secretary of the Newark club, is a strong player, and every man on the team has had experience in intor city meetings. Tho Brooklyn representatives will be nearly the same as announced last week. William A. Harland, George W. Snedeker and GOorge Thompson are alternates.

The Newarks expect a return match in two weeks. M. F. Clousor, champion of Jersey City, states that his team will be ready to come to Brooklyn when desired, and tho date will ba announced soon. The return match with New York Is tho most important of all the fall contests.

Tho Gotham experts will make heroic efforts to defeat the Brooklyn team this time and the outlook Is bright for them. Dr. Schaefer will be at their head and ho expects to enlist the services of 'W. W. Avery, Harry Pillsbury, James Brown and other redoubtablcs who have taken no part In previous matches.

It is safe to assert that tho local players will have no walkover as they had last July. The "big four" of the Association club, Melvin Brown, A. J. De Freest, E. W.

Spiller and J. T. Washington, are at headquarters every Saturday night and exciting games occur at every meeting. R. P.

Ostrander writes to the Eagle that he challenges E. W. Spiller to play a match for $25 a side. If Mr. Spiller thinks this sum too small he will Increase it.

Mr. Ostrander states that this match is not for the championship of Brooklyn, as Messrs. Brown, Dc Freest and Washfngton have something to say about that, but to decide individual superiority. CHECKEB POSITION NO. 125.

Ho has not yet mode any announcement of hl3 selections.

A contemporary says: "Whist is still tho absorbing game at the Carloton, and scarcely an evening passes without a match of somo interest occurring there. Doubtless hypnotic suggestion in this direction is afforded by constant gazing upon tho championship trophy ot tho Intor club Whist league, which conspicuously adorns a wull of tho card room. Judging from what I hear, the winning of trophies is not regarded as a very great achievement by the Carleton club as a body, for I understand that the team which brought the trophy to tho club has never received any recognition from the latter, though a few members. In their individual capacity, have tendered their compliments and congratulations, from which latter only tho members of tho team gather that the club is aware that it holds tho In consequence there Is no great enthusiasm on the part of last year's team to enter the lists again, and they are, I believe, rather inclined to let others fight the Carleton battles. The Crescent Athletic club will put forward as thoir fighting four Dr.

H. X. Read (captain), J. J. Hlnchman, F.

H. Lawrence and Dr. Stuart Church. This Is an entirely new team and one that will bear watching. They are all strong players and, as far as can be judged, well balanced.

This, after all, is the chief element of strength. W7hist Is a partnership of two against two, and if the two partners do not work together in perfect unison, superior skill will not avail in tho long run. The Oxford club vriU be represented by Frederick H. Webster (captain), Joseph Kling, Sanford H. Stool and Warren (J.

Barber. The first three will be recognized as members of last year's team, while the fourth Is a new aspirant for whist honors. Their individual skill cannot be questioned and they can be trusted to give a good account of themselves before tho tourney is ended. An Oxford team without Captain Webster would indeed be a novelty and it will be a matter of sincere gratification to the members of tho other teams, all of whom are warm friends of the vice president of the league, to seo him again leading his club. No definite announcements have yet been made by the other clubs, though there has been moro or less gossip concornlng all.

Frederic H. Evans would be one of the Hanover team this year. Thero is no foundation for this, as owing to a recent family bereavement he will take no part In tho gamo this season. The example set by the Knickerbocker Field club In joining the league has been followed hy the Ridge club of Bay Ridge, which was organized only last year, but manifests a tnost commendable spirit in associating itself with its brother clubs. It has a most corafortablo and commodious house on Sev onty second street, and its membership of over ono hundred includes tho best elements among the residents of that most desirable beautiful locality.

Though recently organized, It has remarkably successful, and tho pluck and enterprise of its members can bo relied on to put it still further in tho van. A whist tournament la now in progress in which twenty four of its players are engaged, tho scores having hoen published from time to time heretofore in the Eagle. Its accession to the ranks of the Inter Club Whist league cannot help proving beneficial to it. as it has been to all the other clubs and tho usual result of Increased interest In tho gamo and Improvement in play on the part of its individual members can be expect d. It is a matter of surprise that the remaining clubs in Brooklyn do not avail themselves of the opportunity of Joining the league before tho tournament begins in November.

The constitution of the league provides that any reputable club can be admitted to membership by. vote of the executive committee, and prompt action Is necesary In order to participate in this season's tourney. Miss Kato Irwin Wrheelock, tho whist queen, will arlvo in Brooklyn on tho 15th. to roEumo the instruction of her many classes here, and will be domiciled at the St. Gourge hotel.
