mmr nr THE BEOOKLYN DAILY EALE. KEW YORK, MOSTDAlf, APRIL 4, 1898. 13 LEGAL NOTICES. PROPOSALS. SPECIAL NOTICES.

SURROGATE'S NOTICES. CORPORATION NOTICES. BILLY BARRY, THE COMEDIAN playing the "Rising Generation." He had completed five weeks and in the sixth week, while tho company was In Buffalo, Mr. Barry was taken sick. Ho tried hard to complete the week, but was compelled to give up several weeks ago and veturned to this city.

He was taken to the Clarendon Hotel and Dr. Pitzslmmons, Mr. Behman's physician, was sent for. The latter diagnosed the case as a serious complaint, and recommended his removal to tho Long Island College' Hospital, on Henry street. Here Dr.

West and Dr. Shepherd were called In consultation. The fatal disease was at once suspected, but It was hoped that further development, after a little rest and good nourishment, would prove this supposition untrue. The patient's stomach refused to retain any nourishment, and this utterly disheartened his friends at the outset, but later beet juice was administered with good effect. A week ago last Thursday, as the comedian's condition did not improve at the hospital, he was removed to his home, on Second street.

Barry's wife died about a year and a half aeo. He leaves seven children, namely, Emma, Clara, Robert, Frank, Charles, Lydia and "William J. The latter Is playing with Nellie MeHenry. The youngest child, Emma, is 4 years old. Although Mr.

Barry made a fortune during his life, it is said that he is a comparatively poor man. At times the comedian brightened up and when In such a condition spun out many of his witty sayings, which won for him a reputation on the stage. Mr. Barry is one of the most Jovial of fellows. His wit is ever ready and he made friends fast.

Colonel Sinn in speaking of Mr. Barry recently, said that he didn't think he had an enemy. Mr. Barry had in study a new play which it was the intention of Messrs. Hyde Behman to place on the road next season.

STA15TED LIFE AS A NEWSBOY. Ran Off to the War, but His Ability as an Entertainer Was Recoarnized and He Was Aided in His Theatrical Career by Colonel Sinn Barry's Connection With Hyde Behman and His" Partnership With Fay. Billy Barry, the; Irish comedian, who was removed to his home at 501 Second street, from the Long Island College Hospital last week, is still in a critical condition, and it is thought that he cannot recover. William J.

Barry was born in Ireland about forty eight years ago. He was brought to this country by his parents when very young. BiUy Barry's parents took up residence on Cherry street, New York, where the comedian epent'the early years of his life. The family was extremely poor and young Barry was compelled to assist in supporting his mother at a veTy early age. He sold newspapers on the' streets of New York up to the breaking BILLY BARRY IN 1S6S.

out of the war, when one afternoon when a detachment of soldiers was leaving the city for the front, Barry, without notifying his mother, skipped off with them, and in a short while found himself in Baltimore. Md. It is said by some of his friends that it was in the latter city that he first appeared on the vaudeville stage. Finding himself penniless and having a good voice and being able io dance fairly well, his mind was naturally directed in that direction. He was from that time on known as Master Billy Barry.

Several years later young Barry made his ap UnnrflnAa In lira nrtnn TV a1 Tirilt iam Sinn was at that time running Canterbury Hall, a well known vaudeville resort in that city. Ml Sinn saw Barry do a turn, lilted his style and engaged him. Barry remained with most of the time during the war, and then went West, appearing in Detroit in 1868, where he first met Nick Nor7 ton, a veteran actor, at present employed by Hyde Behman. this citv. It was in TBtrnii that he had the photograph taken, the cut of which appears for the first time to day.

Barry next went to Havana. He did not remain, there long, but returned to this country and from. 1869 to 1872 appeailad at the Front Street Theater, Baltimore, also under the management of Colonel Sinn, and the Mortimer Variety in Philadelphia. It was at tho latter place that he met his wife, then known as Fanny Devere. It was in 1872 that Barry came North again and joined Tony Pastor's stock company, at the Bowery, Theater; In 1874 he made several tours around, the country Pastor's management.

He continued as one Pastor's comedians, with Frank Girard and partnership with Harry Billy Barry first became known in this borough In 1878, when he appeared 'in the combination with Harry Kernell at the Adams street playhouse, then known as Voiles' Theater. Mart Hanley, who later became identified with Harrlgan and Hart, was the manager of the company. The theater, then as now, was run by Hyde Behman. During a short stay of two weeks a very close friendship sprung up between Barry and the local managers. This friendship was strengthened, of course, by the hit Barry made with his Brooklyn audiences.

It didn't take the Brooklyn manager long to see that Barry was a drawing card, and before leaving the city he was told if he cared to return to this Ity after bis contract with the Kernell com BILLY BARRY TO DAY. bination expired he would find a place in the local stock company. signed by Billy Barry, which read as follows: "Stranded; kindly send me $100." Mr. Beh man thought this rather strange, but know ing Barry's worth, instead of sending the money as requested, he took an early train for the Connecticut town. In speaking of this experience recently Mr. Behman said: "Well, you never saw such a happy lot of people the members of that company when I ar rived. You would have thought that I was an angel from heaven.

They all declared they had had their meals regularly, but the way they accepted an invitation to eat belled them." "Mr. Behman gave Barry the amount of mon ey ne a3kea lor and also assisted Kernell in like manner. Barry was then induced to re turn to this city and was engaged by the Brooklyn manager to join the Arm's Btock company. The comedian's reappearance, at the Adams street theater was met with delight by the patrons of the latter house. His performances were well received and he gained in popularity.

He continued there until 1881, when he had a falling out with Mr. Behman over some trivial affair and severed his con nection with the company, much to the regret of everybody. Of course, Barry had made many menus, and on the strength of his popularity bo formed a partnership with Hugh Fay. who was another Brooklyn favorite, and went starring 'in "Muldoon's Picnic." They met with fair success. In the fall of 1882, however, ex Fire Marshal Benjamin Lewis was Induced to purchase the church building on Elm place and remodel it into a theater in the interest of Barry and Fay.

It was called then and is still known as the Grand Opera House. The two comedians met with a good reception, but the projectors of the scheme were unable to continue It and the house finally passed into the hands of Barry's old managers. Tne company again wenc on the road and remained there for several years, but in 1885 Barry dissolved partnership with Fay and playetl with the Hyde Behman stock company for a season. He then again Joined hands with his old partner, Fay. until the latter's death in 1894.

Barry continued on the road on 1,1 a hnl. a ill nnnpisrpfl ixt vnrlnii H9ioq in "McKenua's Flirtations," "Rising Generation" and "Bradley's Money." It was, however, in tho "Rising Generation' 'that he met with most success. It is said that he cleared between $60,000 and $70,000 a season with it alone. Mr. Barry joined the Park Theater Stock Company, which opened a season at the latter house In September last, and disbanded about, months ago.

The comedian was then laced on the road by Hyde Bcaniaii, LEGAL NOTTCEB. SUPREME COURT, KOTOS COUXTY HA3J nah K. Van Vranken, plaintiff, against Isaac Halstead and others, defendants.
