Patrick's Mayor, Smith Present Thousands of persons from all walks of life, Including outstanding figures in public affairs and the world of sports, filled Bt. Patrick's Cathedral today as a solemn high requiem mass was celebrated for Col. Jacob Ruppert, multi-millionaire brewer and owner of the world champion New York Yankees. Colonel Ruppert died Friday r.t his home, 1120 6th Ave, Manhattan, at the age of 71 after a long illness. Traffic Is Diverted The funeral was one of the largest ever held In St.

Patrick's. The cathedral was filled to its capacity of 4,200 persons and 10,000 more were massed In the surrounding streets. Traffic was diverted from 5th Ave. and from 50th and 51st Sts, between 5th and Madison Aves. When the casket was taken to the cathedral, 125 police under the personal command of Chief Inspector Among a host of notables who attended a solemn requiem mass today in St.

Wears Robe of Bishop Mons. Michael J. Lavelle, rector of the cathedral, who pronounced the final absolution, wore, by special dispensation, the robes and mitre of a bishop.

Burckhardt, oldest employe of the Ruppert brewery, headed a delegation of 500 workers in the brewery and other Ruppert enterprises. Ten rows of pews were reserved for members of the Baseball Writers Association. The cathedral choir of 18 male voices, under the direction' of Edward Rlvettl, sang a musical program. The Ruppert brewery and all its branches were closed today, and flags flew at half-staff on all breweries throughout the country In memory of the colonel. Burial was private In the family mausoleum in Kensico Cemetery.

PaulV.O'Halloran, English Professor Paul Vincent O'Halloran, formerly an Instructor of English at St. John's University, died suddenly last night at his home, 23 Stuyvesant Ave, of a heart attack. He was 31 Mr. O'Halloran had been professor of English at Seton Hall College In South Orange, N. since 1937.

He previously had been at St. John's University for about a year. He was educated at St. John's Academy, St. John's Prep and St, John's University, where he received his A.

B. degree in 1931. He received an M. A. degree from New York University In 1933 and was to have received a Ph.D.

Mrs. Bridget Enright Mrs. Bridget Srannell Enright, 81, a resident of Brooklyn for 65 years, died yesterday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Florence E. Norris.

Walter J. Vreeland, Sugar Executive Attorney and Protege Of James II. Post Held Offices in Other Firms Walter J. Vreeland. 57, of 27 Pros pect Park West, secretary of the National Sugar Refining Company of New Jersey and an officer and director of a number of other corporations, died today In Polyclinic Hospital, Manhattan.

Mr. Vreeland was a protege of the late James H. Post, former president of the sugar company and noted Brooklyn philanthropist. He was Mr. Post's personal attorney and had been an intimate friend of the financier for 40 years.

Mr. Vreeland started his career as an office boy in the old Brooklyn sugar firm of B. H. Howell, Son where he met Mr. Post, who started his career with the same firm.

Mr. Post advised him to become a lawyer and he was admitted to the bar about 1907. He went with the National Sugar Refining Com pany as the firm's counsel. Mr. Vreeland was a witness to the will of Mr.

Post. Held Other Executive Posts Mr. Vreeland also was secretary of the Chapara Light Power Company, the Chaparra Railroad Company, the Colonial Sugars Company, the Cuban-American Sngar Com pany and the New Niquero Sugar Company and was president of the eD Mau Realty Company, the Land smith Realty Company, the South Eleventh Street Warehouse Cor- poration and the Vreeland Ord Realty Company He was a native of Brooklyn and is survived by his widow, Fannie Sutherland Vreeland; two children.
