General Meade and General Humphreys, Chief ef Staff, arrived this afternoon from the front, and are in town night. Speculation is busy concerning the object of visit, 8nd some wiseacres have it that Meade has relieved and ordered to Washington because he to attack Lee, as ordered several days ago. In view of some are already canvassing who will hiB Bucceesor. Generals Warreo, Sedgwick, Hancock Sykes Lave been named. There is reacon to believe sources well informed, that the reports of Meade'B removed are without foundations, and the object his visit is to consult with the President coneernin" Army of the Potomac.

He will leave in the mornin" tne Army. THE AEMV OF THE TOTOIIAC. P.eports from the Army of the Potomac represent all to day. J0S KEB1DEST. UDaS A blOBOU. SECOND EDITION. EAGLE OFFICE, THREE P. The Progress of the TrTar.

It is intimated that General Meade has orders to pur Lee's army and force him to give battle if such a thing is possible. Tie latter has retreated tothe Enpi dan, and it iBsaid that he will seek safety in his entrench ments aid send two corps to reinforce Bragg. It is cer tain that there is an important movement on foot, and it equally certain that General Meade is being largely reinforced from different quarters. General Grant has taken command of the Department the Mississippi, and he is now at tho head of an army leaBt two hundred thousand men. He arrived at StevenBon, Alabama, yesterday from Nashville, on his way to Chattanooga, and there met General Eosecrans route from Chattanooga to Nashville.

Both were the gueBts of General Hooker, who is in command If a column at that place. There is no doubt that the hero Of Vicksburg will in due course of time win new laurels by wiping put the defeat of Chickamauga, and confining the rebel territory to somewhat narrow limits. The semi official organ of the War Department pub: liBbes what it callB astounding developments in regard the removal of General Eesecrans, one of which is to the effect that he fled from the battle fleld during the criBis and reported to the officers at Chattanooga that the day was lost, and that subsequently, through opium, he became insensible. These charges, if true, are most unfortunate, as the name of Bosecrans was a talisman o( immense weight. HEAD QUARTERS 52d REGIMENT, N.

The circumstances are detailed as follows: The lady, whose name is Mrs. Anna Zeist, has been for some years periodically attacked with fits of mental abberation, and during the continuance of them evinced a strong desire to take her own life. Her friends, therefore, have had her closely watched until recently, when, as she appeared more continuously ration al she was allowed larger liberty. Yesterday the deceased made an excuse of business in New York, and as the day was fine it was believed a trip to the city would be beneficial. Accordingly she went.

This morning she was found dead in her room, with a glass near her containing a portion of dissolved French green, a poison. It is supposed that the deceased purchased this article yesterday. Mrs. Zeist is very respectably connected and leaves a son of 12 years of age. Her mental malady is believed to have been hereditary.

Teaterday afternoon a very respectable looking woman, named Mrs. Cunningham was brought before Justice Ferry, on the complaint of a very nervous old lady named Mrs; Tryon, who charged her with having committed an assault upon her. The old lady was accompanied by two of her daughters, and a lawyer named Cowenhoven, while' the accused had about half a dozen female friends to prove her innocence. The evidence went to show that the parties, who live in adjoining houses in. Tallman street, had a misunderstanding some time ainoe, in consequence of which bad leeling existed between them.

On Wednesday Mrs. Cunningham was purchasing me vegetables from a peddler's wagon, ad was in the act of paying him when Mrs. Tryon came along with a pail of water from the hydrant, and without saying as much as by your leave, shoved between Mrs. Cunningham and the vegetable merchant, spilling some or the water on Mrs. dress.

Mrs. C. caught her by the shoulder and gave her a shake. The old lady screamed, which brought out her daughters, and a wordy war ensued which lasted for some time. After the prosecution reBted their case, the counsel for the defence called Bridget Powell, a stout, good natured looking woman, with apair of mischievous looklngblaek eyes, who proceeded with the utmost volubility to tell the Court that she bbw the whole transaction from her window, which she had been washing at the time, and iimt ihn fault was all on the side of Mrs.

Trvon. Mr. Cowenhoven, counsel for the prosecntion, then proceeded to cross question her, and the following dialogue ensued: Lawyer Are you a married or single woman? Witness I don't think it is any of your businoss whether I am married or single; that has nothing to do wlih this case. Lawyer How far was the cart from the sidewalk when this affair took place? Witness (tmiling mischievously) Well I don't think it is necessary for you to ask me that question, you were down there yesterday yourself and you took a good survey of the position and you know all about it; I saw you from my window. Why man, if you had asked me I'd have lent you my Bhawl to measure it.

Lawyer How long had you been washing your windows before thir affair took place Witness (to the Court) Has this man any right, your honor, to ask me about my dome stic affairs; has it any reference to this case whether I was a year or a day wathing my windows Justice Perry (blandly These lawyers have a habit of asking impertinent questions sometimes. Witness (looking straight at tbe lawyer) Yes, these small men are generally very fussy. (Lawyer winced.) lawyer (recovering) What was the name of the pedlar who was selling the vegetables 1 Witness His number is 101), and I guess if you will 4ake the trouble to step into the Hock Inspector's ofilce you will find his name. Witness Weil, now, I'll leuyuu, loiimuuoucmiuuo 'between Charles and Pearl; the hydrant is towards Charles, and the wagon was standing In the middle of tbe street the man was next to the wagon, and Mrs. Tryon passed between them, and Mrs. Cunuingham shooK ner whb me nanu mui wun uu iu v.iwn tuB archly at the lawyer) now, can you tell me what hand it was (Great laughter.) The lawyer baa by thia time got very red in the face, the Court was with laughicr, and the witness was allowed to retire. The case waB finally dismissed.

Nassau vs. Atlantic. The Nassaus had another fine day for their fourth game yesterday, their opponents being the Atlantlcs, the match resulting in the success of the old champions by a scoro of IS to 18 in a well played game of seven innings, darkness putting a Btop tne play before the completion of the eighth innings. The score of the Nassaus was IS at the close of their eighth innings. The contest was a very good one throughout, but the Nassaus did not field up to their mark in the previous matches, although they played finely in a majority of the innings, their catching and throwing being excellent.

Henry's pitching bothered the Atlantics exceedingly, every man of their nine having strikes called on him in the course of the game. Smith and Crane both went out strikes. The fact is, the Atlantics have this season had no club trouble them so much to defeat, except the Eckforda, as did the collegians. The attendance of spectators was quite numerous, although very little publicity was given to the match. The Atlantics bad all of their nine out except Start and Sprague, the latter not having been a memberof the club long enough to play.

He will pitch in the game on Monday next, however. The Nassaus went to the bat first, Bcoring one run to the Atlantics four. By the close the third innings, their score stood 4 to the Atlantic's the latter drawing a blank in their third innings through the fine fielding of Henry and Condlt in catching foul balls. In the fourth innings the Nassaus scored juns, thereby taking a decided lead by a score of 9 to which by the close of theaixth innings was increased the totals of 18 to 7. In the seventh innings, however, the Nassaus brought their score up even, 18 to 18, but in the seventh inning of the Atlantics they added 5 runs to their score, the totals at the close being 18 to IS.

In the fifth Inning Rankin of the Nassau made a beautiful 'double play from a splendid fiy catch, on which he put out Chapman and Price, a round of applause greeting the tkllful performance. In fact the general play of the Nassaus was excellent throughout, their errors msinly reBulting from the rough character of the ground. On the part of the Atlantics, OUver'B fine fielding, Crane's base play and fly catching, and Pearce's catching were the most noticeable instances of good fielding. Smith also played in bis usual Btyle, both at third base and behind. Pratt and Chapman's pitching, too, was very effective.

In batting Pearce took the lead on the Atlantic aide, Crane marking his score with a clean home run from a splendid hit to centre field. Chapman also made a fine hit in his scoro. Halsey led the score on the Nassau side. This match closed the series played by the Nassau, the mfjority of tbem reluming to college to day. They have done wbat no other club has done that has ever visited tbe Metropolis before, won three out of four guinea with ciuds.
