VETERAN George J. Dunne Lay Neidig Suicide To Recent Illness The suicide of Inspector Charles L. Neidig was prompted by his mental condition following the death of his mother and his own serious illness rather than by his transfer from Manhattan's East Side to a Queens post, Police Commissioner Lewis J. Valentine asserted yesterday. Answering written questions of newspapermen submitted to him, the Commissioner praised the late inspector as an "able, efficient, honest and courageous police officer and official." He declared that the shift in posts was made not to the inspector but because of his physical condition.

Neidig's brother and mother had died a of streptococcus infections within two years, Valentine said, and the inspector himself had suffered from a similar infection. The Commissioner denied that an official probe of Neidig's finances or official actions would be launched. Funeral services will be held tonight at 8 o'clock from Inspector Neidig's home. 70-23 Harrow Forest Hills. Burial will be tomorrow at 2:30 p.m.
