4 and when we asked for Squire Roberts' house they at once told us to tako the first lane to the right baok of the tavern. This village or hamlet is Montgomery Square', and is to be considered the birthplace of the Hancock family proper. It is at the orossing of the road from Philadelphia to the Lehigh with that from Norristown to Doylestown the latter the Court House of Bucks County, which is not more than eight or ton miles distant, while Norrlatown is about twelve miles to the southwest. Doylcstown Is the' seat of Bucks County, which is one of the three original counties of Pennsylvania, established by William Penn personally. Montgomery was only separated from Philadelphia County at the close of the Revolutionary War.

It wbb a crude, rather rough county, inferior to Bucks and the rivor counties in the value of Us land when Hancook's father came here to live. Montgomery Square, however, hss overy appearance of being eighty to one hundred years old. The two taverns go back to early in the century. The Philadelphia road is wida and pared and the other road is more red shale pulverized. There are in all about twelve houses at Montgomery Square, most of them a dull, disagreeable mud red color common to the stone hereabout they are wide, chunky houses, without much grace.

The new Methodist Church was put up in 1848, and hoa a neat graveyard with marblo stones about it, and nearly opposite this church is a red school house built in the Centennial year on the sit of another one where Hancook's father taught. This school house is rough east, of a blue color, but in the rear is an older house, thin and tall, two stories and a low atllo high, which has a mueh older look, and which I suspected to have been the place where the young family was brought up. As Hancook was born fifty seven years ago and as nothing much was expected of him or his surroundings, certainly no such figure in the world as he has played since, the memories of the people hereabout not particularly bright at their best, were quite weak on whether the General was born in the school house or barn at his master's house close by. I will come back to the school house, however, in a few minutes. TO 'SCJUrBB ROBERTS'.

Montgomery Square at present snggests a place killed by the railroad. It la true that a good many of the farmers still make the journey to Philadelphia once a week carrying down hay and folder or potatoes and bringing baok manure or lime or farm machinery. There may have been a time when the wagons went by at shorter intervals and when (addle horses were hitch ad around these old taverns, and at night was heard the violin yonder and at the old bail soma magician played his tricks before the wondering rustics, among whom, at rare intervals, when he could get a shilling, was Bsnjainln Franklin Hancook. General Hanoook, about six years ago, rode with a friend through all these parts, and, ae we may expect, his heart dropped a little at the staidness, stillness, unplc torisl look of everything. Even when he drove into prettier oountry, as that beyond the Schuylkill, where AllBntown.

It has been wittily said by the negro minstrels that 'There iB only one thing that over surprises a man, and that is twins," The young couple, poor in this world's goods, had certainly mads a good beginning for posterity. The present candidate of millions of his countrymen was discovered to the world In the arms of his brother, after the fashion of Romulus and Remus, and the wolf was at the door.

In 1824 Winfleld Scott, whom Mr. Hancock admired so much that he then and there put the name on one of the fresh twins, was the most dlstinguiBhed soldier in the country next to General Jack.on. He was in command of the Department of the West, which embraced the Black Hawk war and pretty muoh all the Indian fighting of that day. Jackson and Scott had just been united in nominal friendship, after a long quarrel, in which Jaokson swore that he would cut off Scott's ears tho first time they should meet. Major General Jacob Brown was, at the time of Hancock's birth, the Genera! In Chief of the army, but soon afterward he died, and Jackson resigning his commission, It was supposed that Scott was to be the ranking officer of the army.

Here I may say that General Brown, who will bear comparison with Hancock in several respects, was born only a few miles from Hancock's blrthplass, in Bucks County, in 1775. He was a school teacher in his native neighborhood, and Biter ward a surveyor. General Grant's mother, too, was born in th same oounty, aud near the same place as Hancock. extant in the Pennsylvania Archives. The following explains what I had to say about Hancock's association with slavery In that Commonwealth Jandabv 29, 1781. Bih I am at a loss to know how the act for the gradual abolition of Blavery is to be oonstrued with rospeet to slaves or servants under the age of twenty eight years and omitted to be entered. Whether they are to be considered as immediately free, or as servants until they attain the age of twenty eight years. I shall esteem it a favor if you will be pleased to inform me what construction the honorable counsel and yourself put on the law In this point, that I may know how to make out certificates proporly In such caBes.

The bearer has two children thus circumstanced under the eg of twenty eight yearB aud not entered. He is desirous to have certificates, wherein I think the benefit derived to the personB by the law should be clearly and preoieely expressed. Therefore, I should wish to guard against improprieties. I am respectfully, sir, your most obedient, humble servant. Basbb, 3b, To Hon.
