Most Terribly Injured of All Surviving Merriok Victims. JOKES AND LATTGH3 IN PAJN. When the Doctor Told Him How Many Fractures He Had Sustained He" Remarked That His Name Should Be Changed From Welbrook to Well broke Cased inPlaster of Paris From Head to Foot. There Is one Interesting and. really remarkable side of the Merrick road disaster that has not yet been fully touched upon tn th'e oft written accounts of that terrible catastrophe.

It Is the absolute heroism displayed by all the young men and women who were in that 111 fated tally ho. If the saying be true that It takes an awful scene like this or terrible suffering to test men's souls, then the members of that merry party who rode so gayly some to death and all to pain and Injury have been weighed in quality and nothing is wanting in' their characteristics to stamp them as exceptionable men and women. In the first place everything was so sudden so unexpected that no one was prepared to face the fate that awaited yet the impulse of all the young men, ranging from 18 to 22 years of age, was wholly to protect tho young women with them. Even the one who Jumped, the youngest in the party, endeavored to carry with him his girl friend, but failed and fell to the road only to leap to his feet again and brace himself to the terrible ordeal of facing and trying relieve as best he could the agony of ihls friends around him. There is one, however.

Who has shown himself such a brave man and so self sacrlflcing In suffering, that he has completely won the hearts of those who tended him at St. John's Hospital and won' a name for himself which he will have reason to be proud of when at last he is again restored to his home a well man. That man is "Walter Welbrock, the most painfully Injured all the young people who escaped death. He still lies in the hospital, where he ih aa been for so many weeks, yet with all his agonizing fractures and the thought that he must stay In his tied for many weeks more, he is the most cheerful of all the patients. He was literally broken all up, so frightfully torn, shaken, bruised and broken, in, fact, that the doctor! acknowledged he did not know where to begin to fix him.

Every mew examSnartion revealed another fracture, and some additional wound. Yet from the time he gained consciousness. ai he lay on the road unable to move up to the present time not a murmur of complaint or gesture of impatience has come from his "It Is such stuff the Christian martyrs werfj made of," one of the St. John surgeons said the other day, "and one can. believe the stories of their stoicism more readily wiith the knowl edge of how this young hero has acted." His first action on the day of the accident, when he recovered consciousnes; was to try' to gain information of the condition of the ln Jurd.

Propped up so he could see around, with such pain as would have made any ordinary man delirious, he pointed with the one remaining member of his body that he move, his left arm, to those whom he denjed needed most attention before the medical help arrived. He had passed two years in medical study and put it to use in telling what should be done in applying bandages and stopping the flow oif blood from the most seriously injured. He did not once lose consciousness again un Ml he had done aJi that could be done, but seemed to subdue his pain and weakness hy sheer force of mind. Since he has been at the hospital he has been the joy of the ward and always has a pleasant smile or a witty saying for everyone' who approaches. He is the one interesting topic of conversation in the and his jokes are repeated hy the To them he Is.

a marvel. He was the most ser'C ously injured of their patients and was noi really expected to live over a few but has simply conquered death by force of "Walter," said the doctor in attendance, as he looked at the white face of the lad on the bed with real affection, "if you can only, keep up that wonderful vitality a little longer you'll pull through." "Now, doctor," said the irrepressible patient with a smile, as if his injuries were a sore neck or toothache, "just you attend to the fractures and such things and leave the vitality to me." He was then lying tn a solid casing of plaster of paris, that left only an arm and his head free. This arm ho feebly waved in greeting to any friend who came in the ward, how ever, and he positively refused to be overlooked by visitors. So unusual was the nerve he displayed that for a time the doctors feared paralysis had killed pain until they discovered this remarkable patient was proving Ms pluck and desiro to save others distress in another way. A habit of bis was to occasionally ask any caller who was with him to leave him alone as he felt a nap coming on.

He would close his eyes and apparently fall into a restful sleep that encouraged his attendants. It was accidentally discovered, however, that Wellbrock did not sleep In these little intervals and he finally confessed to his brother, the young lawyer, that the pain became so excessive that he had to adopt this means to fight it off without revealing it by groans or restlessness. Always thoughtful of others he feigned sleep rather than let others know he suffered. The other day when the doctors were examining his injuries he looked quizzically at the physician for a moment and then said: "Doctor, just how many fractures have I got, do you thluk?" "Oh, eleven or twelve, I suppose," said the astonished surgeon, trying to look unconcerned. "Well, I want to change my name." "Why in the world do you want to change your name?" "Well, I want to be called Well broke, bo cause Wellbrock won't do any more." The doctor stared for a moment to see if delirium had set in and then walked off in a dazed condition as the victim smiled.

"Well, I'm hanged," he said, "If that fellow doesn't beat me. A man with his body in splinters getting off a joke like that!" But the indomitable spirit of this young man surmounts everything and a thousand and one witty, cheerful, teasing phrases are bywords in the hospital now. Walter Wellbrock was a student In the Long Island College medical course and showed great proficiency in all his studies, surgery particularly appealed to him. He would have graduated in a short time. Every ailment, every fracture, every bruise sustained by him is known to him, and as he lies now bound in splinters he loves to point out to his friends with hit one arm that is free all his injuries and explain their nature and the method of treating them, giving the medical terms and entering Into technical details.

It is hardly possible to realize that the enthusiastic and handsome young follow Is actually talking of his own body as he indicates the hundred places where it is bruised and broken. It is now confidently believed that' the wonderful nerve and vitality of this youth will not only pull him through, but that he will recover without noticeable marks of his injuries. His knee cap was twice broken and this will be attended to last, sewn with silver thread and allowed to form a new bone or calcareous deposit. Of course this will redound to the credit of the hospital and its surgeons, but much is due to the patient himself, who takes a professional Interest in hla own misfortune. He is certainly the most wonderful patient for nerve and cheerfulness In suffering the institution ever treated.

Miss Clara Stewart is another prodigy of patience and in spite of the difficult and painful operations performed upon her she Is as lively and merry as can be. Mrs. Andrus, Barnes and all the other injured ones have shown a courage that has been the marvel of tho hospital attendants and a joy to their friends. They aro still progressing favorably. Wellbrock, when seen by an Eaglo reporter the other day talked of the accident and.

remembered all that happened after herecovered consciousness and told of tho wounded from the standpoint of a physician. His brother says that he always imagined Walter to be stubborn, but ho knows now it was simply irrepressible will power. BOSTON YEARNS FOR SWAMIS. A loud and long welcome to Swaml Sara dananda.
