lasted all through tho night, and increased iu their violence until noon on Wednesday, when the patient was utterly exhausted, and died without a struggle. Talk about your professional games, indeed," exclaimed an enthmdastlo amateur yesterday afternoon, I'd like to see a more exciting or better played match than thiB." Of course he referred to the game whioh had just been endod on the Capitollne Sounds, in whioh the contestant were the represen amateur nines of New York and Brooklyn, the Flyaway and Chelsea club teams.

The Interest taken In tSe meeting waa such aa to occasion the largest attendance of spectators seen at the Capitollne grounds this season, and tbe rivalry between the twojiines.with the certainty that both aides would strivo thelrbost to win for the credit of their respective clubs, greatly added to tUo exoitement of tho contest. The weather was a little threatening, and rain did fall during tho game, but the nine innings were eventually played to a close. The fleid was not In good condition, nor wero the lines of batsmen or pitchers' positions as the rules require. But these drawbacks will be remedied in futuro games betwoon leading nines. Both Bides ware too anxious about tho result to ploy as coolly as they otherwise would have done, bat when they got down to their work this oioited feeling wore off and they played liko veterans.

There' was some difficulty in regard to tho choice of an umpire, and it waa 4 P. M. before play W03 called. Clack, of the Atiantfcs, being finally chosen to act, and he discharged the duties very satisfactorily, except, of oourse, in the opinion of the defeated nine. Tho Cholseaa took the initiatory at the bat, and though Cossldy got in a base hit, the good fielding of Jally, Gllllpana and Moore closed the inning without a run.

The Flyaways also made a base hit bnt nothing more, as Clare's sharp play behind the bat nipped a run in tbe bud. This was a good beginning, and a close content was now expected. In the second Inning the Chelseaa took advantage of some loose fielding by the Flyaways to get in three runs on a single base hit, and at once Chelsea etock rose to par with some offers of a premium. On the other aide, however, the Now Yorkers rallied with good etloct at the bat, and they had tied the Chelsea score, when a fall of rain necessitated a temporary postponement, and "chin music" prevailed at the club nouse for the next ten minutes. The shower then oeaeed and play was resumed, and the Flyaways etill further improved their position by taking advantage of errors caused by the slippery condition of the field and the ball to add three more runs to their score, making six scored and but one earned before the innings play endeu, the ten who went to the bat making fire base hits, Clare finally putting tho aide out.

This left the score, at the close of the second inning, at to 3 in favor of New York, and now tho Flyaways had the call in tho market. It was now an uphill fight for the Chclseas, and manfully did they face the music, tho necessity for extra work onlv loading to improved play. In tho third inning, wild pitching by Fallon, and errors behind the bat. led to the Chelseas adding a run to their score, Shanloy making a pretty oatch on the out field. On tbe other side, though Norton hit for three bases, a blank was drawn, Doyvr, Rule, and W.

West putting tho side out. Quinn was properly decided out for overrunning first base, in a way which deprived him from the exemption from bolng put out on returning to the base, ho trying to make second baso instead of keeping straight on in overrunning the base. In tho fourth inning, both aides scored blanks. Doyvr showing sharp play in his position, whllo tho pitching on both sides was effective, Rule, however, displaying the most strategy in his delivery. In the fifth inning the Chelseas added a Bingle to their score, by the good batting of the brothers West, and their skillful base running, something that fine player Billy West excels in.

ThiB left tho totalB at 0 to 8 only and the gamo in a very interesting position as the Cnelscas were sturdily disputing every inch of ground and gradually gaining on their adversaries. IfovirlUiinth. John gooB to busi Jane Shields began an action for dower against the executors of Henry Shields, deceased, alleging that she was married to Mr.

Shields thirty years ago and that he quitted her and formed a connection with a woman in New York, who passed aa hta wife, Tho executors of Mr. Shields began proceedings against John Jacobson, to compel him to take title to a place of real estate alleged to have been pnrohased by him from them, his objection being that Jane Shields' dower suit threw a olond on the property. The proceedings against Jacobson were begun and sent to a referee within seven days, and Jane Shields was subpenaed as a witness and closely examined touching her life subee sequent to her alleged desertion. By her counsel's advice she refused to attend a second sitting, and was served with an order to show cause why she Bhould not be punished for contempt. Her connael, thereupon alleged that the suit against Jacobson had been begun for tho solo object of securing Jane Shields' testimony, to bo used againBt her on the trial ot her euit for dower, and that the proceedings wero bogus and sham.

Her counsel presented the counsel of the executors with an affidavit setting forth that the proceedings were in good faith, but they declined to sign it. Judge Pratt thereupon sent tho matter to' a referee to take tho testimony of the executor' counsel. ThiB morning Jane Shields' counsol appeared in the Supreme Court, Special Term, before Justloe Pratt, to make a motion to stay the suit against Jacobson, and to call executors' counsel to account for instituting the alleged bogUB proceedings. The matter wont over until Tuesday. It is said that when the motion is heard it will be shown that Jane Shields went by her maiden name of Valentine and signed legal documents in that way, and that after her alleged desertion she was married to a man named Brown, went by his name, and bore him children.

How this will aff oot the main question aa to her claim for dower remains to be seen, For Mrs. Shields, ex Judge A. H. Dailey for tho executors, Geo, C. Blank for John Jacobson, S.

The prosecution here rested. THE DEFENSE. Gen. Tracy then made a motion asking the Court to direct an acquittal on the evidence. He Bald the accused was jointly indicted with her husband, upon this charge, and there were two questions that he desired to discuss.

The question was whether the wifo oould be convicted of a crime committed jointly with her husband, it is generaUy supposed that when the wife acta in the presonce of the husband, she acts under hiB coercion. The question is, whether the coercion is presumed to extend to and cover the crime of murder. There are, in fact, no deciBiona in the books upon that point. The cases upon which the exceptions are based are in elementary writers, and are cited by Hawkins. Gen.

Tracy then proceeded to disouBa the grade of offense upon which the exception was generally Bupposed to bear. Nowhere are any adjudicated cases that recognize any distinction as to grade, and the tendency of all the authorities refer to all crimes committed by the wife in the presenoe of her husband. General Tracy But the trouble with this case is that there is proof that the husband was present and that tho wifo was not. General Tracy thon proceeded to quote from the testimony of Mrs.

Kipp, who testified that at 1 o'clock in tho afternoon she heard a noise liko that of a heaTy body being thrown upon tho floor, and heard a woman's voice saying it 1b mine," and then heard a man's voice Baying "stand back, you," and shortly after saw Merrigan go out. There Is positive evidence that a man was present. There is also evidence of Mrs. Kipp that Merrigan was helping his wifo move the furniture the next day. Coe also testified that he heard tho sound as of a fight.

There is also evidence that the deceased was a largo and powerful woman in full vigor. There is also evidence that Bhe was put upon the bed before life was extinct. Gen. Tracy argued that all the circumstances of the case were against the theory that the accused had committed the deed, even if it was a deed of violence, and that it was committed in tho presence of the husband and that the voice heard waa that of the wife pleading for her friend. The rnle of law applicable to the faots was then quoted.

Q. li. Peabody, co proprietor of the United States Hotel, at Water and Fulton streets, Hew York, rotates a performance in his houBe on Sunday night last, which may be considered as remarkable even for the Brooklyn police. On that night a Mr. Codden came to his hotel and engaged lodging and was sent opto a room on one of the upper floors.

Ab a connecting link merely, and with no invidious intent, it ought to be mentioned that the lodger was in that odoriferous condition whioh plainly indicated that he had broken a bottle or two with friend, but waa quite able to pick out the steps of a stairway. After looking hiB door on tho inside, he retired lo a profound slumber, which was undisturbed by the foot that a lumbering special detective of Brooklyn was fumbling about his bedside and under his pillow. While thus slumbering two individuals, one a olerk in a Broad street store, and the other, since ascertained to be Mr. Peter Convery, a special policeman of this city, whose ''Bpeolaltrt' appears to be to watoh the church of Father O'Beilly while in procesB of building, oame into tho office and inquired for Mr. Cadecn, eay fn were friends of hie.
