FROM WASHINGTON. Butler on "JTewspapcr Iflon" Gonerally1 On tbo New "STork limes Specially Butler as a Ncwsjiapcr Topic Specie IE esuuiption The Cuban FrobleW BOTIiEB OH "NBWBPAra iB MEN" OENEBALT. Washington, March Butler has been so worried and annoyod since bis expreBBlon of contempt for the newspapers that ho took tho trouble tho other day to set himself right in a letter to a member of the press in thlacltf. Ho says when he referred to "newspaper jnennhe had view only "those who get a precarious living by hanging around this city and writing lies to their newswapera." He goes on to speak severely of that class, who, besides writing lies about Mm and other people, "sponge their living out of tho hotels because they claim to bo newspapor men, sponge their rides on the cars because thoy claim to be newspaper men, Bponge their washerwoman's bills because they olaim to be newspaper men." tt was to these and their hostility, he now says, he meant to avowals superiority From general denunciation Butler passes to particulars end pronounces his opinion ON THE MEW YORK TIMES SPECIALLY. He callB attention to the alloged facts that tho Times advertised at a dollar a lice cadetships for sale, and that tho "tempter of ffhitlemoro, tho devil that presented tho apple to him, was a correspondent of that same Times." Going beyond the defensive on the cadet ship question, Butler assumes tljp offensive, and deliv ers this direct wow: "island ready to prove that ma correspondent of that same New York Times was using his position to speculate in gold and stocks, and using the telegraph for that purpoeo as a dead head.

I think this would have justified me in speaking much mora broadly of the newspaper press than I have." Whs does not Butler prove it then, instead of standing ready to do bo? Butler says he knows one newspaper correspondent who is a gentleman. He represents tho samo district as Butler, It is needless to add that he supports Butler, BOTLEB. AS A NEWSPAPER TOPIC. Butler says the newspaper men meditated a novel and terrible revenge. He learned from a western correspondent that thoy contemplated compassing bis annihilation by never mentioning his namo in their dispatches.

Butler declares ho doesn't mind this. If tho newspapers can stand it he thinks ho can. Bnt ho does not believe some of the former would survive such a policy, as their articles about him are their chief stock in trade. SPECIE. The recent downfall of gold and the example set in other places ore having their offoct in thiB city.

Some of our principal storekeepers are making chmgo with silver. But tho rare coins are not yetvcry plentiful, and aro much sought after as curiosities. THE CUBAN PBOBLEM is still unsolved by the Houso Foroign Banks has his committee men hard at work on it twice a week. Yesterday he submitted to them a long state ment on affairs in Cuba. Tho Junta's agents here still hope that the Committee and the House will yet bo brought to take action that shall unpleasantly interrupt tho carnival now gaily going on in Havana.

Peconio. Fi'oru Bupcrt's JjMiul The New Govern ment. St. Paul, March 8. A late letter from Pembina states that the last num.

ber of the Xew Nation containing information that it was deemed advisable to bo witheld from tho public was suppressed. The Scotch and nearly oil of thoJEnglish half breeds rofused to join the revolution against tho Provisional Government, and only furnished provisions, because compelled to do so. Commissioners to treat with Canada arc on their way East. Ono Geddy, a deserter from Eiell's forces was captured, tried and found guilty. Afterwards he was taken to a place not designated, aud on return of tho offlcors in whoso com pany he left, it was reported that he had been executed.

Tho letter states further that there i3 now no oppositicu iu the, territory to Riell's government, and thnthois stronger and belter sustained than over before. Prize Fighting: to be Suppressed, in Iowa, Chicago, March 8. In tho Iowa Legislature yesterday a bill was passed for Iho suppression of prize fighting. Concoud, N. March 8. It is a splendid day hero, and tho voto will be quito heavy. The Democrats in this Senatorial district aro voting for Mr. Craw, tho Labor Iteform candidate for Senator, und the chances are in favor of bis election, considering the fact that he is receiving considerable support from Uopublicans, particularly thosa who aro in favor of tho Concord and Rochester railroad.

French, the Kepublican candidate, will lose because he is op poacd to the interest of Concord in this respect. Iu tho First, Second, and Third Wards the Democrats aro running a straight ticket for Ward offices. In tho Fourth, Fifth, Sixth and Seventh Wards they have virtually worked with tho labor reformers. It looks as if they would carry tho Soventh Ward. Tho candidates for Mayor are Jones, Republican, and Irarmington, Democrat.

The latter is getting a number of loading Kepublican votes. THE MURDER TRIALS. There are now three prisoners in the Kings County Jail under chargo of murder. The first is OWEN HAND, who was sentenced in tho lattor part of last year, but reprieved iu order to allow of an application being mado for a new trial. This motion resulted in a denial, and tho prisoner was to havo been brought before thoi present term of tbo Court of Oyer and Terminor for Bcntcnco, but bis counsel havo resolved, tomakoanothor effort on his behalf, and thoy are sanguine of getting the caso reviewed in tho Court of Appeals.

EDWIN PEBEY is also in jail, having failed to proenro bail in tho largo amount of $20,000, fixed by the Judge in granting tho application to admit him to bail. His counsel yesterday offered to proceed to a third trial at an early day, but the District Attorney declines for the present to try tho case over again. WILLIAM OHAMBEHS, the murderer of Mr. Voorheos, has beon sane enough to select the Bamo eminent criminal advocate who ap pcared for Perry on both trials, and the defense to bo mado for him is that of insanity. In Court yesterday, Mr.

Spencer mado an application for tho postponement of this trial in order to fetch evidsnce from Europe He BBid that he had not been definitely engaged iu the caso until Sunday, when he had an interview with Chambers. He was entirely satisfied that some time would bo required to properly prepare the defense. Ho had been informed that the prisoner's mother had died in lunatic asylum In Ireland, and if this were truo it ought to bo proved. His opinion was, however, that he could nof get ready properly to defend this unfortunate man before the next term of tho Court, which meets in April. That an estimable citizen bad boon killed, and that this man perpetrated the act, was beyond question; but it was gravely asserted by hia friends that at tUO timo of the killing he waB not re gponsiblo lot his actions.

Where a defense of that importance was in good faith interposed, it seemed that a few weeks shOllW be givon in 9 matter of snob vital importance both to tho community nilf n. the increaeod facilities for communication, he had no doubt that by the first or second week in April ho could properly prepare the case. District Attorney Morris said ho was in readiness to proceed at any time, Ho had supposed that the case would bo sot down for week. Judge Gilbert postponed tho case until Wednesday morning, when a motion of Mr. Spencer for further postponement iVli1 be heard.

Fees for Funeral Services. To the Editot of the Brooklyn Eagle: Can you not find, space for the insertion of the following which you must acknowledge has two great excellencies truth and brevity in tho columns of your public spirited paper It is reported on reliable authority that a clorgyman, resident in Philadelphia after conducting a luneral, lately actually received a noto of thanks Inclosing small fee. Wo mention tho circumstance to call attention to its rarity. Tho usual way in which the parson is treated is this He is called upon abruptly while composing Bermon to offlciato at tho funeral, never having been consulted as to the hour which would suit him best. At the service he must make an address which will bo severely criticised as tbo occasion "is a most important and solemn one.

This happens often throe times a wcok, nnd often too tho deceased bad never attended his church or contributed ono cent towards its expenses. Is ho not willing to do a kind act for an afflicted family? Of course ho is. Any right minded undertaker also would give his services gratuitously, if such wero the custom. Bnt how about tho custom? Is it a generous, or even a just ono? St. Paul was discussing this very question the remuneration of tho prcachor of the Gespel when he wroto Tho laborer is worthy of his hire.

mi F1UENDS OF SEWARD AND OF THE NEW YORK ALDEBSIEjr. TDE The number of the followers of the Alder men of New York Is ascertained. Amid their swindling and collusive overrnlinga of Mayor Hall'j vetoes of their twenty miles laying of nntrlod pavements at unprecedented prloes, thoy found time to pass a resolution giving Beward a reception at the Oity Hall. The Fort lafayetto boll ringer held his levee accordingly, and of tho ono million and a half people living within walking distance of the Hall, two hundred and fifty paid their coort to Seward. Thus oan be estimated the number of the admirers of him and of his Aldermanio entertainers.

Give the Demooratio party a fair count of votes in New York City, with no op. pointed emissaries of a Republican Police Commission to manipulate tho results, and it Is easy from the paucity of their Seward reception to Infer that such fellows as tBcBO New York Aldermen of the period would not long be kept in a position to waste public money and disgrace the Democratic party. MILITARY MATTERS. Exit Fim SisTH Regiment. Hoffman has, at the request of tbe Governments of Russia and the United States, issued a pardon to Alexander Renaud, who was convicted June 28, 1867, before Hon. John Dikeman, County Judge oi Kings, on a charge of rapo, and sentenced to tho Stato Prison at Sing Sing for the term of twenty years.

The prisoner'is twenty four years of ao, born in Russia, iB a Russian subject, speaks no English, and waB employed, at the time of tho offence charged, in a lager beer saloon in Brooklyn. Tho father of tho prisoner is, or has been for some thirty yoars, a sergeant or other subordinate officer in a company bolonging to tbe Emperor's guards. Tbo caso being brought to the knowledge of the Emporor, ho directed his Minister in this country, Mr. C'atacazy, to ask, in his behalf, tho government of tho United States to pardon the prieODCr, on condition that bo immediately leave this country and go to Russia, tho Emporor promising that ho should never after leavo his dominions. When tho request of the Emperor was presented in Washing ton, the reply was that tho ITedoral Government had no jurisdiction over such matters, and that tho application should bo mado to Governor Hoffman.

This was done but tho latter, after carof ul investigation, deolined to grant tho pardon. Whereupon, the Russian Minister laid stress upon the application of the Emperor, and BUggestod that there was not a sovoroign in Europe who would not pardon a citizen of the United StateBt' for an offence against the laws of his realm, if the request were made by its President. To Governor Hoffman replied that ho had no authority to communi oato with foroign governments in such mattoss, but that such an application must come through Washington. The ond of it all was that ProBident Grant directod tho Secretary of Stato to transmit the application of tho Egiperor of Russia to Governor Hoffman, and suggest the sentiments of good will which Russia had always manifested to this government, and, in substance, re quest that the pardon might be granted. Tho application was then forthwith complied with by Governor Hoffman, and tho prisoner is on his way to Russia.

ALLEGED FELONIOUS ASSAULT. A Sailor Forsakes bis Goose and Wiffe for tho Bottlo and Kiilfo. John Stone, a tailor, nine imd twenty years of age, was arreBtcd by Officer Carroughor, of the Forty second Precinct, shortly before eix o'clock, last evening, charged with having committed a felonious1 assault upon his wife Margaret, at their residonce, No, 109 Hudson avelme. Tho narrative is recorded upon the return to Police, Headquarters from the above written Precinct, substantially as follows It appears that John and Margaret hove been married about six year's, during which time ho has abused her in "all manner of ways," besides refusing to support her, in consequence of which she became dependent upon her mother, A short lime, since, Margarot gave her hUBband twenty dollars, with which to go to tho West and procuro work, but ho went on a drunk instead, and squandered the money, yesterday he demandea ten dollars from bis wife, wha refused it, whereupon he attempted to stab hor in her breast with a knife, which perforated her elotblpg, but Inflicted no wound. John was arraigned before Polico Justice Walsh, tins morning, and pleading "not guilty," was committed to await examination.

BOGUS NEWS. The World on Sunday published two oolumn3 of alleged correspondence from Paris, the writer of which gravely pretended that the Kmperor Mopoioon died last September, and that his family and ministers hired an impostcr who looks llko the Emperor, to personate him and preteDd to roign, while tho Empress and M. Ollivier in fact carry on tho government. So ridiculous and impossible a canard proves ono of two things that tho Journal which published it is utterly verdant and haa been imposed on; or that it despises its readers, and believes them willing to swallow any trash however preposterous. Any ono of a hundred known facts, such as the speech to the Chambers "Order I onBwor for help me, gontlemen, to preserve liberty" demonstrates the existence of Napoleon as certainly as we can know of the oxistonco of President Grant or of Govornor Hoffman.

Tho IForM ought to bo called tho Word' for it is all gab, without sense or conscience. It is just now pitting its character against that of the Domocratio local loaders, and whllo, in view of its former escapadcB, tho Demooratio massoB are doubting how far to trust its present professions, it comes out with news fraud ae self betraying as it is discreditable.
